I think this race is the ultimate proof of Alain Prost's race intelligence. He was the first to realize the the tyres wouldn't make it through the whole distance. Mansell and Rosberg had to learn it the hard way. Williams told Piquet to come in after they had seen that none of the top runners make it without a pit stop. Alain Prost saw this way earlier - this won him the race and the title. He simply was smarter(!).
1: You could see that, Rosberg and Mansell had problems with the tyres.
2: Piquet had the chance to win the championship if he wins the race, so I don't think he gave the win to Prost. His only chance was to change tyres and push to overtake Prost, who already had a tyre change.

So if Piquet didn't make that "precautionary" pitstop near the end Prost would've finished 2nd and lose the championship?! Bad Piquet... :)
