I know you're all into the acoustic bass guitar thing which is cool but I really think it's time you just took the dive and bought an upright. These acoustic bass guitars even at their best don't come close to the effectiveness of an upright for playing jazz.
Acoustic bass guitars and upright basses (to me) are very different instruments, with different pros/cons and applications. I do intend to get an upright eventually though, it's just not at the top of my list. A good upright is not cheap!
You're going to wear down the fingerboard using any strings. Roundwounds will do it a bit faster but either way it's going to be a long time before it'll affect the tone or playability. This one has an ebony fretboard too, which is one of the tougher woods out there.
True. I'm a former ABG turned URB player and I just wanted to comment that in retrospect I wish I would have taken some of that money I used to buy my AGB's and just saved up for an upright. The upright has made me much happier and makes me feel much more "legit" as a bassist. Pretty much all I was trying to do with my AGB's anyways is just simulate an upright which looking back doesn't make a lot of sense.
The other thing too is that economy we're in now is a buyers market. If you look earnestly you can find deals on used instruments that you may not have been able to afford years ago, uprights included. Give it some thought.
Thanks. I don't usually play rock on an acoustic fretless though. A Birdsong would probably be better suited for that, and a more versatile bass in general (being an electric). But for me, the Kinal would be more 'fun' to play in some ways, since it's an acoustic. They both make superb basses though :)
haha dude i cant really hear the chords you are trying to outline with your walking especially the 4th chord but i guess thats not the main highlight of your video. great job soloing anyway (:
My right hand is usually angled a bit like that. I tend to play more with the left edge of my fingertips, and I think that's why I do it.
I've got an Mbox2 that I use for recording direct. But this video was done purely acoustic. I had my Macbook sitting next to me playing the song from its internal speakers and recording the video and audio from the built in webcam.
I play with a pick on occasion. Jason Newsted (Metallica) was THE biggest inspiration for me when I started playing bass. And sometimes playing with a pick just suits the music better. It's good to be able to play either way. (Chris Squire plays bass with a pick, and he has some of the coolest basslines ever!)
WOW! I've never heard of a jazz player being influenced by a metal player! Great open mind man! You should try to listen to reggae bassists! Your playing will soar!
I do listen to Reggae bassists! Aston Barret (Bob Marley and the Wailers) is definitely an influence. And Eric Wilson from Sublime. I listen to a little bit of everything, and a lot of some stuff! Older metal (Metallica, Black Sabbath, Queensryche, Iron Maiden...) was the stuff I started playing bass to, and then I later started listening to more jazz, blues, reggae, funk, classical...etc.
you know, you should do a cover of moments notice by coltrane, im playing that for a jazz concert with my HS jazz band.

Have You ever heard of the Ergo?
Also what Brand of Electronics dose Mike put in that? Ad, do you use roundwounds or flats?
Verticans 2 years ago
Yeah, I've seen the Ergo stuff. Not really interested in electric uprights much though. I did have a BSX Allegro for a little while.
This one has B-Band electronics. And my 6-string Kinal has Highlander electronics. Roundwound strings on both (Thomastik-Infeld Acousticores).

So you're using roundwounds on a fretless acoustic bass? If so, is any damage being inflicted to the fingerboard? The sound is really fine.

Luv yur playing...I'm considering the Kinal Kompact or a Birdsong bass..could you by any chance play some rock on that Kinal to help me decide?...

Did you start out playing upright?
MistaMarko 3 years ago
Nope. I started on electric bass. I've messed around on uprights before, but nothing real serious.
GBagley 3 years ago
Your right hand technique just looks angled like you would've been habitually used to an upright, pretty interesting though, lol.
When you plug in directly, is it 1/4" to soundcard, or do you use anything like a M-Box..adapter, or something of the sort?

Yeah, I was watching your other videos and figured you use the direct connect for them..do you play with a jazz band or anything?
MistaMarko 3 years ago
Not currently. I've been doing various theatrical stuff. Playing for musicals. Very cool!

real bass players use their fingers! =D

real bass players don't go around claiming their style is better. I happen to like a crunchier, full body tone, and it sounds good on my amp.
thanks for the suggestion though.
