You've got great control, i struggle to not bury the beater into the head cos when i do release the beater it tends to bounce and i get unwanted beats. Need a lot more practice i suppose. I love that bass drum sound by the way.
so when i play with my hell pretty much on the ground like usual, i cant play very fast or loud. but if i try with my heel up i seem to loose all my control. Does that come with practice? also when i have my pedal looser obviously it doesn't play as fast but when i tighten it i cant seem to play fast. im like screwed either way haha. am i just screwed without the "golden foot"?
Anyone can aquire a "golden foot" simply by practicing and watching your form. I suggest keeping a tighter spring tension, just see if you can exercise your calf muscle. Keep the ball of your foot around the middle of the footboard to maximize the fulcrum of the pedal, similar to the fulcrum point when using sticks.
the way that in the video,everytime you speek your face shows up ,it's godlike,seriously,reminds me of god. you know,like,somethin is happenin and god is seen in the rear saying some riddles or somethin,tough. its a tough vision to understand. Anywoo,nice playin,groovie!
maybe a little strange question i can play what you do in this video from dazed and confused but only with my socks on with my shoes i can't do it do you have tips ?
Nice vid, two things though. First, can you not sound like you're about to fall asleep when you're talking? Second, that technically wasn't heel toe, since your heel didn't actually hit. That looked more like the slide technique. Still, as said before, excellent video!
nice lesson, but you use the squeeze tecnique for doubles, like me... the heel-toe is radically different, I can't use it properly just because I have too long feet, so I can't beat with the heel...
Can you play regular sixteen notes with the squeeze tecnique? I'm destroyin my leg to get them, but they still seem like shuffle...
Thank you so much man. I used to always play just burying the beater but took the time to learn how to release the beater. Finally able to play the Immigrant Song.

Is keeping your heel lower how you also avoid fatiguing your calf muscles?
Waaay back when I was in high school (when Def Lepard were still on the radio) I tought myself some of these techniques just by listening and copying. We didn't have a double-kick on the school set of course, so I loosened the tension on the peddle and basically tap-danced on it (though nowhere near as fast as this). But I found my leg would tire after about 15 mins. You look like you could go all day
This technique should be called the "double tap". Very similar motion as tap dancing. Use the fulcrum of the pedal (about half way down foot board) and tap from the ball of your foot. Heel toe is a different motion than seen here.
Are you trying to tell me this is not a great explanation and great playing I don't even know the man why would I feel his praise would mean anything to me you ignorant speck of fly shit
Are you talking to me... ? I'm having a hard time following your spastic run-on sentence. If you were, then you clearly had no idea my comment was in response to jaqua524.
I wish more people would watch this and realise this is the exact technique Bonham used and not heel toe like so many people seem to think great explanation and great playing
@Grooverummin yeah it's not so bad. Which sounds more like Bonham to you, though? I think the first does. Too bad I wouldn't have got that with a default reso head from a Gretsch Nighthawk haha
@GrooveDrummin Yeah, true. I guess I wouldn't have gotten anything close with a 2-ply beater and single-ply reso anyway. Gotta get something other than a default Gretsch Nighthawk head.
Soon as you put a port you won't need to do this foot technique. The only reason I do this on a non-ported reso is because of the air that gets trapped inside which in turn cause a "flutter" sound. A ported head allows all this air to escape and then you can bury the beater.... A little easier to play also. The big reason I like a non-ported reso is for the sound.
@GrooveDrummin Ah man, now I feel really bad. I just put a hole and kickport in my first and only drum set's reso head... And I used to use that technique all the time. Does it really change the sound that much?
yeah, it does, but that doesn't mean you won't like it. See my video "New Ludwig Classic Maple Toms" and you can compare the sound. You just may prefer it.
i have size 12 feet and even if your's are bigger this should be no problem...just maintain the tip of your toe to be 20-25% from the top of the pedal.
I have been practicing releasing the bass pedal, and not burying it at all, but find that it gives a little of a ghost note effect. Do I have my tension too tight? or just need to find the sweet spot?
Just a little longer practicing this and you'll have the control not to let the ghost note happen but dig this, when you have mastered that control those ghost notes will be a very good thing! Keep me posted bro.
i learned this yesterday, how long has it taken you guys to learn this? i bought a kit from my friend, hes been playing for 10 years, and it took him about a month or so to learn the heel toe double stroke, ive been playing for a month, and it took me about an hour to learn the technique, in terms of mastering it, i can play good times bad times, is that good? like am I making good progess for a beginner?
you're like those girls that say they're fat when they're clearly not, just so dudes will tell them they're not. quit trying to fish for praise and get back to the drum set.
@Smoothaltheleet or, I am trying to find out where I stand among other beginner drummers, and want to know if its something that I should try to pursuit more than just a hobby...don't judge someone without knowing them, because maybe, they may just mean everything that they say, in my case, I did. Thank you.
@Smoothaltheleet no i dont mean to become famous, dont be sarcastic lol, i just mean like if I should go for a music major in college, and try to make some sort of career out of drumming is all :)
You can learn to drive a car between the lines pretty easily but how smooth and controlled you do so will depend on experience...same with drumming. Mastering something doesn't just happen nor is it a race. Perception is another element, unless I actually hear you play I cannot base a judgement on mere words as I may hear things differently than you. If your heart is really on drumming, definitely go for it and get the proper education to enable you to gain "experience".
Awesome! Thanks for the info.. I bought a coated emperor batter head just a few days ago....Wish I would have purchased the single ply now but I'll do some experimenting with it and see if I somewhat capture the " Morello" sound.
My kit is silver sparkle btw...just like Joes'......
That was a very inspiring video!...Thanks for posting that!! WoW!!
I have a 1965 Ludwig kit with a 22 inch bass drum, 3 ply, white interior shells and I was wondering if you could give me any advice on how to tune it to get that range of sound. Obviously I'm not going to get it exact as your kit is different than mine, but any advice you have to offer to get even close to that would be awesome. I also love Joe Morello's sound he had in the 1960's, think he used a 22. in Ludwig.
Thanks for watching. That's a nice kit you have there. You can easily achieve the sound you want, try this...
coated single ply batter with a falam pad tensioned medium-loose, unported reso single ply tuned a little tighter than batter. For muffling use a felt strip on either side and nothing inside. This should give you the Morello sound.
I put this video on and I'm not even watching it...just love the sound of your bass drum!!! :D Keep these videos coming, they are a tremendous help :-)
Thanks again!! is it just a matter of time before the triplets will develop? i feel like im practicing but every time i sit down it feels like ive never practiced them?
would you use the same technique on a ported bass drum? sometimes when i practice the pull the beater off technique my balance seems weird. is this normal at first?
This big boomy bass drum sound is of course awesome BUT things have to be considered. If you are playing in a large room with the kit mic'ed up your soundman HAS to know how to deal with a drummer that prefers this sound. You can mute a kick drum almost dead in a large room and it still sounds big so what can happen with the wrong sound man (or trying fast double bass stuff) is an indefinable rumble. It is very hard to have control and definition with this kind of sound.
So long as both sides of the bass drum are miced then, there will be no problem with washed out notes. Yes, a smaller bass drum will move air quicker and will play faster but you have to add processing to make it sound big. A 26" doesn't need anything but "handle bars" for the sound man :) With proper tuning, (tighter than normal), a larger bass drum will sound better, play better and will always get the comments. But you are right, with the wrong sound man there will be problems.
haha, that's awesome mate! what a first lesson. When you say it's not the easiest way to play bass drum what do you think is the easiest? Thanks for sharing your love of this amazing instrument.
@GrooveDrummin pleasure is all mine, that's a cool piece f drumming, I spent most of my teens trying to figure out what my hero was doing with those damn drums!!
and yes I see what you mean, it is easier leaving the beater on the head, what's a ported bass drum? is that with a cut out in the resonant head?
a lot of my students talk like you can't properly play a kit without a double pedal...it takes a video like this to make them understand that many of the best players around never need a double pedal
Thanx for this lesson, when you bury the beater i hear a (P)RR. after the P (first contact). It's in the vibration of the batterhead bouncing back and forth on the beater wright?? It sounds cool on a acoustic bassdrum because of the natural fade-out (except when there too much R's in it), When i hear it on my roland electric its to profound, not cool at all.
Great story,I figured. Mr Foot never came close to yours I always wished I could have snaped out doubles like you do back then( 81' thru 91') Jo Jo ain't got nothin on you!
Not until i built a set of drums out of cardboard then my parents saw how desperate I was to have a real kit so we "borrowed" a kit for me when I was 7. Didn't get my own drums until I was 10. I used to use bird perches for sticks and frozen dinner trays for cymbals, my snare was a plastic halloween pumpkin flipped upside down :)
@GrooveDrummin I had a set of cheap bongos my sister gave me and used wooden chop sticks for my first drum set. I was desperate as well...My parents still didn't see my love for the drums so it wasn't until I was an adult that I bought my own set. I did find that the desks at school, the ones with a flip up lid, had a very cool sound and I did a lot of hand drumming on those. Anything that I could hit to make the drum sound satisfied my need!
@GrooveDrummin I think these old stories are great and thank you for starting it by sharing yours. My next goal is to get my right foot under control like yours. Those broken triplets with one bass pedal is the Holy Grail for drummers!
Dude you're sick. Guitar player of 28 years and that's the first time I've ever "seen" that done. Very few players can do it right. Great instruction too.
The Pearl pedals are very fine pieces of gear. I find them to be effortless to play and smooth as silk. Quick action too, I highly recommend them. The Speed King in comparison lacks the smoothness but makes up for it in action.
Damn man, no matter how hard i try, my pedal just will not let my foot play fool in the rain, i think it might be something to do with my tension as on my old pedal i could probably have played it, and that old pedal was horrible quality :S
lol, I can't dance and you'd probably laugh if you saw me but the idea is to stay light on the feet using the ball of your foot, similar to tap dancing :)
its not a lesson for me.. I think your just showing performance... but its soo fucking awesome! I really wish I can do that, my footwork sounds like no one would ever like it. fuck my feet.
@GrooveDrummin I don't know why I said that and I should not have said that. I apologize. You are great. Again, I should not have said that, it was an ignorant thing to say. peace
I notice you dont really use your toes but the flat part of your foot nears the toes Correct/ How did you get the pedal set to make it look so balanced...nice job
The big toe is definitely used but as you noticed, the ball of the foot is the primary area. Think of it as bouncing a ball on the pedal. The bounce (back) is just as important. Thanks.
@GrooveDrummin In the beginning of the video it looks like the front of your foot(Toes) are not even touching the pedal, sorry for the questions for your technique is the best I have seen in a long time, its perfection.

Thanks again!! is it just a matter of time before the triplets will develop? i feel like im practicing but every time i sit down it feels like ive never practiced them?
pianodru1 8 months ago
would you use the same technique on a ported bass drum? sometimes when i practice the pull the beater off technique my balance seems weird. is this normal at first?
pianodru1 8 months ago
@pianodru1
no, not on a ported.
It will feel weird at first but after a few months you won't even have to think about it.

GrooveDrummin 8 months ago
can you answer what foot technique you use, i do the same thing and i dont know the name, its it like heel toe, or a swivle variation?
shakakamooroar 9 months ago
@shakakamooroar
might have to invent a name...toe tap...double tap...something tap anyway :)
This technique is similar to the motion your foot makes when tap dancing. BTW, I couldn't dance to save my life so it's not about the dancing...
GrooveDrummin 8 months ago
This is not too different from a Nike commercial XD BTW, you're awesome

You should do a video of how to play the Achilles Last Stand.
jimmyblues15 9 months ago
This big boomy bass drum sound is of course awesome BUT things have to be considered. If you are playing in a large room with the kit mic'ed up your soundman HAS to know how to deal with a drummer that prefers this sound. You can mute a kick drum almost dead in a large room and it still sounds big so what can happen with the wrong sound man (or trying fast double bass stuff) is an indefinable rumble. It is very hard to have control and definition with this kind of sound.
turdhat 9 months ago
@turdhat

Thanks for sharing your love of this amazing instrument.
nigelregan 9 months ago
@nigelregan
The easiest imo is when you can bury the beater using a ported bass drum. Thanks for watching and commenting bro.
GrooveDrummin 9 months ago
@GrooveDrummin pleasure is all mine, that's a cool piece f drumming, I spent most of my teens trying to figure out what my hero was doing with those damn drums!!
and yes I see what you mean, it is easier leaving the beater on the head, what's a ported bass drum? is that with a cut out in the resonant head?
thanks again
nigelregan 9 months ago
@nigelregan
yes, a hole in the reso
GrooveDrummin 9 months ago
a lot of my students talk like you can't properly play a kit without a double pedal...it takes a video like this to make them understand that many of the best players around never need a double pedal

Thanx for this lesson, when you bury the beater i hear a (P)RR. after the P (first contact). It's in the vibration of the batterhead bouncing back and forth on the beater wright?? It sounds cool on a acoustic bassdrum because of the natural fade-out (except when there too much R's in it), When i hear it on my roland electric its to profound, not cool at all.
silverstar1973 10 months ago
Great story,I figured. Mr Foot never came close to yours I always wished I could have snaped out doubles like you do back then( 81' thru 91') Jo Jo ain't got nothin on you!
rocknrollhoocheecoo 10 months ago
It's obvious daddy got you a kit for your 5th birthday. Who you kiddin?
rocknrollhoocheecoo 10 months ago 4
@rocknrollhoocheecoo
GrooveDrummin 10 months ago
@GrooveDrummin I had a set of cheap bongos my sister gave me and used wooden chop sticks for my first drum set. I was desperate as well...My parents still didn't see my love for the drums so it wasn't until I was an adult that I bought my own set. I did find that the desks at school, the ones with a flip up lid, had a very cool sound and I did a lot of hand drumming on those. Anything that I could hit to make the drum sound satisfied my need!

thanks for sharing your story
GrooveDrummin 10 months ago
@GrooveDrummin I think these old stories are great and thank you for starting it by sharing yours. My next goal is to get my right foot under control like yours. Those broken triplets with one bass pedal is the Holy Grail for drummers!
MrMike3865 10 months ago
Dude you're sick. Guitar player of 28 years and that's the first time I've ever "seen" that done. Very few players can do it right. Great instruction too.

Eliminator pedals? How do you like the responsiveness compared to others?
mother66 10 months ago
@mother66
The Pearl pedals are very fine pieces of gear. I find them to be effortless to play and smooth as silk. Quick action too, I highly recommend them. The Speed King in comparison lacks the smoothness but makes up for it in action.

1:58 What is the name that song?
LEVITHDRUM 10 months ago
Damn man, no matter how hard i try, my pedal just will not let my foot play fool in the rain, i think it might be something to do with my tension as on my old pedal i could probably have played it, and that old pedal was horrible quality :S
discohunter12 11 months ago
@discohunter12
I always tighten the spring(s) on my pedal very tight. The springs on my Speed King are couple turns from max! This should help you get more speed.
GrooveDrummin 11 months ago
@GrooveDrummin I just remembered, not fool in the rain, its the immigrant song that i cant play, but thanks for the advice man!

@GrooveDrummin ahh cheers man im havin the same problem......by the way outstanding drumming and vids brother.

@Soler1441931
lol, I can't dance and you'd probably laugh if you saw me but the idea is to stay light on the feet using the ball of your foot, similar to tap dancing :)
GrooveDrummin 11 months ago
@Soler1441931
kind of like tap dancing on the pedal
GrooveDrummin 11 months ago
its not a lesson for me.. I think your just showing performance... but its soo fucking awesome! I really wish I can do that, my footwork sounds like no one would ever like it. fuck my feet.

Wrong, aside from playing a couple Bonham beats I am doing what comes naturally to me, it's my style...

I notice you dont really use your toes but the flat part of your foot nears the toes Correct/ How did you get the pedal set to make it look so balanced...nice job
Nootherlove1 11 months ago
@Nootherlove1
The big toe is definitely used but as you noticed, the ball of the foot is the primary area. Think of it as bouncing a ball on the pedal. The bounce (back) is just as important. Thanks.
GrooveDrummin 11 months ago
@GrooveDrummin In the beginning of the video it looks like the front of your foot(Toes) are not even touching the pedal, sorry for the questions for your technique is the best I have seen in a long time, its perfection.
