People need to remember that Jeff Buckley's cover is of John Cale's version, not any of Leonard Cohen's incarnations. Cale and Buckley use a different combination of verses than the various Cohen takes I've heard, and therefore it gets a quite different meaning, and isn't that part of what makes this song great- that it stretches so wide and fits so many different moods?

Ok, Sarcasm's the wrong word - but I find this a more 'realistic' version. The mix of ordinary imagery - kitchen chair and godlike joy and how love can be base and ordinary, godlike and joyful, equally is mirrored in the music and vocal tone whereas Jeff's focuses on the God-like aspect and misses that coarse, base, rough and readyness good old Cohen brings to his words...

I have heard & liked many covers of Hallelujah. But so often I just have to go back & listen to Leonards version. And for the ignorant, the man is a legend. He never sang a song he didn't write. So the emotions you hear in his songs are his emotions, his words.

There are few artists who have no equal in the world of music & Leonard is right up there in the top 10 in my opinion.
