I spend about 99% of my time listening to music I like or music I haven't decided on yet. I just find it amazing that that this band is on all the "best" lists when they are really not that good. With alot of production they have a certain slickness, but playing live they are simply awful. If you like them and you are confident in your opinion then my comments shouldn't bother you. It's when they don't like my opinion but they think I might be right that it seems to bother people.

Just for the record the song begins in 3/4 they sing then they take abreak. they come back in with drums and at this point the song is in 4/4. the song remains in it for the rest of the song. if u listen the keyboard plays 3 3 3 3 4 on the arpegio when it goes to 4/4 do the math.

first of all, i've seen them a few times and they don't thrive as well in a festival atmosphere.

second, they've since incorporated the huge beats from merriweather and its it sounds ten times better.

third, they're also a lot more comfortable now playing as a three piece.

what people need to understand is that merriweather is a studio album to begin with. all of the equipment, the synths, the layers, and the vocal recording is all geared towards the studio. and when u actually sit down and listen to the entire album u can understand how much work went into making that album sound SO FUCKING GOOD. they take a huge risk performing these songs live, yet they just say "fuck it" and do it and i guess u gotta just respect that and smile :)

I realized I really loved this band when I saw how different this was from the album version, yet how I loved it equally as much. Maybe love isn't the word, utmost appreciation sounds about right.

when animal collective plays live, it isn't intended to sound at all like the album version. their whole thing is exploring musical boundaries, and that mostly is reflected in their vocal work when playing live. they focus on a minimal instrumental influences, and instead elaborate vocally. it isn't for everyone, but i personally appreciate the creative insight that goes into a live show.

sorry dude, but for the most part the dead, phish, other renowned "jam bands" could sing somewhat in tune and perform at high levels. that's what made seeing them live entertaining. yeah things dropped off a little once jerry got into heavy stuff, and trey has his off nights, but none of those guys would dare step foot on a stage and sound like this. you can blame avey's screams sounding bad on the mix, but no good mix is going to fix panda bear's godawful pitch. embarrassing.
