How does the ref let McCaw unbind when the ball is still with the second row, then run away from the scrum before the ball is picked up and become the first receiver? Even wikipedia would tell the ref that is illegal.
Did McCaw stay bound until the ball was out of the scrum? No because he was first receiver about 2 meters away from the scrum. He came up way too early to be legal.

HAHA - McCaw is a legend. He tried it on the first scrum and was a good 5m away before the ball came out but didn't get blown for it - so tried it again on the second and the ball came to him. Good on him - play the ref and if they don't spot it you get away with it. (Although the AR should have called it for the ref to be fair...)
@Shitcakes26 O'Connor can only come off his goal line once the ball is touched with the hands by anyone involved in the scrum. He has clearly arrived at the scrum even before Read touches the ball who then passes to McCaw. He is a long way offside but of course the Wallabies never break any rules and are always hard done by.
The problem with our scrums isn't that opposition players break off early, it's that we have the weakest scrum of the top tier teams. You can highlight one case of a player breaking early, but ultimately we have not paid enough attention to scrumming, and it shows. If we are going to claw NZ or even SA back we need to improve this. It is absolutely embarrassing watching us scrum against England (although we do beat England in almost every other aspect - bar kicking).
as I see it, richie was breaking away from the scrum early and getting away with it, he has to wait for the ball to be out., he was breaking away as soon as the AB's had control of the scrum. he broke away and formed part of the backline, leaving 7 players to PWN 8 players. as fun as that is, it's actually illegal in this case.
Also the flanker has to be bound up to the shoulder, so the entire time McCaw is only touching the scrum with his hands he should have been penalised. But, he got away with it so well done at the end of the day!
McCaw tests the ref to check what he can get away with... and then he adapts to the ref's rulings, if you ask me any smart rugby player should do that...

HAHA - McCaw is a legend. He tried it on the first scrum and was a good 5m away before the ball came out but didn't get blown for it - so tried it again on the second and the ball came to him. Good on him - play the ref and if they don't spot it you get away with it. (Although the AR should have called it for the ref to be fair...)

The problem with our scrums isn't that opposition players break off early, it's that we have the weakest scrum of the top tier teams. You can highlight one case of a player breaking early, but ultimately we have not paid enough attention to scrumming, and it shows. If we are going to claw NZ or even SA back we need to improve this. It is absolutely embarrassing watching us scrum against England (although we do beat England in almost every other aspect - bar kicking).

as I see it, richie was breaking away from the scrum early and getting away with it, he has to wait for the ball to be out., he was breaking away as soon as the AB's had control of the scrum. he broke away and formed part of the backline, leaving 7 players to PWN 8 players. as fun as that is, it's actually illegal in this case.
