well both Matt and Tim are abselutely great but to my opinion tim's high notes sound like a witch's cry but Matt Fucking Barlow's sound like epicness itshelf!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think both of them made great songs with Iced Earth. I can honestly say I don't like either of them singing the other's music but Ten Thousand Strong and Watching Over Me are my two favorite Iced Earth songs.
My starting album was Declaration Day, so I was biased toward Ripper. Matt is very good, but people don't want to realize is that Ripper fits VERY well with Iced Earth, Jon even said that Ripper's voice is the voice he hears when he writes the songs, they both have their songs, and so of coarse it sounds weird with the other singing. And now that Matt retired again, in case you didn't know, I want Ripper back.
something about Owens just irks me when he sings the Barlow stuff...he seems to be struggling. It just doesn't sound RIGHT. Barlow has that 'Paul Stanley' vibe that made him so great with Iced Earth--I'm so glad he's back. BTW--did anyone see the very GAY album cover of Rippers new 'Play My Game' cd? I guess he sits home and plays GTA on his Playstation alot-or he wants to fool all the wiggers out there into buying his album thinking it's RAP! Oh-and he can't write his own material for SQUAT.
THREE OF MY FAVORITE SONG!! Both by Owens and Barlow. They both kick major ass!! But Iced Earth is for Barlow, not Owens. Although I'm glad Tim Came in and several songs are really made for him and not barlow like Declaration Day, Attila, Ten Thousand Strong and some others...but the true voice of Iced Earth is MATT BARLOW!!
I used to agree. But i got so used to Ripper. I dont want to hear anymore Barlow. The new album is not very good compared to barlows other shit. Ripper ftw
thats fine u can stay home w/ ur GN and FA albums while us barlow fans go hear real IE w/ the true voice of IE. have fun. and thx for not wasting any tickets.
yes you are right. he can hit indeed. ripper has a fierce scream though... but above all (i mean not only ripper) matt is one of my all time singers along with dickinson, mercury etc...
hey good point dude im guessing ur a singer or at least study singing? yeah they both have there own ways of showing their emotions through their singing their both good i just think matts mellow dark sinister heavy voice goes better with all of the emoions schaffer seems to like displaying but play a really high pitched guitar note with owens copying it haha awesome thanks for ur input later
yeah ripper might beable to hit those high notes pretty well, but in my opinion he doesnt have much variety, and he cant sound anywhere near as sinister as the barlow, and on top of that, matt can hit the high notes as well. That was for all the barlow bashers. peace
and on tims defense. barlow can't sound as evil and fierce in those high notes. whihc is a lot harder to do than mellow our your real voice or make it nasally
i've seen his version of 'The Hunter' and i thought it was good too. Ripper is an outstanding singer, one that'll go down in the history books of heavy metal, but Matt is just the greatest.
ripper voice has more of an upbeat tone--- it give the songs and overall aggressive feel, as opposed the matt's voice which gives the songs a sorrowful feeling.
i am happy to have matt back, but will miss the ripper!!!!would have loved to hear ripper perform on dantes inferno, vengeance is mine
Ripper, for his high vocal range, CAN'T SING DANTE'S INFERNO. He can't sing baritone/bass, if you heard Dracula's intro (the lowest part singed by Owens in Iced Earth), sounds nasal and horrible. He's a guy with a High register, not to sing songs like Dante's Inferno. That song is MATT BARLOW (R) xD
Blind Guardian kicked everyone's ass that evening friend including your's :) Blind Guardian had one of the best EQ's from the sound Iv'e heard, even if the video was touched up. I love Iced Earth but the sound guy fucked up, not them.
Dont get me wrong he's a good singer just not for iced earth, if your an iced earth fan you need a singer with some strong emotions, but i respect owens, i dont know how Matt does it but he can put emotion in his high pitch screams, unlike ripper who just reaches that same note every time. and again dont get butt hurt, i dont mean to offend you owens' fans.

Hmm, I dont know how Matt will handle the stuff from the Ripper years. But we will see, looking forward to hear Declaration Day with Matt on vocals.
Overall, he just fits much better to IE than Owens though they're both great singers. Lets just hope the next album wont be as boring as Framing Armageddon, because no one, not even Matt, can save songs like those.
honestly, I think we can all agree that Matt had a bigger range of vocals and did a better job on the albums than tim can. However, I think Tim has a little more attitude live and to be honest I am a little upset I won't ever get to see Tim perform the songs from Something Wicked pt 1 live. I just hope Matt nails the new songs as well as Tim laid them.
yeah i have to agree that was iced earth in their prime. i think its just my fear as to how matt is going to sing now considering john apparently 'begged' him to join iced earth again. oh well, we'll have to see

I like both singers very much and this was a killer perfomance by The Ripper!
But Violate is Barlow's for me.
ps
and what Edgothorin said is not true,Matt CAN be evil on his high pitxhed(Damien,Dracula)

I cannot stand hearing Ripper's pathetic attempt at Violate. It sounds so fake and forced.
Songs like that make me glad Jon kicked out that Rob Halford poser and brought Matt back.
abominae1 3 years ago
Actually i think that Violate is the only song that Ripper makes "almost" as good as The God Barlow.

This doesnt sound wicked like the stuff from Matt. And in no way would I ever want to hear Owens desecrate Dante's Inferno.
Matt's vocals just sound so evil, and upbeat tone does not sound aggressive by nature , upbeat is cheerful or happy..
