I agree that the ability or liberty to dissent should be available. Theologically speaking, Jesus's dissenting opinions on God's will propped up the foundation for Christianity. Politically speaking, Thomas Jefferson once commented that "dissent is the highest form of patriotism." Ultimately, those that fight norms within proper constructs, will make the strongest impact.

Dissenting opinions are neccessary for cultural and scietific growth. However, there are those that think that anyone who doesnt think like them is instantly wrong and should be dismissed. i'm not saying you HAVE to respect anyone's beliefs. some peoples' beliefs deserve respect and some peoples' beliefs don't, and there should be a standard by which that is judged. it's absurd to say i should respect the belief that women should be beaten if they "allow" themselves to be raped. it's absurd to say i should respect the belief that homosexuals deserve to die.
i respect only beliefs which are DESERVING of respect.

I agree that the ability or liberty to dissent should be available. Theologically speaking, Jesus's dissenting opinions on God's will propped up the foundation for Christianity. Politically speaking, Thomas Jefferson once commented that "dissent is the highest form of patriotism." Ultimately, those that fight norms within proper constructs, will make the strongest impact.

I find it a bit odd that you say that one should keep ones mind open and still talk about the "correct opinion". Believing in a "correct opinion" is a great way to close your mind. The more acceptance you can have for all perspectives, the more you will understand, but you will never find the "correct" one, as there is no such.
This is of course my opinion, probably not correct.

Dissenting opinions are neccessary for cultural and scietific growth. However, there are those that think that anyone who doesnt think like them is instantly wrong and should be dismissed. They attack the person and not the idea on it's merits. These attacks make others gun shy about expressing views. The worst are those who use and abuse the courts to force thier views on others becuase they cant win in the arena of ideals.

Atheism has went through changes throughout its history. The term Atheism wasn't even coined until the 16th century.
However, christianity has been around for thousands of years with little to no changes in the doctrine/practice (whatever you may want to call it).
Yes, humans did decide which historical books would make it into what we now know as the holy bible. It also still has a strong following, based on faith and opinion of that faith. However even in modern times........To be continued
