The Ghost strum (missed strum) is to create space between actual strumming and to keep correct timing. You cannot technically strum down twice without coming back up in between. On that up movement you have the choice of either strumming or missing the strings in order to go back down. This is how strum patterns are created and they each bring a different uniqueness to a song.

Yes the guitar is out of tune. The strings were very old & just wouldn't work. I changed them soon after posting the vid. Hope the instruction helped out!
