Sills was a singer and actress extraordinaire! Beside the ravishing singing, watch her at 3:18 - her whole demeanor changes in this one phrase. On Ecoutez-moi, she is begging him; on Rapalle-toi, she knows she's got him!! The greatest Manon.
This is my favorite youtube clip of this duet. I find Mr. Price's voice to be nothing less than amazing. It retains the charachter of a young man but with the strength of a mature opera singer. The subtitle translation is pretty accurate. YAY!
Tears came to my eyes as I watched this scene from Manon I have been a fan of Beverly Sills for over 55 years and was fortunate enough to have seen her performances in so many operas. She was great in all, but I think Manon was her masterpiece. Are there any plans to put the VHS on DVD, before it is lost to the world?
No. He was my voice coach once upon a time and I knew both his son and his wife. He's still a nice guy with a striking voice. These days he's a professor of music at Pepperdine University.
Sills was one of the greatest Manon ever, she knows how to get into the role like no one else, her phrasing is to die for,why cant young singers listen to performances like this and learn.Magnifique!Brava!
I will comment that in my idea of Manon, she wasn't consciously manipulative- Bev's smiling at certain points makes me think her character is using Des Grieux and that her passion for him isn't real. That would make her character completely dispiseable. That said, this is the best most passionate & believeable I've ever seen this scene done! Molto Brava!

It seems you knew him? There's a bit of a debate going around between some of my friends, perhaps you could answer. Is he gay?
