Grand music Terry! (what my Northern Michigan, USA wifi connection will let me hear of it so far) I am sending this vid to my youngest brother to settle a bet and prove to him I am not always out of my tree and the Irish musical tradition includes polka.
No such music as the music that comes out of Sligo. Thank you and your kind for giving it to the world. Cheers!
@SuperBetty213 Oh yes, polkas are very much part of the tradition - especially down in County Kerry. You find them in many counties - in Clare with the Kilfenora Ceili band, - in my native County Donegal also etc. Glad you enjoyed them but you will find many more accomplished musicians playing polkas on YouTube.
@terrygrif Now that my wifi connection is fixed I stand by my original comment, grand, this will definitely be in my Christmas playlist. Of all the various types of music I enjoy, Irish traditional has become my truest love because those who play it are so truly humble and generous with their gift. Thanks again.
@IrenaMV Thanks Irena. Probably my favourite piece is that melody "Fanny Power" by O Carolan. I sometimes do it as a duet with a friend who plays flute. She puts lovely harmony to it. It just makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up!! lol
@terrygrif Good Morning Terry, funny you mentioned your hair standing up. That are my criteria for good music. When I get goose bumps I know the music is good.
Thank you so much Irisheyes. In truth I play the polkas too fast. This is due to the influence of the Scottish music in my part of Donegal. I need a teacher with a big stick keeping me in tempo!! LOL
A very dynamic tune inspires everyone for a dance. Its probably not easy to play. May I ask for your E-mail address, for we can change scores, I have a big one, but none of them are irish or scottish. Istvan
LOL Terry. This floor is littered with kids toys and I am too tired to pick them up, too tired to dance, but not too tired to sit and listen to you play. Great Irish tunes and you are doing a great job playing them. Thank you for sharing your music. Fran
Many thanks for the kind comment. Yes, the third polka is known as also as "The Rose Tree". These tunes tend to have several names depending on which country you are in - and indeed sometimes in which part of a country you live in. Variety is the spice of life!! LOL
You're right. A lot of songs used the name Erin - Even Thomas Moore - "Let Erin Remember" or "Come back to Erin Mavourneen". Probably the sound was more poetic.
You are a great source of knowledge Macangusagain. Many thanks.
as you know, I love the happy and fun songs and this one is certainly one of them! I love seing you happy and it is lot of fun to listen to the song and to see your video!
Well What a great suprise! The timing was great. I just got a new computer witha 25 inch High Def monitor. The first thing I got to watch a,d hear was you doing an outstanding job on those Polkas. I even broke out my drums to play along with you. Two Thumbs up! Great Job thanks Terry and have a great new Year. All the ways from California
Thanks for your kind comment Neal. I think the polkas were just a bit too fast but I have that Donegal/Scottish tendency to play very fast. I need someone standing over me with a big stick shouting "Slow down, slow down"!! LOL
What a great way to get ready for the New Year. These are some of my favorite tunes. I am always happy when I see a new video appear. I hope you have a wonderful, safe New Year!

In some parts of Ireland they play the polkas very fast to suit the dancers. These might be nicer taken at a slower speed for listening. Many thanks.

You would need to have tons of energy to dance these polkas at the speed I'm playing at!!!! LOL I've a lot to learn yet Fran.
Thanks for saying you enjoy them. All the best for 2010.

the suspected start of the spelling Eirinn in Scottish Gaelic is an old Scottish song,Bold-Erin-Go-Bragh ,2 verses-
"My name's Duncan Campbell from the shire of Argyll
I've travelled this country for many's the mile
I've travelled through Ireland, Scotland and a'
And the name I go under's bold Erin-go-bragh
One night in Auld Reekie as I walked down the street
A saucy big polis I chanced for to meet
He glowered in my face and he gi'ed me some jaw
Sayin' "When cam' ye over, bold Erin-go-bragh?"

terrygrif 2 years ago
In Scottish Gaelic it is Eirinn , and sounds oh so soft and sweet !!!
Macangusagain 2 years ago
so it's Eirinn gu brath agus Albainn gu brath , in Easter-Ross Gaelic
Macangusagain 2 years ago
Yes, we have the form Eirinn also but that's the dative case (in Eirinn, go hEirinn etc). The nominative case is Eire as in "Tá Eire beag".
All the best,
Terry.
