  • Thumbs up if you searched "what should i search on youtube"

  • Nice work! Very clear and understandable.

  • cool clip thanks for sharing ..

  • Thanks for the information.

  • Thanks for sharing Matt, knowledge is power in todays world.

  • Thanks for being so clear regarding MayDay. Long tail are so important. I start loving SEO and all the learning process, but it changes so fast that no one can never be the best, it is like studying medicine, to be the best you need knowledge and knowledge needs to be updated all the time.

  • oh he doesn't know what he is talking about

  • Ugh, what a lame answer, he just repeated what he said over and over again.

  • Continued_ Consider the end result. You loose less customer base and at the dame time you also gain customer base. So try it...you just might be surprised at the results. And by the way, when you do, You can easily locate me. I think I might have a bit of financial benefits coming on this one. Surely you'll claim you already thought if it. But I just put it in writing so, lets' hear everyone say " where's the money! Really, isn't it time to see a new generation of GOOGLE EEES. Call it GOOGLE EZ

  • Continued! I have become extremely frustrated with search engines. They all seem to follow GOOGLES model and it simply no longer works, least not for me. There is no reason why GOOGLE of all others can not offer this as a search result criteria. It's a simple easily offered results oriented search engine end result. It should and could work. So the question is, why don't we have it yet? My take might be it's not as cost effective. Well GOOGLE I disagree. I feel it is more cost effective if you_

  • I have come to the conclusion that the future of search engines must include a segmented search definition search line. Another words, if GOOGLE wishes to produce what customers truly want. They must give customers just that. A defined search tab search criteria. Plainly put, the search line needs to be less general and more specific. Example ( 720P ) ( Invention of ) thus producing only sites, article and material pertaining to the search itself. Not simply ever article that has 720 or 720P !

  • Matt, you kill many web and blogmaster ..

  • Hello sir,

my site is not coming in SERP, I got a tool , then i got my site is in the Google sandbox . if my site is in the sandbox so what should i do for get it back.

    please help me

  • I found this video very interesting. It's clearly showing that Google is not at all transparent. Instead (as people have said below) Google's aim with this update was to force many organic traffic websites into paid traffic.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Google is not a big friendly teddy bear. They are just out to make money by providing results to their users... Even if their users don't know that those aren't the best results.

  • Maybe I'm an anomaly, but I benefited from the change. My traffic is way up. But again, from the beginning, I used original content on my sites, not just posting to throw up internet real estate and ads. Over the year, my traffic is up over 300%. I actually get very little traffic from search engines (>5%), we're a niche site, but we're way up in traffic for our keywords.

  • its all about money. They want to make more money with adwords. You will also notice they changed there google keyword tool. They dont want you getting good research to get seo results. Thats less money for their adwords. Money is what motivated this change. There needs to be a new search engine to take them on.

  • This just means that we must focus on our website to make it look more relevant for the search results. It's just proves that google just wanted to provide the best results for their users.

  • Search : Message For Matt Cutts

  • Seriously, that cheesy smirk he gives at 2:30 is at the very end of EVERY Matt Cutts video - and it pisses me off!

  • thank you for your time ;)

  • This video is nothing but BS PR... It is only a quality win for Google. Now they can make us pay for the long tail keywords. Their stock price has gone through the roof because of this. I wish I had been smart enough to buy last June when I realized what they were doing.

  • Surely long tail searches are more focused, and the results should be more targeted, and therefore of greater value to the searcher. Why are they being penalized? I don't geddit!

  • Thank you for the tips! Ranking well is always a big concenr

  • thanks mate

  • Matt, do you think this is "give high quality results"?

Please, check this screen shot: extremista[dot]com[dot]ar[bar]fotos[bar]strange[dot]gif

  • If this means making those pesky spammers lives difficult, then I am greatly relieved.

  • Quality ? how about internet redlining, How about monopoly violating the commercial freedom of speech of thousands of sellers, Quality ? so they wont be carrying sql server attacks and crap anymore ?

  • Dude, all this "authority" stuff is pissing me off. Tell me Matt, how the hell does one become an authority when you are selling simple goods. For example, I want to sell high quality plain shirts at the best possible price.

If I can deliver, then that's what should make me the authority. Not developing content, writing useless article etc.

Google needs to learn how to differentiate between people who are searching for something to buy, and people who are searching for an authoritative site

  • I haven't noticed any changes on my sites yet.

  • My sites get mostly long-tail searches. I didn't notice a significant change in site traffic.

  • is W3C validation increases effectiveness of SEO?

  • @asif4it google it

  • @asif4it No it doesn't matter that much.. Just stroked the ego of developers.

  • Thankyou very much for this information. I would like to say as a user, I do enjoy the return results of my own searches when looking for important information online. Thank you, although some folks may have lost the rankings they desired, I certainly like the results I am getting when I do searches as a user.

  • @LanceWinslow4 I like google search, but damn get off your knees

  • your hairs look cool, what API you used?

  • I agree Realfullbar.., if it makes it better that's a good thing.. Perhaps it's too soon to tell, but I kind of see the change favoring authority websites even when they're not the most relevant or what the user wants. This creates frustration when you're not able to find the exact search strand you're searching for.. Again, I could be wrong, but this is the impression I'm getting out of this.

  • Long tail searches are usually done intentionally, because web searches weren't getting specific enough and showing the right sites they needed with only shorter tailed searches.. I feel this honestly takes away from users that are looking for relevant search results and instead of delivering them as before, the results are manipulated showing the same websites with the most authority over and over again, that they likely already seen.

  • I am a Google fan, however some things leave me perplexed. It's amazing how often Google changes things. You would think by now they wouldn't want to mess with an already proven system that has gained such a large market share.. Although I believe this has taken away from Googles advantage in relevant results.

  • @scott231us They do have the option to make their results better, right?

  • Like the hair back, Matt.

One thing you didn't go over was how long is a long-tail phrase? I mean is like black-leather-executive-desk-chair too long, and should it just be leather-executive-desk-chair or just executive-desk-chair? Or chair?

When is long-tail too long tail or is that one of the deep, dark Google secrets that you have to protect with your life?

  • Someone can tell me what a long tail search?

Hello jazz0900 finding long tail is one that is composed of five, six or more words (key) held by a person at the time of your search or query in search engines (long sentences) greetings.

  • Interesting, although it does not seem to have had any impact on my sites which all target longtail

  • I spent years perfecting my site so it responds to highly targeted searches with no fluff. I've tested extensively and know my users like instant gratification of finding what they want in one click. Site passes all published google guidelines and converts really well. Yet it got whacked and now my livelihood is 90% gone. If I stuff in text 'content' conversions die. What can I do? Goog controls most traffic yet is secretive about 'quality' - we need recourse, or regulation, here.

  • Look at the subtitles: today's question comes from Brian in seattle Washington Brian ass many are talking about losses of traffic with long hill searches any points to a natural do you recall I was wondering if you could give us an update on what is happening with google right now caffeine update however the change temporary okay I think that's a question a lot of witnesses have been talking about its own plan to change the dress xDD
  • Jazz0900:

    Head search - credit cards

Long tail search - Capital One cash back credit card apply

There will be tons more traffic on head searches, and only a few on long tail searches. However, the long tail is where the actual buyers of products will be, so experienced web masters will know to try and rank for long tail keywords.

  • anyone can tell me what a long tail search is?

  • algorithmic background XD

  • How can you truly determine the results are high quality with this current change? Wouldn't you have to actually see some result to determine that or are you simply seeing better CTR's with this change. Would love to know how you determine "quality"

  • I don't believe this is a genuine goog;e video. he is not using a mac. Highly suspect.

  • great matt.... you did it again. congratulations... you ARE the man....

  • Nice hair Matt!

  • Where did you get hair? Is it a Google widget?

  • @MaderaGuy

    LOL - Brilliant! X-D

  • Ouch my frigging eyes hurt! LOL

  • the background is pretty disruptive..

just use the simple (white color) one.

  • Only Matt Cutts can get away with saying "orthogonal" and have it sound like a word used in normal conversation.

  • @simmonet lol

  • I like the bald Matt better.. you should challenge your team to do something else so they can shave your head again :D

  • First good to see your hair growing back matt,,,,, my direct problem is that the long tail searches are inclusive of SCRAPER sites addons to original content is what google seems to display in the serps even tho I am the creator of the material. As a small site owner, to combat the hundreds of returned scraper sites as @adithecool has suggested would take a life time for me. 300 scraper returns per post on my blogs is out of control when you realize that google LOGS me in to all of my accounts.

  • wtf? have you got a wig? you was balder than a coot in the last post.

  • 400 changes is a lot of changes..

  • That green background sucks. It looks stupid.

  • Thanks for the update, Matt! I also like the updated hairdo.

  • Thanks!

  • Search for "personal loans" without quotes. Tell how the websites in 2cd position "personalloansmania" and 7th position "personalloanmarket" are "quality" websites.

I can point out about 20 other websites exactly like this on the first page all over the finance niche.

    Good Job Google

  • @GuruCreation if you think the sites are spammy in any way.. feel free to report them.. and yes, there is someone who goes through each spam report :)

  • I would consistently get 1000 UV a day for the last 12 months. But my traffic has halved since the beginning of May. :(

  • Are you usin' Open source hair !

  • hair!!!

  • Long-tail keywords surely got smacked so badly, with example a "keyword + download" I had a first ranking, then with this new updates it just got into 5th place and 1 is just the link to the official "keyword" page, 2nd is to 'keyword + buying" and so on, but the real deal people are looking for the "download" is now on the 5th place. Quite a nerf here and shame to loss many long-tail keywords that we have worked on to some irrelevant sites that just spammed more with simple backlinks.

  • many will now think: *shit*
