I saw George many times but as a Man City fan. Each time he got the ball I would think "oh fuck, somebody hack him down". I emigrated to Canada and in 1978 I drove with 4 friends 220 miles to Toronto to watch him play for Tampa Bay against Toronto. No one expected the turn out and we didn't get into the ground till half time . What a thrill to see him once more even though his peak had passed. What a time to grow up in and Best came to epitimize our time. Of all the best he was he certainly was.
Another piece of memorabilia. In the grove that I grew up in we had a neighbour's girl who married Wilf Mcguiness who was originally a player and became Man U manager. One day while playing football in our grove he came out of his inlaws house along with several Man U players and they had a little kick around with us for a few minutes. Everyone in our grove loved Wilf, very nice man.
I donb't know alot about Wilf, but I know he was respected, though unfortunately that went against the grain or our Georgie, he was a one man marauder and his own man on and off the pitch.

It's all a myth that defences are better organised now. The top defences in the 60's and 70's were incredibly hard to break down. Proof of that is why the likes of Moore and Beckenbauer etc are names that have become synonymous in football. I think people who question the old days of football should really have a look back and I feel if they do that, they will hold it in higher regard.

I will admit that the players are fitter, stronger and more finely tuned nowadays than they were in those days, however they are also softer, more protected, and whinge more when they dont get there own way. . Like you said mate, you have never seen the other guys play..so dont pass judgement. Best could get hit hard by men bigger, harder and stronger than the likes of JT and just get up dust himself down and come back for more, eventually taking the piss out of them. Remember that Best had to play on surfaces that were a lot of the time, as bad as Sunday league surfaces. He also did not have the footwear players do today and the ball was nowhere close to the quality of todays ones. In spite of all this, he was still able to display his sensational talent with the ball. I've no doubt if he were playing today, he would certainly be one of the best around. His dribbling ability was on a different level to the vast majority of players around currently.
again good point but there's only so much better boots, pitch's and balls can do. put it this way i believe an average 60's play would be about the same as a league 1 player today, now if you gave a league 1 play top of the line equipment it wouldn't make that big of a difference
When you're playing on a pitch that is so muddy it makes the ball so difficult to control, that makes a vast amount of difference. As for league one players equipment, it can't be compared with the 60's. The boots and ball at league one level are what any top flight player has now, where as the boots and Ball in Best's day were horrific. Therefore, it would make a big difference. Not to mention, the pitches at league one level are in far better condition than they were when Best was playing.

We know that Beckford would in all probability, not score as many goals in the EPL because the league he plays in is a weaker one. On the other hand, it's all speculation and opinion as to whether football in Best's day was not as superior as it is now. The game has certainly got faster, but in terms of the physical side, it was a lot tougher in Best's era. The standard of football I feel was not inferior to now either at the top level.

I met someone the other day, he was from Northern Ireland, he had lots of stories about the Northern Irish football team, so I thought I would ask him if he ever saw Best play, he had not only seen him play, he had played against him... his assessment of playing against best... 'he was magic. we couldn't get near him'.

He taught everyone how to play a decent bit of football and i too, am proud to be a United Fan and worship the great talent Manchester United have in every player. From George Best's time to 2009 with Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne rooney etc. I'm just pleased to be apart of the United Fans. Always and forever will all of us United fans remember what he did for us!

We know that Beckford would in all probability, not score as many goals in the EPL because the league he plays in is a weaker one. On the other hand, it's all speculation and opinion as to whether football in Best's day was not as superior as it is now. The game has certainly got faster, but in terms of the physical side, it was a lot tougher in Best's era. The standard of football I feel was not inferior to now either at the top level.

I hate how people even compare ronaldo with Best. Don't get me wrong, Ronaldo is a top player. But in terms of sheer ability on the ball, he's not close to Best. Best will always be by far the superior dribbler. His close control, speed and willingness to stay on his feet, just put him on another level. The Ulsterman was along with Maradona, the greatest player ever in my opinion. People who think modern day players are on another level to past generations, clearly have seen nothing of them.

He taught everyone how to play a decent bit of football and i too, am proud to be a United Fan and worship the great talent Manchester United have in every player.
