No offense to Chris, but this song belongs to Jimmy. His version is a million times better. Chris's just sounds like mumbling... muttering... it's emotionless... This song was made for Jimmy's voice to sing it. He gives it life, heart, and soul.
DOES ANYONE KNOW WHO ACTUALLY IS THE WRITER OF THIS SONG? i HAVE SEEN IT LISTED AS BOTH CORNELL AND GNECCO. EITHER WAY IT'S A GREAT SONG AND BOTH SINGERS DO AN AMAZING JOB. IT'S FUNNY CORNELL'S VERSION SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING GNECCO WOULD DO WITH IT'S GOTH-SYNTH ARRANGEMENT.
I totally have thought of jeff buckley too when listening to Chris sing! I mean it's different, but somtimes there's just something! I for one love them both!!!
This by far is my fav CC song ever, and I am a huuuuuuuge CC fan. What beatiful lyrics? I got to meet him after a show once and asked him to play this at the show he had coming up in Cleveland a few weeks later cause I was gonna be there, and he played it!!! Very nice man!
I've already got an mp3, but thanks. According to wiki (not 100% reliable, I know), the song was released to members of the Eleven Street team, whatever that is. Probably an online fan club. Not sure if they only got a digital file, or if there was a promo cd distributed.
Lol i'm glad chris is trying new things. I don't particularly like what he's done but hey, as long as it's what he wants. Its good to try new things. Im tlkin bout his music by the way...not his hair. lol. but his hair isnt bad now..jus different.
all this debating on who's version is better is so opinionated. So, in my opinion.....I pick Cornell's voice over the music from the Spiderman recording. The production for the movie definitely puts more feeling into the song........it's not all the singer. Chris definitely could have benefited from singing over that music.
So what's the story behind the song? On wikipedia it says Cornell didn't write the song (but we all know that wiki is reliable) and on the Gnecco vid it says Cornell had a part in writing it.
Its a demo for an Eleven song they had Cornell do the vocals on. This and Heart Of Honey were giving out to Eleven Street team members. Somethin like that if I remember correctly
My opinion when hearing Gnecco's version is that it didn't sound like he was singing his song. It sounded like what it was, Gnecco covering a Cornell song. He sings bazillion times better with his own songs.
I think it's a shame that Jimmy's version doesn't utilise the intro riff (you know, the da doodoodoodoo doodeledoodoo doo doo doo -thing), that sort of lifts the song to a whole other place.
I love Cornell's older stuff, and I also like Ours and Jimmy Gnecco. If Chris had sang this in the early 90's, he would have completely blown Jimmy away but in the present...Jimmy just out sang Chris (technically anyway). Some people may wail on preteniously about "feeling" and all that jazz.
Truthfully, listening to this version by Chris...it's like it never really started. Sounded fairly mediocre throughout which is obviously down to Chris's vocal problems in the past and in the now.
Chris in his prime had a much larger range in full voice than Gneeco does, and he has much more projected, powerful high notes. I think Gneeco's version of this song is equal to Cornell's however.
yeah he lost something. his tone during the years of his first solo album was magnificant. his highs were still around in '95 which is around when he had his first surgery as i understand it
the new album sounds pretty good vocally, compared to carry on anyway
actually, Jimmy Gnecco has a much broader range. and no most of it is not falsetto. its a mix of head and chest. so this is a preference here. this is very nice coming from the artist who wrote it. BUT, the Gnecco version has incredible brian may guitar as well. cornell yells here a lot. Jimmy finessed it.
OK, I think a lot of you guys are selling Gnecco a bit short here. He is not a more skilled singer than Cornell, I agree. But Gnecco is a great singer, and judging him just by Someone to Die For isn't fair or accurate.
Listen to some more of Gnecco's performances and I think you'll have a better understanding of how good Gnecco really is.
if your gonna compare cornell to a good or better vocalist you would mention someone like geoff tate or freddie mercury or even rob halford. Cornell is clearly a lot more vocally skilled than gneeco, especially when cornell was in his prime, gnecco is a good singer but he is by no strech of the imagination a better singer than cornell. end of story.
Hi :), well the video belongs to the single: 'preaching the end of the world'. The audio you hear is actually a demo.. I just inserted the audio of that rare song to this video, I thought it looked nice. I'm glad you liked it anyway :)
Well, eithor way we are lucky to of had this be on our time, they spent there years getting better eveytime for us, they all Freaking Rock.....;) its ok to appriciate it all....
Nope, not retarded. I said both were talented. Yes, Temple Of The Dog... wonderful. Calm the hell down. I'm an OURS fan so of course I favor Jimmy Gnecco. But, I'm also crazy about Chris Cornell's voice so... yes.... please calm down.
Jimmy fucking sucks. He sounds very one sided. What I mean by that is that he couldn't sing a heavy song if his life depended on it. Chris just can do so many different things and yet you still know its him. Not to mention more soul.
Jeff Buckley has a better voice than Kurt Cobain, I still love Kurt and I still love Nirvana. Freddy Mercury has a better voice than Scott Weiland, and I yet on the whole I prefer to listen to STP than to Queen. And Jimmy Gnecco has a better voice than Chris Cornell, even though I own everything by Chris and think he is a tremendous performer.
Furthermore I will even concede that the only version that trumps Chris's is the live one.

very wonderful song this one like it yes
toveksa 2 years ago
Actually I went through OURS.
Gnecco sounds whiney and basically uses falsetto and a whiny high register for most of the material.
I prefer Cornell's tone. He has a warmer tone, stronger vibrato, and stronger belt (especially in his higher register).
Not only that. Cornell has a 4 octave range.
Bout 100% sure Gnecco can't top that.
Besides this little competition between the two wasn't created by the artists. It was created by the fans of the artists.
JoeSidhu 2 years ago

dirkworld 2 years ago
The technique is called belting. It's been utilized in Rock by many great vocalists such as Daltrey, Plant, Tate, etc. It's more of a controlled yell.
Cornell wasn't belting the whole song. A lot of it has to do with the unique sound of his voice.
I think Gnecco is a great singer.
And head voice itself is normally referred to as a mix of chest and falsetto. It's called the chesty falsetto by some instructors.
JoeSidhu 2 years ago
