one day I'll run into another lesbian shoegazer and I'll fall in love and we'll not wash our hair together and we'll sit around telling each other how Sonic Youth conquers mainstream music. Now don't get me wrong, this isn't underground, because if it was it'd be a lot harder to find than this...but fuck top 40...and I was joking about the not wash our hair part.
does anyone else know that this released far prior to the grungggggggggggggeyyyyyyyyyyyyy era you dumb cocky musikicians. Write me back if you would like to live in reality........shaminism?hopelessink its everywhere it seems simple fabric....
Sonic Youth were a good band and all.. but they tended to jump onto whatever counter cultural phase was going on.. suck it up then spit it out when finished. Kind of in the tradition of Andy warhol and his factory followers.. SY did this with while jumping on the Hardcore bandwagon, then with postHC SST bands like dinosaur , then (as seen it this ridiculous video) the "grunge" era (thurston wearing flannel lol) .. Also They dumped Nirvana mind tour to jump on the Pavement bandwagon etc...
Why does liking coffee and good music automatically make one a hipster? Come find me in a Starbucks, and see if you think I'm a hipster. I'll be the dude with a torn denim jacket, a Cannibal Corpse shirt, jeans, and combat boots. And I'll be sipping a venti caramel macchiato, and likely jamming to Sonic Youth, or some other indie group.
What kind of fucking retard actually criticizes someone for hating hipsters? Hipsters were made to be hated. The hipsters in the intro are disgusting, but I'm more repulsed by the fat emo bitch.
Hipsters rule!ha! As for going back in time, I was a teenager and in a band in the 90's and it was a lot of fun back then. Although I think all the struggle the bands had then without the advent of the internet as we know it today really sucked. there was no youtube and you had to try to fund/make your own cd's on your pc. It was a great time for music though, seen lots of great bands!
Wow, what total derivative shithead 20-something hipsters. This album predates the mass exposure of grunge. In fact, their label felt that Sonic Youth would be the band to break the big time, never thinking about Nirvana. I know you fucks weren't born yet, but at least take a look at the date the albums were released.
I was a teen during the early 1990's -- and If I may add to the current commentary discourse -- "grunge" was a label abused and perpetuated by the media and corporate record labels to sell the contemporary music of the time to mindless consumers. Supposedly, Sonic Youth was poking fun at the "grunge" nonsense with their "Dirty Boots" music video. The truly great independent bands of that era knew that "grunge" was a meaningless joke. Nirvana, Mudhoney, Melvins, Sonic Youth, Dino Jr. etc...
...The most tragic consequence of the entire "grunge" fiasco is that every generation since thinks that "grunge" was some sort of legitimate cultural revolution and sound. There are people today that call themselves "grunge" as if it were some club you could belong to! Yes, some of the more popular Northwest bands of the time had a "grungy" or "dirty" guitar sound. This is most likely the influence of the bands they admired from the past -- Black Sabbath, Black Flag, etc...
"Grungy" is fine as an adjective to describe a sort of sound. As a genre of music, a label, an independent movement -- not so much. It's just rock and roll as far as I'm concerned. It's far more important for a band to keep it's artistic dignity intact. If you let a major record company dictate your sound; you are lost and worthless. It's funny, I always enjoyed the "Dirty Boots" video when I was a lad. I thought it made for a nice teenage romantic tale. I guess the video has more depth...
It wasn't grunge until it was over. It was just kick ass music--and besides this was before the "grunge" era!! Stop labeling----Just good music and bad music!!!! Sonic Youth was a great band--
so many people comment on this video with some "fuck i hate fuckin hipsters man fuck fuck", like hating hipsters constitutes some revolutionary opinion. oooh, what else do you hate?? ooh please tell us! do you hate "Bad" and really love "Good"? meee toooooo!!
@AlanPower3001 wow i was going to raise a hipster hating army and have it conquer half of europe but now im going to water the garden and have a cup of tea.
I LIKE TRYING REALLY HARD TO BE FUNNY ON INTERNETS OR DO I MAYBE I'M JUST DRUNK AND DON'T GIVE A FUCK ABOUT ANY OF YOU OR MAYBE I'M NOT DRUNK AND I'M JUST TRYING TO SEEM LIKE I DON'T GIVE A FUCK TO BE COOL AHHHHHHHHHHHH I TYPED ALL THIS OUT (BUT NO SERIOUSLY I'M DRUNK AND HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO DO BECAUSE I'M STUPID)
This video is not making fun of grunge, it pre-dates grunge in a way. This vid is just a nod to the youth culture and zeitgeist of the era. While Sonic Youth were never grunge per se (whatever grunge was exactly) they did have some things in common with grunge bands. And grunge kids went to their gigs and got high to their music.
Yeah, sure, it speaks about the type of fans the bands had. Sonic Youth and "grunge" bands like Dinosaur Jr., Nirvana and Mudhoney toured together/hung out alot and had a thing for sludgey noise and a sort of DIY ethic. i think Sonic Youth were the most "arty" of the bands i mentioned, they were New Yorkers after all. It's too bad that "grunge" got co-opted by the major labels and establishment. i guess some folks didn't care that that was the case, others did.
@Shirokinukatsukami Everyone always says that but I don't see why it's such a big deal. I mean, all the bands that major labels jumped on either sucked or didn't sell enough. Pretty much every real band just kept doing what they'd always done. Nirvana did whore themselves a bit though.
Well that's the thing, once "grunge" got co-opted by major labels, the scene lost much of it's DIY ethic and (what many derided as pseudo-grunge) bands like Bush and Stone Temple Pilots arrived, co-opting a style and ethic. New bands self-identified as grunge in order to be signed, grunge was pushed over other forms, and then major fashion chains like the Gap began selling "grunge" fashions and such and eventually what started as a local, DIY scene became a cliche, a uniform.
@Shirokinukatsukami But that always happens whenever something gets popular. It happened with punk and hip hop too. My point was that the real music wasn't affected by it because "grunge" was just a label that didn't really mean anything. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Sonic Youth etc. just kept on making records. DIY music never dies.
Sure they kept on making records, but that spark was gone. Who knows what would have happened to Nirvana, but the other bands you mentioned just ended up as warmed over '70s rock; they became classic rock radio staples and divorced from the DIY movement, they became answerable to executives and share-holders and multi-nationals and their edginess was long gone. Sonic Youth didn't really suffer that fate as they were a different kettle of fish to begin with. But grunge, well...
@Shirokinukatsukami You don't know what you're talking about. All those bands had complete creative control and with the exception of Nirvana, definitely could not be accused of selling out. 70's rock was always an influence from the beginning - Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd were an obvious on Soundgarden in particular. Their last 2 albums had some of their most experimental work.
There's nothing wrong with making money as long as you're making honest music.
I think it's rather funny how most of today's youth is generally conerned about "who likes what", You're basically classifying yourself in a category if you say, "Oh Wah wah, Hipsters like Sonic Youth, I hate them so much, they ruin it". You completely forget why you listen to the band in the first place, it's all about the fucking music. Get over the fucking categories and name-calling, after all, nobody is going out of their way to step in your life and cause dismay. Shut the fuck up.
DIE HIPSTER SCUM. Also Silversun Pickups totally ripped this video off in the "lazy eye" video. Also bonus points for the camera fixed right on the NIRVANA tee.
is this video supposed to be ironic Yes sonic youth is so cool that than can have a lame uncool video and it is ironiclly cool and not cheesy jk this sucks
yeah this song was epic ppl think grundge started in the seattle scene but in reality it started in the late 80's founding bands like Nirvana, and butthole surfers, and offspring, i can go on but
sonic youth had a unique way making videos and music and in my book i believe they were over looked after 91, 94 and litterly is off the face of the map
@sunburstdj yeah, i know wen bleach came out, kurt and kim were actually really good friends, i just thought it was funny that they were getting credit for there music b4 mtv discovered them, its pretty cool how references like the girls t-shirt can help get a band fammous, not that sonic youth was ever more famous then nirvana except the week that goo came out. lol
yo attention everyone. i really hope the people in the iintroduction see this, although it isnt like. the three of you are absolute trash. total trash, GET IT? HAHAHHA. thats the quality of joke i would expect from you. please stop doing whatever it is you think you do, and for everyone who wants to watch the video, there is another dirty boots video without the garbage. search for it on the main bar
I was thinking to myself as I was watching this that they should include this song on Rock Band 3 if there ever is one. I wish they would make a music game that appeals to those who like alternative/indie/college rock. It would expose people to bands they didn't know about and re-new an interest in the bands that haven't had a lot of credit given to them even though they have influenced music to where it is today.
Yeah. I wish I was a teen back in the hayday of Grunge. I was just a child back then. If there was such a thing as a time machine I would go back to the early 90s. That and the late 60s when awesome bands and musicians like Hendrix were around.
if you ever figure out how to accomplish that, hit me up, I've told myself the exact same thing and for the same reasons. The late 60's and early 90's were the best eras for rock
@LoungeAct88 I was there in the 90's about 18. Perfect age, and it was f'in awesome. You could be a hipster without being called a hipster! Now I'm fat and bold.
@IrishEyedBlue No, no you don't. I was there for all of that. Let me tell you this much. If you did not want to conform to all the mess, if you did not want to be like all the rest. If you just wanted to have some fun, or some buttons to press. They would do nothing but give you shit and cut you out. Leave you all alone and full of doubt, like some kinda drowning trout. You see, I was trying to be me, but none of them would be happy until they had messed with me? thats reality happy yet
some one on another thread said the Lazy Eye video was carbon copy of this one. they were right. that sucks cause i like Silversun Pickups but Sonic Youth came first and is therefore cooler.
One of my favorite music videos ever, as opposed to "Mote," which is one of my least favorite... Saw these guys just a couple of hours ago at the Gallivan Center in SLC. Excellent.
Seeing them at the old Masonic Temple aka the Concert Hall in Toronto will stand as one of my favorite concerts of all time. Shame they had to turn that amazing venue into a television studio when bands like Led Zeppelin, Sonic Youth, The Beastie Boys and a host of other great bands once graced that stage.
@phillyjim11 I hate people who hate things they know nothing about. In fact, I hate people who hate on people who are just being themselves. Wow, I guess I'm a hypocrite. p.s. there is no god, so find a new word that exists =] LIke golly, I hate hipsters.
This song reminds me of being in London sharing a flat with 3 american girls in 1991. I was 18 years old, and the 90s were in full swing. The NME and the Melody maker cost about 80p each, and there seemed to be something fantastic being released on a weekly basis. Now Im old and grumpy and cynical.
Dude....Your either 35 or 36 and that really isn't old. Then again I'm 18 at the moment so...I guess it's different from my stand point, but if your into this kind of music you can't be old at heart that's for sure.
I don't care what else has been said before, there is no need to introduce Sonic Youth you pretentious hipster fucks. Go away.

One of the best bands ever, but shouldn't they change their name to "Sonic Middle Aged" or "Sonic Duderino's" ?

I was thinking to myself as I was watching this that they should include this song on Rock Band 3 if there ever is one. I wish they would make a music game that appeals to those who like alternative/indie/college rock. It would expose people to bands they didn't know about and re-new an interest in the bands that haven't had a lot of credit given to them even though they have influenced music to where it is today.

There is some Sonic Youth on Rockband. I cant remember the song but i have seen/heard it... thnx for the comment

I miss the grunge days!!!!!!
reddawg1100 2 years ago 3
Yeah. I wish I was a teen back in the hayday of Grunge. I was just a child back then. If there was such a thing as a time machine I would go back to the early 90s. That and the late 60s when awesome bands and musicians like Hendrix were around.
IrishEyedBlue 2 years ago 24
if you ever figure out how to accomplish that, hit me up, I've told myself the exact same thing and for the same reasons. The late 60's and early 90's were the best eras for rock
LoungeAct88 2 years ago 12
someday they will find a way to go back in time. lol
IrishEyedBlue 2 years ago
@LoungeAct88 so by your logic, we're due for more good music in the 30's. So Stick around =P
bluepurpleglasses 1 year ago
@LoungeAct88 I was there in the 90's about 18. Perfect age, and it was f'in awesome. You could be a hipster without being called a hipster! Now I'm fat and bold.

It was awesome. I remember going to shows like this.
Jules242 1 year ago

This song reminds me of being in London sharing a flat with 3 american girls in 1991. I was 18 years old, and the 90s were in full swing. The NME and the Melody maker cost about 80p each, and there seemed to be something fantastic being released on a weekly basis. Now Im old and grumpy and cynical.
jamesbrunhilde 3 years ago 3
Dude....Your either 35 or 36 and that really isn't old. Then again I'm 18 at the moment so...I guess it's different from my stand point, but if your into this kind of music you can't be old at heart that's for sure.

well since U2's "Vertigo" sounds an awful lot like the chorus of this song, in a way they ARE still making music like this!
