Back in the early 80's (when TV stations still signed off), our cable system's antenna picked up KRON, channel 4, in San Francisco a few nights one summer once our local channel 4 station went off the air for the night. I grew up 100 miles north of Dallas, TX. I stayed up, waiting for the "station identification". It was strange watching the same episode of Johnny Carson 2 hrs after it aired locally. Used to pick up northern Mexico stations, Shreveport, Houston, and NM stations too.
After each time YT makes a display change, I sometimes see that some of my older vids are no longer playing as they were before, and I try to find a way around that. I noticed that this vid., which used to play fine as-uploaded, now looks like crap; yet in the HQ-mode, seems to run as before.. YT makes all of this very difficult to manage.
I think I've seen some boston stations skipping in here (~40 miles south of NYC)... even after june 12 - I've seen multiple nightlight's on channel 2 (wcbs and something else)
When I was a kid in Cuba back in the 1960's and 1970's, I turned on Miami's TV stations using an external 11 db.antenna, during early morning hours, many times I can only see channel 2,4, 6, 7, or 10 test pattern. Some of my friends had an antenna booster to get better reception, but it was too hard to find one in the black market -the only way you can get one- A lot of young people in western Cuba were fan of American Television.
Yeah, this stuff is strange and rare and you don't see it on television anymore. Also, I saw your WNBC pattern video; now that's rare; nice shot. I gave it 5*.
That was the second variation of the WNBC pattern; this one was the first (again, from 1975), and I think I saw a third where they had the 1979-80 logo variation where a redesigned "Proud As a" Peacock was placed in front of the 'N' logo.
Because of the transmission, I can give the colors thus: Inner top left quad - raspberry; outer top left quad - chartreuse; inner top right quad - leaf green; outer top right quad - light tan; inner bottom right quad (and far left side) - peacock blue; outer bottom right quad - purple; inner bottom left quad (and far right side) - canary yellow; outer bottom left quad - brick/maroon red. This combo was apparently unique to WNBC, as I didn't see any other station use it.
Seems like, as with many stations, WNBC at this point alternated between test pattern slides and electronic color bars. Again, I recall this particular T.P. variation first being used in 1975. 'tvnewsman' once had :26 seconds or so of this pattern, in color, with the '4N' logo that was used from 1976 to 1979. I also have a vague memory of the 1979 variation of the '4N' logo (with the peacock/N combo) being superimposed over this pattern.
If 400 Hz, probably so. WNBC seemed to be all over the place with tones, 425 Hz in 'tvnewsman's' 1976-77 clip and 825 Hz on 'TechnerVideo's' 1986 sign-off clip with the 'WNBC-TV NY' color bars. That plus 400 Hz on 'FuzzyMemoriesTV's' 1980 WNBC sign-off clip and, of course, here.
This particular pattern variation was from 1975(!), preceding the "4N" logo variation as in use from 1976-79 (and also slapped onto this T.P. design). Why they went back to use this earlier T.P. in '87, I'll never know.
Yeah, you can FAINTLY see the different "4" logo as well as the calls. The test card patterns are also different. So, WNBC's signal does stretch that far, huh?
When my local cable system still had Ch. 2 from Baltimore in its lineup, I could pick up New York's Ch. 2 whenever the Baltimore station signed off for the night.
Why is the screen shaking?

Yeah before the digital switch I enjoyed picking up far away stations late at night

Play this video by using the HQ-button on the player bar. This vid. used to run OK, but YT changes have since degraded it.
MSTS1 2 years ago
Because my YouTube has certain settings, it automatically plays on HQ - not only that, but maximum height of 480px. Not all YT'ers may have that.

I love that fact that I'm not alone in wanting to see strange things like this.
Thanks MSTS1.

Nice of you to say that, thanks!

wonderful signal

I've already done so. With a combo of Pantone color values from different sources.

was it broadcasted all static like this or was the the tv... lol

What you see is exactly what the cable operator ran through on channel 4.

Only if there was a old clip of Ch 7 WABC TV off the air from the 1970's showing the horizontal grid or color bar test pattern
accompanied by that 390Hz tone!
Tuberboy104 3 years ago
Did you ever get a chance to tape any clips
of Ch 7 WABC TV New York off the air showing its horozontal grid or color bars test pattern?
Tuberboy104 3 years ago
I didn't. All that I have of WABC is already up.
MSTS1 3 years ago
Thank you anyway!

I remember WNBC-TV using color bars in '87. I don't recall ever seeing this test pattern.

P.S. The tone sounds like 400 Hz.

Was'nt the tone on all the other renditions of the WNBC TV Test Pattern's including the
b&w 1959-75 one 425Hz?

It's a little something called E-Skip, happening only when the atmospheric conditions are right.
RolloSmokes 3 years ago
Except this was not received here with an antenna. For some reason the cable company had the signal and let it through.
MSTS1 3 years ago
This WNBC TV Test Pattern was excellent and brougth back so many memories!
Tuberboy104 3 years ago
Wha? That's very bizarre. I assume they get the WBZ signal via Satellite? So how would they pick this up?
crypticreign 3 years ago
WBZ was most likely off the air at that moment.
