  • @keetonbob this video is Michael Manring's "Three Moons," but he's playing FOUR basses. Now that's class.

  • Manring is beyond all, ever. We all hear the names of other "popular" bassists thrown around, but you never hear the names of the true masters, Manring being that, and perhaps the greatest to ever strum the bass. Just like Michael Hedges, most never heard of him, but he's easily the greatest acoustic guitarist who ever lived...and wouldn't ya know it, Manring played with Hedges for years.

Hats off to those who know...

  • Hipster "Yeah, I've been playing a guitar for years man. I'm pretty good"

Manring ".....>A< guitar? That's cute. Watch this."

  • Ive nevr seen anyone play three guitars at once before..Amazing

  • Look version PEREZ SCHNEIDER (PRESTO VIVACE)-MY THREE MOON (MANRING) VERY GOOD!!!!

  • how does it costs that bass stand?

  • Está to flipao el notas

  • He's a circus actor. Good one. I miss Jaco

  • @arinamix We all miss Jaco . . .

  • @davidhilton

Manring smokes all, unless Les did solo, i'd love to see that

  • it sounds just amazing

  • So it doesn't groove. Not all music has to groove in the traditional sense(R&B,Soul,Funk)But it has it's merits.Music like this represents everything that "Groovin'' cannot represent.

  • Fair enough... Technical mastery. But who here plays a "technical instrument?" This is elevator music for the latter end of the 21st century - it doesn't groove and seems a little lifeless if you listen to it on its own merits without watching the video too.

For the record, this is one performance with two different camera angles - you can clearly see everyone on-shot has the same clothes in both angles, and the second cameraman walks into shot at 40s in.

  • Greastest bass player EVER! ;)

  • Someone get this man a Chapman Stick!!! Hurry!!

    I'd love to see that.

  • I saw M.M. in Chicago last year at The Bass Club.I asked him if he has ever played a Chapman Stick considering all the tapping he does.He said he has and that he SUCKED at it!!I was amazed!

  • i always thought the song sounded a lil plain on recording but after seeing this and watching it with my own eyes, i didn't expect it to look like this lol. Very nice, beautiful song!

  • great bass player very different sound to wooten check out my channel for more

  • haha i had always heard about this. I never thought I'd see it. Michael is King!

  • Rediculous.

  • i want to see you playing it

  • CHRIST ALMIGHTY!!!!!!! would somebody please buy that man a cape?!!!!!!

  • surely he could place the third bass on a stand or table.

  • ooooor he could've had Paris Hilton hold it while wearing a bikini and at the end when she thinks she's getting all this applause he could smash his Zon into the back of her skull...as awesome as he is it would still be the greatest sound he's ever made w/ a bass.

  • Maybe a lucky volunteer got to hold it ;)

  • Cala-te.

  • ignorante... solo pasas pena no comentes

  • he escuchado mucha musica y a muchos bajistas

  • his brother teaches guitar where i live

  • never mind about my reply to rogerolcantara, he's using a hyperbass in this video... i thought they were newer... i have no idea why he uses multiple basses

  • get a grip mate. Thats impressive

  • I have heard his album "thonk" at least 500 times. i had no idea that he was playing three basses at the same time. I am not a bassist. I just liked the music a LOT! And so did my friends.

Do you think I am interested in seeing or hearing you play 3 gameboys at the same time?

  • Ok, how did you get a hold of "Thonk"? I've googled it, and that only gives you 6 hits :S.. Not that I'm just trying to download it for free, but it's not even available to buy it seems :S

  • Ok, sorry, I had googled "Thonk and Drastic Measures" cos that's what I thought the album was called.. found it now :)

  • why dont u upload a video of you playing 3 game boys at once and stay shut!!

  • @phreon2005 your youtube "favorites" seem to be made up of people sucking at 1/1 guitars

  • I think Mr. Zon needs to custom build a triple neck and let Michael flip out on one. MIchael is just really cool.

  • Wait, do you really thing he deos this cause he really needs all three instruments or just cause it looks cool

  • i think he does need the other basses coz some of the notes ring freely... and i'm not sure, but i think some of the basses are de-tuned...

  • yeah, i think it's so he can have different tunings... this was back in the day, before the Zon Hyberbass

  • I got to hold the bass when he came to Dallas a few years ago.

  • wow. that's pretty much divine.

  • the liner notes on the "thonk" album, say it best: "a deeply disturbed young man"...i saw him live with hedges and it just was thrilling!

  • haha i wonder how much the guy holding the bass got paid. i'd do it for free

  • genius at work

  • my God!! fantastic

  • that's just plain nuts...in a good way...

  • .....something is utterly strange and erotic, in all possible bad ways with this stunt..!

  • I once met Michael Manring. He's a really good guy. He actually let me play that purple bass that he's got his left hand on in this vid.

  • Blows Wooten out of the water! Woot! =D

    Funking awesome.

  • nah...he doesn't blow wooten out of the water...wooten can do on one bass what it takes this guy to do on 3...plus wooten has just got better musical sensibilites

  • Are you sure?? I think that both of you didn't understand so much of this artist... He can't be in comparison with Wooten...great artist this last one too, but extremely different! Moreover wooten it's a monster of technique, but he'll never get better musical sensibility... 1st good musician rule: don't NEVER do comparison between famous musicians...it's ridiculous!

  • just look to michael amnring 's discographie... he was learn bass with jaco....!

    wooten :grooOOOoooove and energy...more funky

    manring:sensibility,sound ...more jazzy

  • Anyone got a cleaner video of this?

  • He just needs to play the harp or something

  • replace guy with shelf

  • Nice piece but that fourth bass was unnecessary.

  • No, he had different tunings on all four of them, so he needed them all.

  • I think he uses a fretless...

  • lololol

    owned

  • Sometimes he does. Not all the time though.

PS his normal bass is a custom-made Zon Hyperbass. I'm not completely in the dark here ;-)

  • very repetitive

    jet so clean

  • this is a great piece of music and his chops speak for themselves. go MIKE!!

  • I think Zon needs to make Michael a nice triple neck bass.........

  • 4 neck ^^, would be awesome to see :P

  • I love this man with all of my heart! lol

  • Go Mike Go!! Keep that creativity flowing!! Yeah!

  • Someone had too much time on hsi hands, to learn that...

    Nice clip. Cheers

  • Well, I think this composition is great. I heard it before I knew he was playing on three basses...and it's just such a beautiful piece. Props to Michael!

  • Have you heard the studio version? It's a very coherent piece of music and can stand on its own. It's haunting, really. Especially when he does those half-step modulations in the melody with his headstock tuning keys. Love it!!

  • @gotrottin have you ever wrote and played a song three basses?

  • @gotrottin have you ever written and played a song three basses?

  • Yes he did play with Michael Hedges. "After the gold rush" and other pieces.

  • Did this guy play with Michael Hedges?

  • "This guy" is no stranger to Hedges. He played bass on nearly every Michael Hedges album.

He is the Michael Hedges of bass...often called Hedges's musical soul mate.

  • He is fantastic, but I had the fortune to see a double bill of Hedges with this guy and Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.

MAnring was great but Victor Wooten was better -at least that evening. It actually seemed like they were competing. Manring played 2 basses that night and then Wooten played 3. They all played together at the end for a couple encore songs.

    It was phenomenal.

  • Wooten and three basses? What song is that if I might ask?

I know Manring has used four basses when playing My Three Moons (sometimes he uses 3 or 4). He did so on Bass day.

If you dive more into their catalogues, you'll know that that Manring is much more of a heavy metal bassist while Wooten is more of a soul/funk bassist.

They're both monsters at technique. I've met Manring about a year ago. I'm looking forward to seeing Wooten.

  • holy shit..thats incredible

  • Nice..

Cheers to the guy who held up the bass without the slightest movement..

  • the best thing about this is that his technical virtuosity is understated by the brilliance of his compositional genius.

  • he's doing it stanley jordan-style...super freeakin' funky sweet

  • incredible

  • dammit, some summer I'm also going to play for like 16 hours straight :P

  • my uncle once held up a bass for Michael said it was one of the coolest things hes done

  • What can I say? He is a pure genious...

  • I got to have a lesson with Micheal

he is so kick ass he played for 16hrs. straight every day for a whole summer

  • maybe ive just been finding nothing but these videos but it seems to me like he uses lots of hormonics

  • Cool Bag Of Rhythm - Right On - WorldwidewelcomE - VIKING

  • Thanks for all the comments, everyone. Glad to have posted this for you guys.

  • That's my favorite michael manring composition!! Not just because of its astounding technical difficulty, but it's such a beautiful piece, too! Thanks for putting this up!!!

  • I have seen michael do this probably 15 times over the last 10 years, and i am still in awe of him, and i have been playing this type music for over 23 years.

  • I saw M.M. on tour with Windham Hill artists a few years ago; I stood up and applauded after I saw him play this. Thanks for posting it.

  • I WANNA BE HIS BASS HOLDER!!!!

  • If I ever see Michael Manring in the street somewhere, I'm gonna beat him up for being that good...just wanna clear that up...

  • MM triple dare anyone!!

  • amazing artist we can all learn from, thanks for posting this

  • it's hard when you choose someone like him to look up to. (also because I could'nt afford 3 zon basses in my whole life d'uh!!!) but this must not discourage us, there should be one m.m. and it's damn right this way. just listen to this piece...it's not a virtuoso mumbo-jumbo, it's state of the art inspiring charming NEW music. hail to the Man!

  • I think this is off of Thonk an excellent solo album of his. Wonderful sounding stuff.

  • it looks like hes using multiple harmonics on the same string on different basses in parts. a hapman stick couldnt do that because you would need strings tuned to the exact same pitch

  • Because a Chapman stick sounds nothing like 3 Zon basses in alternate tunings.

  • Not to mention that Chapman doesn't make fretlesses!

  • How the hell does he do that?

  • That was depressing. I'll never be that good at anything.

  • the beautiful thing about music/art is that you dont have to be! all that is required is that you do it as well as you can:)

  • hot damn!

  • I guess that with a Chapman stick its not the right way for him!!!

  • OMG THE GUY HOLDING THE BASS IS AMAZING , the one playing them is alright i geuss ;)

  • lol so true! that took much courage

  • Instead of tapping (noodling on?) four basses, why not just get a Chapman Stick! This seems like he's going to a lot of trouble for no good reason. Sorta like getting the snow off your driveway with a couple of tablespoons instead of using a shovel.

  • Maybe it's because he's a bass player not a stick player. He's playing like a fingerstyle guitarist, hammering ringing harmonics and letting the strings vibrate and drone while moving to another instrument that may be playing a stacatto rhythm. Also, there are different pickups, tone controls, etc available. It also looks cool. This is not noodling, this is a structured piece, not some 30 minute Phish solo.

  • Amazing I even got the oportunity to see him playing that song live.... thanx Michael for coming to such a small country like Guatemala.

  • holy crap...the man is a beast

  • ...wow.

I might be able to do half of what he's doing on one of those guitars. (One of the ones he's not wearing...)

  • The other guy should do something. Like pick up a saw and a hammer and build a stand to hold the third guitar, maybe.

  • Michael used to play this with the three basses on but apparently his doctor said no to that.

  • hahahaha, yeah good one

  • where's your jaco now, bitches!!

  • erm... actually, dis 1 is Jaco's student :-D

I also dink hes better but he'd B nobody without Jaco....

  • Simply amazing!!!

  • what a great moment of music...
