Manring is beyond all, ever. We all hear the names of other "popular" bassists thrown around, but you never hear the names of the true masters, Manring being that, and perhaps the greatest to ever strum the bass. Just like Michael Hedges, most never heard of him, but he's easily the greatest acoustic guitarist who ever lived...and wouldn't ya know it, Manring played with Hedges for years.

Fair enough... Technical mastery. But who here plays a "technical instrument?" This is elevator music for the latter end of the 21st century - it doesn't groove and seems a little lifeless if you listen to it on its own merits without watching the video too.
For the record, this is one performance with two different camera angles - you can clearly see everyone on-shot has the same clothes in both angles, and the second cameraman walks into shot at 40s in.
I saw M.M. in Chicago last year at The Bass Club.I asked him if he has ever played a Chapman Stick considering all the tapping he does.He said he has and that he SUCKED at it!!I was amazed!

nah...he doesn't blow wooten out of the water...wooten can do on one bass what it takes this guy to do on 3...plus wooten has just got better musical sensibilites
Are you sure?? I think that both of you didn't understand so much of this artist... He can't be in comparison with Wooten...great artist this last one too, but extremely different! Moreover wooten it's a monster of technique, but he'll never get better musical sensibility... 1st good musician rule: don't NEVER do comparison between famous musicians...it's ridiculous!
Well, I think this composition is great. I heard it before I knew he was playing on three basses...and it's just such a beautiful piece. Props to Michael!
Have you heard the studio version? It's a very coherent piece of music and can stand on its own. It's haunting, really. Especially when he does those half-step modulations in the melody with his headstock tuning keys. Love it!!
He is fantastic, but I had the fortune to see a double bill of Hedges with this guy and Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.
MAnring was great but Victor Wooten was better -at least that evening. It actually seemed like they were competing. Manring played 2 basses that night and then Wooten played 3. They all played together at the end for a couple encore songs.
Wooten and three basses? What song is that if I might ask?
I know Manring has used four basses when playing My Three Moons (sometimes he uses 3 or 4). He did so on Bass day.
If you dive more into their catalogues, you'll know that that Manring is much more of a heavy metal bassist while Wooten is more of a soul/funk bassist.
They're both monsters at technique. I've met Manring about a year ago. I'm looking forward to seeing Wooten.

Maybe it's because he's a bass player not a stick player. He's playing like a fingerstyle guitarist, hammering ringing harmonics and letting the strings vibrate and drone while moving to another instrument that may be playing a stacatto rhythm. Also, there are different pickups, tone controls, etc available. It also looks cool. This is not noodling, this is a structured piece, not some 30 minute Phish solo.
