The funny thing about this video is it shows why the punk movement was soooo important to the evolution of music. This is friggin' awful and I love Neil. Pretentious, sloppy, unprofessional wanking is what it is. Nash and Crosby can't hit the notes at the beginning and sound horrible. The "jam" is unfocused and meandering. Thank god Neil heard what the punks were saying and got his act together in the late 70's.
@billinhp Punk was fucking shit. The only reason this is bad is because they were all fucked on coke. Take a look at Almost Cut My Hair from this very same gig - it's fantastic.
This kinda sucked. You could tell Young and Stills were super tired of each other. Stills is definitely the better guitarist, at least technically. By looking at him, no one can deny he's also a big douche bag though. That's pretty much the nature of coke-heads. They love feeling better than everyone. Btw, Nash looks like he's tripping major balls.
This is unusual. I like the energy but it really sounds like Nash and all of them actually are having trouble singing here. It may be that the set up that day didn't allow them to hear themselves or each other very well..
Youtube the CSN +Y 10/4/73 show and you can see the same type of behavior from neil; and my comment. He just comes in and HIJACKS the show with 2 great songs from TTN. And if you listen closely, stills asks him for a verse on human highway, then neil sings over him. In Neils autobiography (mcDonough), he claims he never goaded stills, but you see otherwise here. He musta had alot of animosity towards Stills around this time.
i know this is art and this isn't a comment on the performance. BUT, anyone else notice the way shakey instigates stills around the 12:00 mark? Reminds me of me and my brothers picking on each other. THe look on Neils face is classic. And the way stills jumps around hitting "Rock Star" poses; COCAINE!! And what's with him hitting the drums?? I still love Stills and even Fat Crosby.
Still's and Young have always had a 'love - hate' relationship just like brothers. There probably never was two guitarists that created the magic that they have when they were 'on'. They just feed off of each other with such intensity it's surreal. This is 1974 and Neil is one of the few from this era who's still doing it today with the same intensity and relevance in 2012. He had his critics back in the day but time has proven him to be one of the most important figures music of his generation
Anybody who criticizes Neil's guitar playing abilities don't know what their talking about. I f you had seen him with Crazy Horse during this period maybe you would know. This was a 'jam' situation and he was waiting to feed off of Still's. They had plenty of magic moments together on stage. However, there has to be a 'groove' and it just didn't happen during this song. As far as Duane Almans comments, it seems like Neil can shred him to pieces these day's aye? I doubt if he ever said that.
The band were such a train wreck by this time. Frankly, the boards from this show would've sucked so band who would have even listen to them. From reading the interviews, I do know that still hated this tour. Nash hated it. Young hated it. Crosby needed a pay check.
Boy, I gotta say that this really sucks! However, given he technology at the time I'm sure that it was no friend of the band. Hopefully the monitors were not working and that's why this is so bad.
As usual, when Neil Young steps up to the plate, things really start to cook!! Fucking genius musician, every note wrenched out of that old black Les paul is golden...
@cottageorgan You gotta be kidding...Neil Young anno 1974 sounds like a kid having problems hitting just one string when trying to play a solo...rubbish playing. Stills was always the better guitarplayer both in Buffalo Springfield and C/S/N&Y! But he obviously ruined himself on drugs and drink!
@MB280E Ah well, each to their own. I agree, Stills was, and probably still is a great musician and singer who never really got the dues he deserved, I just prefer Neil's playing and songwriting, that's all. Different strokes etc...PS. I'm a huge Stills fan.
Too many guitars, someone turn Graham Nash's mic down please he's way off, apart from that it's quite a glorious mess, at times a bit lost but when it comes together it's quite a holy racket...oh no here comes Graham again, ouchh!!
holy, high on cocaine. Crosby looks like a stoned out wizard of oz lion. Stills, gacked, police shirt, walks away from the wah-wah pedal.....and takes over on percussion. nice. Nash grabs a drum stick. it's chaos. THEN NASH GRABS THE COWBELL.
I had only watched this once quick and saw Stills do something cool (2:40 I think) and took a pop shot at Young who was never a great lead player.(Duane Allman once quoted, "that dude should stick to playing rhthym". ) I had only seen his lead at 3:05 which was weak. Later at 6:40 he gets better with a Santana type lead. Not the scale he uses but the style minus any flamenco stuff. In the end it wasnt their best but getting lost in a jam with your friends is the best feeling on earth!
The guys were having fun, something that doesn't come easy in the music industry. Give me the heaven of Young and Stills crazy jammin over the perfection of a studio recording any day.
And as far as that goes, everyone of our generation was gettin f**cked up one way or another in 1974. CSNY was at the forefront of a lot of extremities. Slack cut.
For harmony it only takes one vocalist to throw the whole thing off.... Crosby sounds like he's shouting instead of singing. Stills is great on the guitar, Big Daddy is jumping and jamming and has those long legs goin and loving it and I'm always lovin watchin him and his energy. We've all heard them better but even less than their best is pretty outrageous. Thanks for the post!
@kathleenb1947 do you have a clue of what a PA could sound like those days? You definitely couldn't play loud and sing high pitched harmonies in tune (it's a miracle they kept their voices until now). anyway those guys never were great electric musicians... Seeing them playing acoustic for the whole show in 93 was Heaven on Earth!!!!
@swingmanu Great input.... thanks! Wouldn't have a clue about PA systems in those days or these. Excellent point! They were a movement, weren't they? The politics, the energy, the talent. My generation was blessed with so much musical genius! Glad you got to see them in a reunion effort and experience greatness in person.... a little peace of Heaven! Just listen to those guitars whine! Lovin it!
Appalling Wembley performance ..This is what Cocaine chopped with Borax does to a performance...Why NOT to take Band Chemicals! These guys all had nose bleeds before going onstage. Can you blame Young for walking out of tours with Stills in it?
