So can anyone explain this? I know the Coast Guards helicopters are a different variation from the military Black Hawks (Not exactly the same version obviously), but why did they tilt the tail downwards slightly? Black hawks are completely straight tails, and here the Coast Guards version is tilted down slightly, anyone know the reasoning behind that?
That's a horizontal stabilizer. Most helicopters have one including all variants of the Black Hawk. During high speed flight the trailing edge deflects up slightly causing the tail to pull down slightly to help keep the helicopter level. During low speed flight the trailing edge deflects down to push the nose down giving the pilots a better view.
Yes the aircraft carrier in the background is impressive. If this is San Diego as you say, then the Coast Guard base is part of the Naval Base's whole complex. The Coast Guard has responsibility for the protection of the water area surrounding the Naval Base as well as the whole of the bay area. I am duly impressed by the landing of the HH-60 Jayhawk.
@journeyer58 The Coast Guard has their own air station there. If you want to know where it's at it is at: 2710 North Harbor Drive, San Diego, CA. I drove past there once and it looked awesome, the runway and helipad is literally right there separated from the road only by a fence.
Yea, gotta love someone who doesn't have a shitty camera/shitty camera skills. And it was a pretty sweet landing. It was just about perfect conditions, but you can't ask for anything better than that. Overall, sweet vid.
is this the place in san diego?
