i was introduced to work experience in the summer of 88 with a tool who just took advantage of people..but anyway loved ths song then and now and i,m from the "clover" country
i don't know why this song came into my head today. i am 25 years old, and i vividly remember hoisting myself up by the sides of my crib when i was a toddler to walk backwards and forwards trying to emulate this video when i should have been napping.
@GenericTurtle this segment was from friday night videos, a show which predated MTV and remaind on the air through most of the 80's, anyway, they usually had celebrity guest come in to announce the videos and danny was one of them.
@rocketmann82...what a comment...that has so much meaning both for the music and the way the world is today...almost got a little choked up...watching this and wondering where the world went wrong. I'll take the 80's any day.
This footage is from an episode of NBC's Friday Night Videos that DeVito and Michael Douglas co-hosted. Didn't weed through 250 comments, but if nobody's said that, there's your answer for those wondering why DeVito is seen at the beginning.
@DrPlotless I saw that also, DrPlotless, and I was like WTF, "Danny Devito"? What, was he like their roag manager or something? Someone answer Dr and I. What was Danny Devito doing in and at the beginning of this video? or why rather was in and at the beginning of it? I don't remember him in it from back in the day.
great feel good song! his music always takes me back to being a teenager, and when music was something to get excited over! the 70's and 80's... best damn music produced. just close your eyes and it's 1985! oh, man, if it were only that easy!
@Likeadiamondsnake I sent a message to 1985, once. I hope that it listens. I told it to send all it's sexy men and amazing music to the year 2011, or else I was gonna go find a Delorean and go kick it's ass. I'm thinking we can negotiate something. Still hoping to hear from it.
@rocketmann82 You know it, rocketmann! Couldn't have said it better myself. The 80's were a phenominal time, weren't they? I'm an 80's child through and through-and proud of it! A great time to be around. You definitely get a thumbs up from me, bro!
Amen rocketman! The '80's were a perfect time! Perfect music. Perfect movies. Perfect president. Now things are just plain screwed up. Things may never be as good.
I've never owned a Huey album but I have to give him huge credz for being such a pro and a great performer!! This song he so nailed... his best but least played on the charts. Yeah..... watchin and listing to this just make you feel good! Thanx Huey.. hahahha .... dodging flying news paper garbage.... slayin me!!!
stage = 80s music, garbage heap = majority of music afterwards... It may have not been perfect, but I thought the 80s came about as close to the "perfect world" sci-fi utopian visions of the early 20th century before dystopia and hyper-cynicism kicked in. At least at home in America - the Cold War damaged a lot of countries abroad.
loved them in the 80's and still do. My first gig was their Small World Tour and Huey touched my hand!!!!! Still remeber it to this day and its over 20yrs ago!
...and I miss the world where all the sports, movie and music celebs everybody liked didn't look and act like trailer-trash that had been in jail a gazillion times. What a sad world we live in these days :(
Hahahaha! Takes me back - my best friend's 10th birthday party. We all made music videos of our favorite songs, and this was mine. We lip synced and did the whole 'forward and back' to the mikes, and someone was off camera with a fan blowing newspapers at us. We actually practiced the routine for days leading up to the party. :-) So much fun! I love this band, still.
This was one of my favorite albums because it was different and musically it was a stretch from the stuff we heard from the past. the horns were terrific and the songs were upbeat it had a different kind of energy to it. Soulsville is an album that really is a stretch for the band however its the stuff THEY like so keep on rockin Huey your still #1 in my book.
I consider myself one of the biggest HLN fans of all time. I love them! I think this album was just a shift in direction no one saw coming. I actually like a lot of it, but it was definitely a departure from what put them on top. I'm not sure people knew what to do with this.
Yeah, I agree. The Stan Getz track is really pretty cool. I also liked "Gimme' the Keys."
@JoeNJ2 Thanks! I didn't know the drummers name.I like his style alot! Huey Lewis said in an interview once that his band were not great musicians, like jazz musicians but good players and I agree! This band was tight with good chops!
This was a great cd that showd their appreciation of jazz and its a shanme that it didnt get more play - Bobo Tempo is a great song - Slammin great jam - as a lifelong fan of HLN this may be my favorite because it was them playing what they wanted to play
@uschockey1 Haha! It's funny that you refer to it as a CD - I actually never owned it on anything other than a cassette. I loved Bobo Tempo too, and it's been years since I've heard it - but I remember it well. Funny what sticks in your subconscious!
This great song came off their 1988 album Small World. Not one of their hit albums but there are several good songs on it just not main stream enough for their time.
Darn it!! I can barely contain the need to get up off my chair and dance to this song!! darn it darn it darn it!! (I can't you see cause I am currently in a public place so it would be extremely awkward to just get up and start dancing. But I am seriously having a problem sitting still). AAARRRGGGHHHHH!! I want to dance SO bad!!!
HUEY LEWIS & THE NEWS and Perfect World; they did good. This is Christ prophecy, he who humbles himself will be exalted, and he who exalts himself will be humbled: People do this to each other all the time, also do it to themselves as our perception changes; you claim heaven and they find hell, you find hell and they will point out heaven. Good music video.
Back in the 80's I was at this party...........I played Huey Lewis in my car stereo with the door open........it was out in the country around 40 miles from home......we all danced around the fire, drank and had such a great time...........went to start the car to go home the next morning it was dead.........thanks Huey for all the memories :)
This is a very good album of theirs. A very good follow-up. They did it their way - kudos to HLATN. I miss them today but we still have the music and memories...
I agree with people saying this is an underappreciated awesome song from Huey (I remember it in 1988 or 89 too). I bet it's just overlooked because the album it came from isn't that good.
IMO it's the one song that sounds like his popular stuff. It could've been on Fore.
Yeah, I actually just rewatched his Behind the Music and forgot about that. He said they wanted to be more experimental with jazz since they'd already done two big pop albums. I guess this song only became big since it sounds like their '82-87 hits.
I kinda take back what I said about no other good songs too. "Old Antones" and "walking with the kid" are pretty good.
@JPMcFly1985 Fall 1988 was when it was released as a 45 rpm and was a pretty big hit (I was 25 years old at the time that's how I remember that so well). And I still have the 45 rpm single, I do believe, of this tune (have to check to make sure). Agreed, it was underappreciated. The main problem for Huey Lewis & The News around that time was that there were other artists overshadowing them, more than the problems with the lp.
@TheWhatsinaname Yeah that's true, I think the core 80s music lasted from about 1982 to 87. Cheesy tweenpop like Debbie Gibson and New Kids were starting then. I never liked it (except for a couple Rick Astley songs) even though I was 6 lol.
@JPMcFly1985 You're right. By 1988, I had just about entirely switched from the top 40 music scene, and gotten into '50s and '60s music. Hated that New Kids type music. Now, the music from '82 to '87 is THE BEST!!!! CLASSIC!!!
@snoops71 Yeah, I think it got better and more diverse again in 1991, but I'm also so glad the corny as hell hip hop and teenybopper stuff in '89 and 90 died out. Even as a kid I preferred more melodic pop or rock like this.
My ex gf was a huge NKOTB fan at that time, so I try not to rip on it too much lol, but we disagreed on that!
@JPMcFly1985 I know what you mean. My sister was, and still is, a fan of NKOTB, too. We had a playful disagreement about it the other nite, so I don't get down on them as hard as I normally would, out of respect for her :)
This is true, I wore out the sports album, with my personal favorite being...walking on a thin line (very powerful song) but really liked every song, and then came the wait for more fantastic stuff from them. This was a very refreshing song when it came out, and Jacobs ladder was a good one as well, but the Sports album was hard to beat.
@inspyrdbychet Cool, yeah I agree I think Sports had more of the energy of the early MTV era (like you said with "Walking On a Thin Line" being edgier and serious) and it was harder rocking too. Fore is really good, but it's more laid back I guess.
Believe it or not, this was HLN's last Top 10 hit...topped out at #3 in September 1988. Unfortunately, music changed not long after that...and not for the better.
@beavisify it's comin back...that's what! ..lol ;) music sadly is a cycle ..where society compels itself to change just for the sake of changing..but I think if it ain't broke... don't break it.. and FORTUNATELY thank goodness for the crap,. because now after everyone getting tired of the crap nowadays.. people will begin to finally revert back to the great amazing music you see here.... and thus.. IT'S COMIN BACK!!! thank heavens.... and Huey! :)
I remember the whole era of this band, this was the best music and certainly one of the most popular and sucessful bands of the 80's scene...if you didn't like them then you didn't know great music from the best decade ever....PERIOD!!!!!

JPMcFly1985 1 year ago
@JPMcFly1985 I know what you mean. My sister was, and still is, a fan of NKOTB, too. We had a playful disagreement about it the other nite, so I don't get down on them as hard as I normally would, out of respect for her :)

@JPMcFly1985 I don't agree "Small World" is not a good album. Just remember also Stan Getz played there... ;)

Good music is still around, even some of the modern top 40, but yeah the good ol' days of rock and roll still beats most of the pop crap these days.
