  • i watched the whole video thinking it was for windows

  • Xwinwrap is awesome.

Note: Your desktop icons will disappear. Use keyboard shortcuts with Gnome shell.

Compiz can do something like this INSIDE the cube. You get your icons back but it is very cluttered looking..

  • PPlese get me a new downloadlink

  • lol

  • Can you put icons on that? Cool? Uncool?

  • will it work with crunchbang?

  • Thanks, It works! And now im enjoying linux even more!!!! :)

  • Thx i have an video file as my wallpaper in Windows and im gonna switch back to Ubuntu and then im gonna put this. =)

  • android ؟؟؟؟؟

  • Anyone managed to get this to startup automatically? I can get the a-desk to run at system start but have to manually select a video.. any help will be much appreciated.. :)

  • I wrote a new frontend for xwinwrap. It's called VDesk - Visual Desktop. I put up a video for it here on youtube too. You will find that it is much easier to use and allows you much more control.

  • Is there a way for the background to be started up as default?

  • @dan1981football havent use this in a while, but think u can add it to the startup programs, in ur menus

  • @gotbletu Cant seem to figure it out :(

  • HOLY SHIT! How to uninstall Winodws?

  • @kurrator2

    windows is sucks

  • pure awesomness

  • what browser is that

  • @thecoleseven chromium

  • Comment removed

  • @trickstarsym can u watch it on a movie player?

  • It worked the first time! That is awesom!

I did download some dremscenes to enjoy it!

But then I reallized that it hides my desktop icons.... this is a problem.. is there a solution?

  • Hello,

Do you know if this works in kubuntu 10.10?

    Kde 4.6

    x86_64

    Great post !

    Thanks

  • @fabricioguzzo it should work, nothings really changed

  • I can not get this to work it's is driving me crazy...the only background that works is the default background..?

  • @miasmablk maybe u need to install ubuntu-restricted-extras? since some videos are in wmv

  • @gotbletu yeah i tried that but it doesn't wan't to seem to work...the default video that it comes with is in .wmv format anyways so i don't think that is the problem..

  • @miasmablk maybe is because you got spaces in the path, which will cause it not to work, i wrote a note on the infobox, guess u havent read it.

  • @gotbletu no spaces maybe just a hardware compatibility issue? DELL 1545 64 bit architechture...

  • @miasmablk not sure then, only thing i can think of is spaces, maybe try to put it in the same folder as the video of the working one u got running

  • @gotbletu i got it working i just used gedit to replace the path from the default folder to the new one..

  • Awsome it's work :D THX !!!

  • FABLE 2!!!

  • wow luv the wallpaper

  • Can this program put a separate video for each different workspace?

  • Hey man, I install this and i can't see my icons? why? every time i use it, i can see my icons on the desktop.

  • thanks alot.

  • thanks for the links

  • Very Very Nice, Thanks!

Only problem I have is I got a laptop with a monitor connected and it runs on the monitor instead of the laptop screen :(

  • why do my icons hide?

  • Thank you so much! I was looking for a freakin long time on how to do this. You know how you can change the log in screen? Well, can you change the login screen to a video wallpaper like this? If so, how?

  • nota that a-desk is no longer available as a free download, but as a cheap $1 download.

  • @kolyawe I guess ill upload the free version i got then Thanks

  • @kolyawe Link is up now if u need to download it

  • Just didn't work for me. I had all but Zenity already installed as well and followed directions to a "T" but it wouldn't work.

  • is ur name galo?

  • It works thanks.. nice video btw (:

  • how would you do this in kde?

  • @myusername1492 just double click on the adesk script located in the /home/username/.gnome2/nautilus-scripts

  • Really nice but somehow once i go to the desktop, using the Show_desktop script, it goes back to my normal standard wallpaper? How can i avoid that?

I bind the show desktop script in compiz with the upper left corner.

    thank you

  • @gotbletu

I did everything is should, but I do have a problem. Not every video will play, for example your fairytale dream. It won't show it. It just says it has loaded it.

Do you know what I did wrong?

    ~RockFr3ak

  • @RockFr3ak make sure theres no spaces in the path or filename

  • @gotbletu

That work thanks, pretty odd tho

  • cool!!, now my desktop is far more greater than my brother's mac.

  • Well i did them all but i have no icons anymore on the DC anyidea why?

ps:great job for all videos ty..

  • wow awesome

  • man, this isn't what i thought it would be...

i thought it would change the actual background from a pic to a vid. but it's just a video running on top of the background..

i can't eve see my desktop items when the vid is running. :(

oh well... i'm still using it b/c it's still kinda hot... thanks..

  • @elnegrobembon

hmm i dont clutter the desktop like i used to, so i guess this would be ok for me

still in some other vids i see icons like in this one: watch?v=K0DqHUhlmnA

maybe there's options we dont know about..

still this thing is really cool :)

  • dam... you make linux looks so cool, but when i try to do something more i always mess up everything...

  • I did try this a few months ago on that Dell Latitude and surprisingly it worked pretty smooth (I don't know how, but it did lol) and I took the script that was running the mplayer and xwinwrap and created my own shell script version of this and I made it autostart so I wouldn't have to right click to start this. So my crappy laptop was pretty badas$ with ZombieLand (the movie) as the background when I would turned it on. Time to nut up or shut up lol

  • Interesting, thanks.

  • Hey i got a problem I installed it and it worked but when I apply the video theme there are thick blue borders on the edge of windows and both my panels how do I fix this? thanks

  • Well done dude - nice video.

  • nice one geez,love it...nuff said.

  • i have 2 displays and it works only at right(not primary) how to fix it?

  • Nice. I can imagine it would be best to have a 512 video card to offload these animations onto. I can't say your machine won't be throttling big time if you don't. Especially if you use a memory hog like Firefox as your browser. Nice video anyway.

  • this is rly nice

  • I wonder if it is KDE compatible

  • @librano yea it works on KDE

  • I wonder is Ubuntu the only OS that does this and also what are the required specs your computer must have?

  • @AndroidAdvocate I've done it on XP, Vista, and Win 7, and i'm sure i've seen videos of it in kubuntu and fedora.

  • @DudeOverdosed thanks I'm going to find out how to do it . but I do wonder how strong your CPU would need to be?

  • @AndroidAdvocate my laptop is pretty shitty and it ran the program pretty smoothly. i've got a dell inspiron e1405, 32bit, 2gb of ram and 120 gb hard drive. dual boot ubuntu and win 7. so if you have anything better than this is gonna run perfectly.

  • @DudeOverdosed ok thanks

  • @DudeOverdosed that's alot better than what I had to use for a year and a half. I had a Dell Latitude c640 with a 40g HDD and Ati Radion 7500 (yeah right on using all of compiz plugins, not happening lol) 1g memory and a Pentium 4m (very sad) and running 9.10. I think my Ubuntu was depressed running on that piece of crap :(

  • @america0014 lol i agree, that's pretty bad. but my laptop is like 4 years old and it's still running perfectly. the 120GB hard drive that it had wasn't the one that it originally came with. i changed the 40GB to the 120 GB last year. also, no offense but seriously? Pentium 4m?? wow! that's super old XD

  • @DudeOverdosed Well it was 9 years old lol and it ran 9.10 pretty well. Dell made that thing almost indestructible...untill the screen cracked last week. They just don't make things like they used to :P

  • @AndroidAdvocate all it is a shell script that runs these videos through Xwinwrap as the layer and Mplayer as the player with the arguments of no sound and loop -0 and enables the right click option. So I think all the distros can do this and the name "Dreamscenes" is for Wind*ws. What about Mac anyone? Not that I care about Apple anyhoo...I'm just curious what they have. I just really feel that Wind*ws and Apple are having a hard time keeping up with Linux nowadays!

  • @AndroidAdvocate ...maybe that's why Apple and Microsoft make it a kick in the face to run Apple Ipods or play Wind*ws games on a Linux machine. Yes to everyone, I know you can do these things already on Linux but not flawlessly on everything. But one day we will :)

  • coooooool

  • what about CPU?

  • @GrafTrahula It varies

I have seen be as Little as 5% or kill the system just depends

  • wonderfull! i like! =) thanks gotbletu
