@livethechaos13 i have had many injuries in my life as an athlete but shin splints has been the worse not because it is painful but because it is a very annoying and irritating to keep a consistent training routine.
@hspannu777 go to a physical therapist! i used to go to pt for this and a good home treatmwnt is to freeze water in a paper cup then rip the paper off and use that to massage your leg
@Try2bSunny You're right.....it's not necessarily enjoyable (i.e. it does hurt), but I use it often with my patients and it helps. In the end - getting you well is the goal. :-) The therapist can gauge how deep they go based on your tolerance. No bruising or contusions if dosage is appropriate.
Thanks so so much for posting! My shin on my right side has been killing me since i had a left ankle injury and continued to play basketball. Favoring my left leg and putting far to much strain on the right foot, leg and ankle including jumping and landing on that leg alone.
Is this what could of caused my problem? Because i also changed my shoes after my ankle injury (superstitious) lol.
I understand if you dont have the time to reply but thanks again for the video! :D
This is much to rough for both the patient and practitioner... The muscles need to be warmed up first and the practitioner is using horrible body mechanics ( bent fingers and thumbs). That much oil should only be used on people with a lot of hair (not a women that shaves her legs) you get no grip into the muscle. Going up the leg is very painful and hurts (that is how you bruise people)! If you go down the leg it is much more comfortable for everyone, but still beneficial.
In Agreeance with sports, Great Video as a strength and conditioning coach spec. in Athlete support (massage).
My only problem as half a fault was it appeared the masseuse went right up to the back of the popliteal fossa, rather then pulling up short.
Congrats on a good video- unlike others you don't mention the worst case scenarios, getting watchers worried about fractures and surgery as in 95% of cases this is not going to happen.
Cheers- I will be recommending this for home exercises.
Bent thumbs are consistently the recommended technique. That's the only way I can do these techniques every day on my patients and spare my thumbs. Massage 101 - always go toward the heart. Read up on why going distal can be potentially damaging to the veins of the legs. The amount of oil would depend on which techniques your using............using more doesn't always mean you lose effectiveness of tissue response.
@MrBishopthorpe You should never stroke away from the heart - thats massage 101. I quite like this video and it definitely helped me a ton with my final on shin splints in muscle therapy :)
Even though I'm a moderate overpronater I changed from a high stability shoe to a neutral shoe. Within two weeks of doing this my chronic anterior shin splints completely resolved. My advice to anyone with persistent shin splints is to try a different shoe if nothing else is working.
im training in thai boxing .. and these shin splints are reallly getting in my way

Hi. I'm afraid we disagree with you on every point.
The video does not show an entire shin/calf massage, much of the warming-up (effleurage/petrissage etc) is not included.
Bent thumbs are always recommended when using stripping and trigger pointing techniques to ease the pressure on the joints.
You can't possibly see how much oil is used in the video due to glare and reflection.
Applying pressure down (away from the heart) is never recommended as it may cause damage to veins.

I find this video very helpful.
Shouldn't you start with massaging the calf muscles from the back of the leg ?
And after that turn to the front of the leg (the shin)

@MrBishopthorpe I also don't understand how you could possibly do effluerage without bending your thumbs.

What about shaving? I've got hairs on my legs too and they're always getting in the way.
bordshat 1 year ago
There should be no need to shave. Hairier legs do require more oil but it should be possible to massage on even the hariest legs!

They should use more lotion\oil in that case.

Use more oil then! Massage should be possible, even on the most hairy of legs!

Do these techniques help break down scar tissue too?
