  • Nice!!!!

  • I enjoyed this so much! After reading Patrick Rothfuss' The Name of the Wind, I had to find out what Kvothe's instrument sounded like. The lute is so beautiful! Thank you for posting !

  • @Clairemccast

Thanks a lot. I don't know this book, I have to find if it is published in french... All the best

    Val

  • @Clairemccast Same here! hahaha

  • Magic

  • @2000flute

    Thank you very much ;-)

  • I play this on the guitar, but the lute sound so otherworldly. Thank you sir.

  • @zengi7

    Thank yo very much.

    Best regards

    Val

  • You're playing is absolutely perfect. listening to some of it while I eat my evening meal makes me almost forget I'm in this god awful century, for that I thank you.

  • @wilsond882

No my playing is not perfect (but is perfection in this world ?) Anyway I'm glad you like it !

    All the best

    Val

  • I have played this on the 8-string classical guitar. It sounds better on the lute! I appreciate you sharing so much music.

    James Caudill

  • @GuitarBrethren

Thank you very much James ;-)

    Best regards !

    Val

  • bravo Val!! i am temted to try it on the baroque harp! in wich key is yours?

  • @Gealach74

Here it is in Cm... ;-)

  • I bet that is TONS of fun to tune.

  • @512Airsoft

Just need an electronic tuner ;-)

  • damn that's a lot of strings

  • @bulldog01209

    Just 24... ;-)

  • @Luthval "just" hihihihi....very amazing perforamnce !!!!!

  • i swear you should join a band. you could be the best guitarist in a long time.

  • @dontbannme

A baroque band ? Baroque and roll ?

    ;-)

    Val

    (thanks a lot)

  • @Luthval

    Europa Galante XD...

  • Thank you I enjoyed that.

  • @j1mmusj4mmus

    Thanks a lot ;-)

    Val

  • i love how you slowed the tempo down, makes the song much more expressive

  • @Marchofdapigz

As said before, there is no indicated tempo, so we can play as we like (and not fast as a run...) Yes it is much expressive slower, also my opinion.

    Thanks

    Best regards

    Val

  • Insane baroque'n'roll Dude - keep shredding in the free world!

  • @key2kingdom

    lol

  • No bad, but really slow tempo. The lute is also tuned like a guitar (isn't that cheating?) If you like the lute, you should listen to recordings by Walter Gerwig (1900-1966). Some of his recordings are available on Amazon.Com, etc. He was astounding!

  • @bangwhistle69

Are you joking ? This lute is tune in Dm, like a baroque lute should be tuned, of course. And there is no tempo indication on this piece, so who said it should be played fast.

    ... LOL

    !

  • @Luthval I think you picked a perfect tempo!

  • @CanadianLute

    Thanks a lot ;-)

  • Well, its pretty good. Must point out that the tempo is a bit too slow, also the lute featured here is tuned like a guitar (at least on the first 6 strings! NAUGHTY!

The BEST recording of this is by Walter Gerwig (1900-1966). It is available on Amazon.com and is called, "Bach, Lute Music--Walter Gerwig, Lute. Gerwig was the greatest lute player of the 20th century. Those who love the lute should check it out. You will be hypnotized and astonished, I promise!

    @bangwhistle69

I know very well Walter Gerwig, and he was playing Bach on a renaissance tuned lute... (but I love his recordings and it is the reason why I'm playing lute, because I was listening to him when I was young.)

  • Merci beaucoup ;-)

    Val

  • very good!

  • Thanks ;-)

    Val

  • I am in love with that instrument. Makes my mandolin look like a child's toy. I agree with the slower pace. Playing Bach fast merely undermines the beauty of this wonderful music.

Do you play any of John Dowland's compositions?

  • About Dowland, look at my channel, I have a playlist with a few Dowland's pieces.

    Thanks for the comment.

    Best regards

    Val

    Val

  • I really like your touch monsieur! Best regards from Istanbul.

  • Thank you very much

    Best regards

    Val

  • Amazing!

    Great performance!

  • Thanks a lot ;-)

    Val

  • Bingo !!! I finaly found the perfect rendition of this piece...now I can go to sleep...

Best wishes Val, i beg you to continue your work...don't you dare stop...

    Kind regards,

    K

  • Maybe the perfect one is on the cello ;-) (and mine is far from perfect, but thanks anyway !)

    Best regards

    Val

  • Wonderful! I agree, a slower tempo is best!

  • Thanks a lot ;-)

    Val

  • this is a really bootiful sound :)

  • Thanks

    V.

  • Now that was really sweet!

  • Thanks you ;-)

    Val

  • What a lovely sounding instrument; slightly more mellow than your other lute (the one made by Stephen Murphy). And very sensitive playing as always; you really are an asset to Youtube, the internet and indeed the global music community!

  • Yes different instruments, more fondamentals on this one, more harmonics on the lute by Stephen, both are interesting.

    Thanks for the comment.

    Regards,

    Val

  • nice sound I like your video!

  • Thanks a lot ;-)

    Val

  • Grazie

    My pleasure to share...

    Val

  • the cello suites .. are the most important to me.. like a prayer...

    it is such healing music

the suites could be played at harp.. maybe.

I enjoy the suites on lute tremendously!

    anne

  • bach is the ultimate composer to me.. so profound and beautiful .. thnx for sharing! grtz anne

  • I agree, Bach is above all... and I love more than everything the cello suites, and as I don't play cello... but nice on the lute too.

    Thanks !

    Val

Trois fois bravo M. Sauvage !

    Cordiales salutations,

    Val

  • Great interpretation and playing.

Is it possible to get your transcription somewhere?

    Best Regards

  • See Tree Edition for the transcriptions by Gusta Goldschmidt.

    ;-)

    Val

  • you are a professional at the lute. beautiful music my friend. could you message me back for a request song?

  • I'm not a pro, I'm afraid... but if you want me to play something, if I can... tell.

    Salutations

    Valéry

  • This is amazing, I have never heard this song on a lute before. I must say beautiful.

  • Thanks a lot

    Regards

    Val

  • einfach geil....

  • Danke ;-)

    V.

  • One of my favorite cello numbers of all time, and now one of my favorite lute pieces! Great job!

  • Thanks a lot. I love the cello suites too.

    V.

  • bello

  • Thanks ;-)

    V.

  • Lovely. I Really like the sound of your instrument. As for all these tempo arguments- the piece sounds amazing fast, slow, medium, medium.3, medium.4 medium.5, fast -1 fast -2 etc. Provided the notes all ring and connect together in some way, slow is fine, as here it is. Fast is also lovely, provided beautiful moments are given a little something special. Fast leaves me more excited after the chromatic clime; slow overall leaves me more serene and calm.

  • Thanks for this interesting analysis. I always prefer slow tempo for this one. Fast I feel we just hear the arpeggio but less the melodic line. Here I tried to make listen more the melody.

    All the best,

    Val

  • Well Put.

  • Im learning this peice on the guitar. looks alot harder on the baroque lute.

    5 stars! very good

  • Have fun playing it. Lovely music indeed !

    Val

  • really congratulations for your skill and thanks for the awesome piece!!!

  • Thanks a lot ;-)

    Val

  • you really have a lovely collection of music posted. thanks for your hard work!

  • Thanks a lot for visiting ;-)

It is my pleasure to share the music I love...

    Regards,

    Val

  • are lutes hard to play ??????

  • This one (baroque lute) is the hardest of the lute family... Renaissance lute is closer to the guitar, except the right hand different because of double strings. It is also more difficult to tune (wooden pegs and the number of strings...) But as everything, with some work it is possible... ;-)

    Best regards

    Val

  • Very nice , I love the sound of the lute almost as much as the classical guitar . Thank you !

  • Thanks a lot ;-)

    Best regards

    val

  • What a lovely tone that lute has!! It gives the piece an entirely different personality than the guitar. Thank you for a delightful, almost contemplative rendition.

  • Thanks a lot, I feel this one is nice in a slow mood too (too fas you only came with the arpegios, but loose melody)

    Val

  • Beautiful!

  • Thanks,

    Val

  • Love this piece, does sound better alittle faster.

  • For once I don't agree, sound not so good faster, you think so because guitarist used to hurry on this one (and some cellist too) but I think poetry in this music is better not too fast... LOL

    Val

  • Beautiful! Thoroughly enjoyed this, and it gives me some ideas for how to play this on Classical Guitar. It truly is a fave of mine. :)

  • Thanks for the comment ;-)

    Val

  • incredile. How much i love the sound of the lute!

  • Thanks ;-)

    V.

  • just wonderful piece

  • Thanks ;-)

    Val

  • I play this on CG, it's a favorite of mine. I've tried some Bach on my BL but it's very tricky so I'm just concentrating on the easier stuff for now (if there is such a thing on BL). 5 stars.

  • Hello ;-)

There are easy pieces for baroque lute in Leipzig MS (see Tree Edition on the net...) and also some editions by the French lute society with nice pieces to start with. (I'm preparing a Dm suite from the Leipzig, after the Bach suite)

    Regards

    Val

  • I'm in awe of how Bach he ties this piece together in the end with that suspenseful conclusion. I'm not a musician myself, how would one describe what he does there at the end?

  • He does lots of things at the end - but I think your talking about pedal points - where the bass note stays the same and the chords change over it, building tension; and an ascending chromatic scale over a pedal note - where the notes climb and climb up to the glorious conclusion. Hope this answers your crazy question!

  • Always nice to listen to some Bach. Thanks Val!

  • Hello Jo, hope you're doing well !

    Bises,

    Val

  • Very well played - love the sound you produce on your lute - will be BACH in 10 minutes to have another listen !.

  • Ok, (I'll tell thanks you when you'll be back)

    ;-)

    Regards

    Val

  • Very expressive interpretation..

    Guitar version coming up.. :-)

    Phil

  • Waiting for your version Phil ;-)

    Friendly,

    Val

  • As always, beautifully played! Thanks for sharing this!

  • Thanks to you for listening. My pleasure to share ;-)

    Val

    V.

  • great job Val !

  • Thanks ;-)

    V.

  • Bravo Val. Oh well. Another piece I have to learn :) However it sounds great on the Lute. Thanks for playing it so well! :)

  • Hello Wilfried, all time fav for many people hé ?

    All the best

    Val

  • Val,

... and here it is: the Prelude! I LOVE it on the lute. Sounds o much more "bach" than when I play it! WOW! Very enjoyable!!

    Merci!!

    Per-Olov

  • Thanks a lot Per-Olov.

I don't know if it sounds "more" Bach... anyway it is a cello piece, but fits well the lute and the guitar too. (and listening to your version in Roma gave me envy to play it too. so it's done now)

    Best regards

    Val ;-)

  • Well done,Val. This is a beautiful prelude.

    Regards Trond

  • Thanks Trond, now next is Sarabande... (I've done half the way for the all suite)

    Val

  • Je t'Adore, mais ca tu le sait.

  • Salut Pascal ;-)

    V.

  • C'est diabolique, cher FAUST musical ; épelons : F.A.U.T. , comme ton Méphisto fait l'S (Méphistophélès...). Superbe ! "Bach a destiné deux suites fort jolies à un instrument en voie de disparition de son vivant, mais dont il a su tirer d'admirables effets : LE LUTH." Carl de Nys

    Grand merci, Mr Val !

  • ;-)

    Amitiés

    Roger

    V.

  • i notice you have an unusual right hand techniquie where your thumb sits behind your fingers. is this a personal preference or is this the standard hand position for lute players?

  • Well noticed, lute technic is different than modern classical guitar, and my technic is more a renaissance technique than a baroque one, but seems to work not so bad.

    Regards

    Val

  • Bonjour Val ,

    j'ai adoré ! trés bonne idée !!

    "nobody's perfect !" mais c'est difficile :)

    Amicalement ! Guillaume .

  • Merci Guillaume,

    Val

  • Hello Val

    Amicalement

    Val
