Sakari Topelius wrote this poem. It's thought he was thinking of a migratory bird, blackcap (sylvia atricapilla) that misses his home country, while it winters somewhere in Italy (all the rich artists in Finland used to go to Italy for winter back in 1800s). It's funny that Topelius had never been in a foreign country, though. A guy called Collaan did the composition in 1855.
