nice video. I have just one question that you might be able to help with... It tells me that the desktop effects could not be enable, and I have a GeForce 8200 card, I know it supports desktop effects, but after i updated Ubuntu, It won't let me enable it anymore...Do you know why this is?
i just got a new gaming rig. i have NO operating system for it. i need wndows 7 for it to use all its power i think :P but i really don't want to go out and buy it. can i use Ubuntu for gaming ?
its cool that you showed the update manager first, how do i use it if i dont have internet connection, you should really show the internet setup first!!
i have a problem of the system not being able to reallocate the folder to which to download... what should i do? i cant update because it apparently said that I dont have enough space in "/"
Great vid! but I cannot install ubuntu-restricted-extras, there is a pop up box that says it conflicts with other installed software, the other software must be removed first. I have no idea what it could be, I just installed ubuntu today, dual booting on a mac
Contact your internet service provider which should supply you with a router. They will give you the settings for the router or they may even be built into the router as standard. I'm not sure how you'd be able to cope with an ordinary dial up connection as I think there are driver issues with those sort of 56k modems. With a router its plain sailing.
i forgot to say that my ubuntu is free.. i dont know if it matters to those that not are free.. i mean the installer that have to be bought.. sorry for my bad grammar..
The repositories are basically just areas where you can get software from, usually found on the Ubuntu servers which are protected. If you have a look under system, administration and software sources you can see several links to some repositories in Ubuntu eg. Main, restricted, universe and multiverse. Some software eg. google earth and some codecs are not free in fact some codecs are subject to legal issues in some countries. You can still download them though.
However my mouse freezes with in a few minutes of using Ubuntu. Ubuntu is still running correctly, I just can't move my mouse at all unless I reboot and then it will freeze again. I'm using a Dell Dimension DIME521with nvidia GeForce 6150LE and a plain Dell usb cord mouse.
Would you happen to know of a solution to my mouse problem? I'd be greatly indebted.
I'm not quite sure how to fix your mouse freezing issue. I'd try a ps2 mouse rather than usb also I'd upgrade to Ubuntu Jaunty if you already havent, and update your system. If none of this works, I'm out of ideas. Maybe you could post on a Ubuntu help forum, if you send me a PM I'll give you some links as I'm unable to post them here due to youtube restrictions.
Thank you for the quick reply. I'm currently using Jaunty, it is my first Ubuntu OS (I really like it, minus the mouse problem) I read somewhere about a PS/2 mouse and now that you mention it I've decided to order a cheap one for testing purposes. I'll give that a try and hope for the best.
I've also posted on a Ubuntu forum, although haven't received a reply as of yet.

Yes you do need internet access to acquire the updates. You'll need to contact an internet service provider in your country, they will guide you.

I don't have any drivers installed and compiz works great, what do drivers do?
MriBackup 2 years ago
Your graphics card had already been configured by the Ubuntu installation thus no drivers were needed.

Today I have learnt so much. Thank you very much.
Useful video. Pleasant video. I will download it
to watch several times. You speak clearly so a
foreigner like me is able to understand you very well.
The clock runing (tic tic tic ) is very cool.
Now I will go to part II. You are very kind teaching people
like me around the world for free. I will show to
my friends your videos.
Best regards from Brazil,
Mario.
