@rowseeden Any game can be simplified down to things like that. Let's take the pyro for example. His incredible ineffectiveness at long range forces pyro players to know alternative routes through the map for flanking. They have to be able to predict where spies go as they are the main spychecking class. They have to learn how to avoid getting killed by heavies considering their huge dps at short range. Engineers can be effective without ever even firing their gun or going to the enemy base.

Somebody said something earlier, the two top rated comments hold no water these days for what TF2 is now: a complete keg of shit. And I think it's always been that way. It is dumbed down whether you like it or not. For a top rated comment, I don't think many people gave it much thought. How a class is played is up to the person anyway. OldSuperMarioBros seems more deluded than any veteran players, and regular players with legitimate complaints for TF2 that I've known.

I remember when I first played tf2 for the 360 in 2008. I was hooked. I would later move on to pc, and even there I was still amazed by tf2. Now, after buying the half life pack, and playing tfc, I was really confused. The amount of weapons and extras was really hard to muster, plus the fact most classes were HIGHLY similar to each other, give or take a weapon or an ability. It's a blocky game that deserves no more respect than gang garrison, or maybe even less.

My first experience with Team Fortress was with TF2 on PS3. And you know what? It's flipping amazing. Then about a year ago, I get the original half-life on PC that comes with TFC and after playing it I found myself asking "WTF is this crap?"

Long story short, I was turned off by the ugly levels, numerous weapons and lack of personality. TF2 is perfection and fans clinging to the old style need to realize that it is too complex and not distinct enough to warrant the same following as TF2.

What most deluded vets call "dumbed down" is a outstanding refinement the way it should be done in my eyes.

And nobody can deny TF2's excellent game design.

@OldSuperMarioBros Every class was playable on off. and def. Games are dumbed down to create a larger user-base. The high learning curve of any game reduces your target audience considerably. To deny that games such as SC2 and TF2 have not been dumbed down is ignorant. They are different games, but TFC had a much more difficult learning curve. Especially when it came to high end league play. I'm sure you love playing COD or halo on console for its auto-aim. But that isn't dumbed down rite?

Though much simplified I believe TF2 managed to capture the idea better, of building a deep class-based shooter around splitting the quake weapons up between the classes. QTF and TFC are great games especially for their respective times and in that same way I think TF2 got it right for its era and just so happens to be my favourite. And as to TFC having a higher learning curve, yes, it did. Higher. But not high. I was young when I first played TFC and I managed to get it in a matter of hours. TF2 is not much different, it's certainly got a higher curve than say, Call of Duty. Yes, TF2 was "dumbed down", but it's also a better game. Valve took the TF model and refined it.

@XGuynFc You misunderstand the meaning of a learning curve. A learning curve is what makes a game hard to understand. TFC is quite simple to understand. Becoming "high level" is skill based, it has nothing to do with the learning curve.

Also, I'd like to add that Civilization and Ultima Online are VERY competitive game. I play Pre-AOS UO and the game is full PVP. So it gets competitive when you roll in a PVP-centric guild. But regardless non-competitive games have learning curves too.

But see, thats not what a SPY does. I know I'm, personally, used to TF2 Spy, but I used to play TFC and Im glad he got changed. A Spy doesn't carry around a Shotgun, he uses his cloak to get behind enemy lines and Backstab people, not Shotgun them in the face. Plus, I agree with OldSuperMarioBros on this argument.

The "problem" with FF and TFC is that it requires a lot of skill and training to play it right and learn all the tricks. So it's really hard to atract new players to it since they are constantly beeing owned...:P

Fortress 2 requires less skill so it's more balanced between experienced and new players.

Actually, it's a Half Life 2 mod, not a Team Fortress 2 mod. So you need a game that gives you the Source SDK, that is until we get it switched over to the Orange Box code(unknown ETA for that right now though).
