@Ayumichiyoko Identify specific techniques within his playstyle and learn them as remote sections. After some practice you should be able to incorporate them into your playstyle and will begin to sound more like him.
@hughmeenit Nah - just another guitarist telling the drummers of the world 'Hey, you, big guy with the sticks and the drool hanging from your mouth - we can do that too!'.
I caught Preston in '87 in Milwaukee, when he wasn't quite as slaphappy as he got later, and still, it was like a freight train blasting through the hall. The guy's a frickin monkey on a guitar. Amazing.
1:27-1:37 he shows us how he feels about everyone who is watching in amazement and desperately trying to make up their minds whether to try to follow his slapping techniques or his riffs! (watch the fret hand and soak in the humiliation!!!)
very cool yep can see where it all starts ,,,then gets passed thru ,,into diffrent styles and techniques ,,, kaki king don, andy antoine still think Tommy is one ,,,just my interp,,,,,practice not perfection

@marky00marky He has a dvd which teaches this tune. It's called "The Guitar of Preston Reed-Expanding The Realm Of Acoustic Playing".
He breaks down and teaches 3 of his tunes. The other 2 being Tribes and Border towns. I've got the performance of Tribes from the dvd on my channel, can't seem to link it in the comment though.
Don't think there is a video on youtube of Border Towns though, but I can certainly recommend the dvd.
everyone who likes august rush obviously don't know the kid isn't playing, otherwise they would definitely watch this guy more often...man he has talent!
if you think this guy is a pioneer you should listen to Tommy Emmanuel. Tommy's been around for years and he gets almost no credit. Breaks my heart that people could be so ill informed.
@TheGruberable Tommy's great, but he's coming from a chet atkins bag, this guy is from a michael hedges bag, both are great but totally different. Gotta say though I prefer TE...
@TheGruberable tommy emmanuel gets plenty of credit. most of these new-wave acoustic guitar slap freaks and reputable acoustic guitar players in general will cite mr. emmanuel as a huge influence.. furthermore he is also appreciated by many a layman
Thats just your opinion. Hedges and Reed BOTH(along with a few other people) were pioneers of fingerstyle. Hedges and Reed began getting known around the same time. They didn't copy eachother and they were not competing. If Hedges rules the fingerstyle genre in your head fine but thats just your opinion.. this is clearly not noise.

yeah, just saw him in cork lastnight, second half was far better, pulled out the impressive tunes. Really enjoyed his Frenzls saw and a few others. He was really nice and signed a cd for my bro. I got a bit sick of so many open tunings though.
It is really cool lookin at these videos, because it jsut shows that he does actually improvise! WHich is funny cause I thought it sounded very rehearsed. Overall i think he's a very cool dude!
check out this guy, his name is Joseph Mainez, i think, he has a similar style but I like him better and his melodies are faster... this is not spam, just a good recommendation.. he kicks ass
it just looks like he's wearing fingerpicks or at least his first 2 fingers. you can see it when he brings his right hand up for the slapping harmonics and whatnot
I've been to a few of his gigs in Dublin and what he seems to use are fat silver (metal) rings on his tapping hand, not fingerpicks. I assume it gives a distinct sound when as oppoed to using fingers to tap with.
Just to clarify everyone - yes, he IS using metal fingerpicks, on the index, middle and ring fingers of the right hand, plus a thumbpick. Check my cover for a slightly slower version to look at!
i have learnt this - there are no tabs out there, you have to go to preston's website and order the transcriptions from bruce muckala which include tabs, and i can assure you, they're top notch as they are all checked by preston himself.
To answer these 2 questions - yes - he is using a thumb pick and metal fingerpicks on first second and third fingers on his right hand. As far as tab goes, the only place to get it is in the Guitar Impact book he did with Bruce Muckala - you can get it at his website, and by the way it is transcribed fantastically! I have just posted a cover of this, Blasting Cap and Love in the Old Country, if you would all like to take a look. Cheers
I have the FL2, they're not so widely used though, great to see someone else is enjoying the sound. I worked for them at the London Guitar Show this year and last, and the people making their way from the Martin and Taylor stands were unanimous that the Cole Clarke's are equal if not better.
