@darrynray If you are wrong, just HOLD YOUR HEAD UP, OH...HOLD YOUR HEAD UP, OH... Thanks for the info, amazing the sound one got out of analog, back then.
@gahrzahk Thanks for the post. It made me laugh, but the question is a good one. It could be an electric organ, or a mellotron. I doubt they would use violins, but I could hear them being violins. The good news is whenever I get a post about this song, I play it and it just gets better and better....
@darrynray I think Argent is using a mellotron on this song and the others, before King Crimson turned it into a joke on The Court of the Crimson King. More economical, hearing about what one had to shell out to the musician unions in those days. I prefer the mellotron in a rock context; the only group to use strings wisely were the Beatles. Everybody else (unintentionally) used it for comic relief.
@gahrzahk One exception is the cello on Ruby Tuesday. There's probably some others too that someone will chime in on. You're probably right with the mellotron. That was the flute sound in Strawberry Fields was it not?
@darrynray It might be; I have to listen to that song again to make sure. I don't have the album of MMT, so I have to plug my stereo up to listen an old CD. I rather judge by ear than Google it, which is so lackadaisical.
On the choruses that's definitely a mellotron using violin sounds, with a piano adding some high notes. Listening to this again I had never really appreciated before the fantastic bass lines played by Chris White. Also a nice idea for Rod, Chris and Colin to sing a verse each.
@MrDiddyDee The Postmaster MrDiddyDee! Thanks for the info. Makes sense from what it sounds like. The bass lines are awesome and the engineering is superb. Thanks for all the posts.....
@MrDiddyDee They were great; along with Paul McCartney, Brian Jones and the genius' at Motown, The Zombies were what one could truly refer to as "musicians musicians"
the clarity is eceptional.engineering at its best.who produced this.you have talent mate.
and does the band.

Are those violins, a mellotron or electric organ in the background?

@gahrzahk I believe it's Argent with some keyboard Wizardry. I could be wrong though....

Did this sound die or is it hidden somewhere? If it's dead, somebody should resurrect it. If lost, please hand it in to lost property.

@rumpraisin I think it has died, but at least it's here for us to enjoy...

@rumpraisin Portugal the Man is considered a new psychedelic band. I like them. No Auto tune, I promise.

@poopypantsmonster I just checked them out. Not bad. Zombies? No, but good Psychedelic Pop..

@rumpraisin There's always good psych revival bands about. XTC did it best when they released stuff as the Dukes of Stratosphear. It's all on YT.

I agree, Dukes Of Stratosphear was a very good band.
This Zombies album is great!

@rumpraisin It's the sound of analog equipment coming out of analog tube speakers back then, before we died and went to digital hell.
