On its face this is a good argument. John Locke addresses this in the treatises. Compact theory - just like you found a club that needs dues to function, and you give up a degree of liberty for the advantage pooling your resources gives you... True, there's no "opt out" of government. But ostensibly we have a choice in our vote. If we wanted to abolish taxation we could vote to do so. Heck we are across the country and it's bankrupting cities and states...

By your logic I suppose you don't approve of the public fire department. A government Of the People is more than a proxie "gun" against those threatening our physical safety. As you say, we all live in the club USA. we pay our dues (taxes) for the government (again, we are the government - the true genius of our Constitution) to help all the people - be it for the military, fire departments, education, or food safety standards.And, hopefully one day (gasp!) health care!

Here's the funny thing about Robin Hood. It's not stealing from the rich to give to the poor. It was taking from the rich government the money it stole from the poor people. It was tribute to the king tax money that belonged to the people in the first place. All those politicians that fancy themselves Robin Hoods seem to always miss that point. Yep..I have been saying this about Robin Hood for years. He took the tax money that King John had taken from the people. Robin Hood was just taking it back for the people whom it was stolen from. I never understood why so many ignore this history. King John was collecting taxes and getting loans to bailout King Richard his brother from the, I beleive Italians, who held him captive. Robin Hood wasn't stealing from producers...he was stealing from Monarchy, that Thomas Pain says are theifs.

I have listen to Beck a few times, and he does sound like Penn for the most part. Beck does not want to legalize pot, and he is attached to Christ like MLK was. Penn is an Atheist, Beck is a Mormon, and Mormons are the strongest supporters of the 2nd amendment, the right to bear arms, of any group of people.

penn, I would point to a State Hunting holiday in Utah, which takes place in Oct where schools are closed to allow the kids to deer hunt. I have also read the statistics for gun ownership state by state, and Utah is #1 . Of course Mormons are the majority in Utah as we all know. If you spend time in southern Utah, you will find communities with loose knit militias. I will admit that I am speaking from empirical evidence, not any Govt statistics except maybe from gun sales.

The Mormons organized their own army in Nauvoo when they were persecuted. Joseph Smith was the general.That militarism is part of the sub culture. Attend a preisthood meeting in southern Utah towns, and they are proud of the fact that they defended themselves from Yankees who did not like plural marriage, Confederates, and Indians. After Smith, the militia was still srong under Young, until it became a state. Mormons who moved to Mexico had organize militias even after the turn of the century.

I'm a Christian Libertarian, Solely on the fact that I believe Government should be more locally powered let it be State or Community. The Lower in the Bureaucracy the more power to the people. Starting from Federal down to Community.

I too and a libertarian atheist. Don't know if this request is still current, I recommend that you take a glance at Ayn Rand's 'the virtue of selfishness', chapter called Man's Rights, as well as some others. Short book, short chapters---speeches really. Even though she (for some reason) despised the Libertarian party, as you probably know, the Libertarian party tends to love Rand. I think it may give you some ideas for your article, exactly as you requested.

I'm a Libertarian. I don't think we should be forced to do anything by our government. I believe the IRS should not have the ability to enforce any legislation. They should simply be a department of the government that handles the influx of taxes.

With that said, Glenn Beck consistently makes an ass of himself. His demographic is the rural, less educated segment of our population. And they tend to believe nearly anything they hear him say. This is smart business for Fox, but sad for Americans.

i think beck is right 99% of the time....i served 5 years on active duty in the army as a chemical officer reaching rank of captain, and i have 10 years of college(including D.D.S.) i work hard, pay my taxes an a good father and have been married to the same woman for 23 years. seems to me that current government is doing just about everything possible to put us in the gutter. who is putting things out there better than beck is? olberman???PLEASE advise...thanks

I'm not attempting to argue with you about the merit of Glenn Beck. I just believe, at times, he leaves common sense behind, in order to tow the Republican party line.

I mentioned before, I'm a Libertarian. But before now, I've been a Republican. When George W. Bush threw fiscal responsibility out the window, I switched.
