Well, I am germann and I love this song so much, it reminded me of my Grandfahter how he must have felt when he met and marrfied my grandmother. Well. I decided to write a third verse with a happy ending. Hier it is:
Who is this class for ?? the student or the professional who has the ego to tell the student I can sing it better. Where is the teaching and the learning.
But bad for masterclass. This is humiliating for the student. Lehmann didn't give any advice- just showed her how to do it. I think she had to make her understand and not make her just copy.
I agree, I don't think it was done to humiliate her though and things have moved on in a lot of masterclass workshops... but not in all, regrettably :)
@pianomags Lehmann was huge on getting her pupils to find their own voice/ originality, in theory anyway. I speculate that she just couldn't resist singing, in this instance.
Which just goes to show. You can sing as pretty as you like but if there is no intellect, spirit, emotion and experience behind it then it's not worth much.
She mentioned that she has lost her voice... but somehow her singing made me like the song. Last night, I went back and sang the song to myself, and somehow got a little bored. But this morning, when I watched her instruction again, I fell in love with this little Lied once again. Sie ist ja wunderbar...
Madame Lehmann certainly had that "something". I've heard old recordings but never seen her before. No wonder my grandfather was so captivated. She is so warm and vulnerable as she sings, like when my grandpa told me a story. I just instantly love her.
Birgit, of course there are a lot of fine artists e.g. Lucia Popp (she died to early) or the great Gundula Janowitz (I hope you heard her last songs of Richard Strauss)

wollte Gott, wollte Gott
Waer ich heut nicht bei ihr....

and the End
So will mir doch die ganze Woche

Sonntag
by Ludwig Uhland (1787-1862)

Very old fashion way of explaining how to sing, but she remains an excellent interpreter of Lieder and opera.
Thanks for uploading this jewel!
