Supermassively - what's "sad" is that good music should be policitised, reduced to a jingle for a political party - and I'd feel the same if it were Labour or Lib Dems doing it
Look !, there is Land of Hope and Glory used by the Tories, Jerusalem used by Labour ( and the womens institute) and Jupiter ( or the hymn I vow to thee my country) used by nobody but really should be the national Anthem for all the UK, when it comes to themes and anthems Britain as produced one for anyone and any occasion.
@TimeismyLord Ah no. Do they even call school dances in England, a prom? Prom stands for promenade concert.The official name is The Henry Wood Promenade Concert
sadly, they also took a part of "Jupiter" and made it a song for the British Conservative Party! I'm very glad to say that I don't know the words, and I don't want to - it's hard to concentrate on music when words get in the way - I always have problems listening to Pomp & Circumstance No 1 without "hearing" Land of Hope and Glory at the back of my mind!
@zedro1000 I didn't say the tune was *written for* the tories! but anyone can take a tune, however old, and put words to it to suit themselves. Ssearch YT for "I vow to thee my country" - it's called a hymn but i've heard it sung at tory conferences like a theme song - heard it on tv, i wasn't there msyelf!
@franl155 "I always have problems listening to Pomp & Circumstance No 1 without "hearing" Land of Hope and Glory..."
The “Land of Hope & Glory, Mother of the free” section (and only that section) of Pomp & Circumstance No.1 is known throughout the USA only as “The graduation song”. They always play it at graduations, at least at high school ones - without any lyrics, by the way.
@Rayzqan 'twas also extracted from Jupiter and used for a son called World in Union for the Rugby World Cup. It's an awesome piece of music - the quality difference between Jupiter and the earlier piece is brilliant.
@Pygmalleon Sadly, the rugby version of the Jupiter theme changes the rhythm and/or timing and thus, effectively, the melody. Can't say for certain - I've only heard it like that a couple of times but it sounded so utterly wrong I couldn't stand it.
@Rayzqan I'm not surprised the Mormons would use it, considering the lyrics of the hymn. First verse is all "I serve my country to the end" but the second is "But there's another country..." It describes possibly an abstract Christendom. "We may not count her army, we may not see her king..."
I'm no fan of religion but I always liked those lyrics: - "...and soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase, and her ways are ways of gentleness and all her paths are peace."
ooh! Ood!!!! LOVE THE OOD!! <3 :3

what does Proms stand for? It's not really a high school prom...

@TimeismyLord
Proms = promenade concert, i.e. a classical concert where those attending stand instead of sit.

@franl155 Except that they didn't. The song's been around since 1925. It has nothing to do with the Conservative party.

@franl155 How is that sad? The Conservative Party is a breath of fresh air that the UK needs.

5:52 - 7:34 That is the same tune they used for the song "Anthem to Our King" by Octapella, and LDS a capella band.
