Fallen was a brilliant album, despite its unfinished state. I do feel a preference for the early FOTN; Dawnrazor is still my favorite. But, I have greatly enjoyed the the later albums as well. I was initially very dubious about NFD, because of the obvious similarity of their vocalist's style with McCoy's. But I do have to say that this video won me over...
a wonderful feeling when you find a band that you never heard before, and when you listen to their 1st song, you are sure that it's your new favourite song
Hrmm - I think you guys are forgetting the Carl didn't create the sound of FOTN - he was the singer - The other members created similar music to FOTN after they really broke up eg Rubicon and Last Rites. So to say that it's a ripoff or whatever - listen to Morning Sun and tell me if that's a real Nephilim album - or just the singer trying to make money off his former bands name
Defenitly the FOTN sound...even the singing is a Carl ' when I close my eyes I can't hear the difference' thing......So...Why bother????Sounds good, but totally hanging on to a sound they used to have succes with...are they trying again for that succes without Carl??? ME THINK MWAAAAHHHHH
Ok, Mourning Sun isn't perfect, but songs like Shroud, Requiem XIII 33, She and Mourning Sun are freaking awesome songs, so beautiful, dark, haunting and melancholic.
Oh, and it isn't 10 years in the work, more like 2 years. (see Fallen - 2002 unofficially released FoTN cd)
The hat came Ministr's Al Jorgensen...think out side the box lol....there are more bands in the world than F.O.T.N...lol.....as great as they were.
And Carl certainly wasn't the first or only person to put growly vocals to heavy music...methinks its been done many times by many great bands....i personaly grew up on metal...and thats where my main infulences come from ;o) but i understand its easy to pressume the obvious....i do it to sometimes ;o)
Wow so great comments guys, The singer apparently sucks and isn't good looking, I'd have to say Bob sounds waaaay better than Carl McCoy, He can actually harmonize with the music instead of just being in the music like the fields. Carl is nothing without the original members don't give him too much credit, he's like Andrew Eldrich in SOM, except they sucked without Hussey and the other members.
Um... Andrew was the main songwriter of The Sisters... As much as Wayne Hussey is fucking class, The Sisters could easily do without him. Hence, The Mission. :D
AND I disagree with the McCoy comment, but I suppose THAT'S down to opinion.
Look at the credits for the First & Last And Always. All music by Hussey except track 3 Marx/Adams/Hussey, Tracks 6,8,9,10 by Gary Marx.
Track 7 Hussey/Adams/Eldrich...All words by Eldrich...Sorry, Eldrich wrote the music for one song, and that's why the last two SOM albums aren't as good as the first
No! I know that! I'm sorry, I should have made my point more clear. He's the MAIN song writer, as in, he's had most of the input to date. Even though First and Last and Always is my favourite Sisters album, Eldritch is still a great musician in my opinion. I rather liked Floodland and Vision Thing by the way.
I agree with you I do like Eldrich, I think Vision thing was a good record, I just didn't think SOM could reach their full peak without the rest of the members. And basically, My original comment was just defending a band who is really good, it's just too bad it's a full on comparison with FON.
I dunno about your whole "Carl is nothing without the original members" thing, did you hear the Fallen album? Alright it was a bunch of unfinished stuff that he didn't want released but my god if it's that good how it is imageine what it would be like if they finished it. An McCoy does harmonize with the music a lot more in both Fallen and Mourning Sun.
Yeah, maybe TFON created their own distinct sound, but Carl McCoy is NOTHING without the band. They all need to reunite (although that will not happen :( for make some kind of good music, and not shit like Mourning Sun (it sucks in my opinion).So...,both bands aren't perfect I think, but prefer to listen to NFD than the last shit by McCoy,at least.
Yeah...maybe the sound is similar too because the ex-members of The Fields. However,TFON is more a family business now,Carl is great, but the old music was better,Mourning Sun sounds very nu.
Yeah...maybe,I understand.Although,I'm a big fan of Voices of Masada,Elusive, the Fields or the Sisters, for example, but I don't try to sing like Andrew,Jan Kenneth...The fact,or at least for me,is that both bands seems make nu-metal shit with some western goth rock elements.I've listened this morning the old good The Nephilim by TFON and it's another thing, anyway the video is by NDF and I'm talking here about the Fields, hehe!
Hey Guys how did you suss me out...I spend my days and nights dreaming of being and sounding just like Carl McCoy. I Guess I will have to accept that it will never happen, and I spent so much time getting my hair just like his too....damn!! And I also wasted all that time getting a beer belly only to realise he was skinny!!! You can imagine how gutted I was!!!! (No Pun intended)
What a waste of band, cool melodies but nothing more...poor copy of the style and sound of The Fields! And the vocalist seems more the singer of Korn than Carl McCoy,poor idiot, hihi! They need to make their own type of music, not try to imitate to The Fields!
I bought the first CD from this guys without hearing it first, I was very disappointed. The guy is trying desperately to sound like Carl McCoy, only he sounds more like a nu-metal singer.
Then again, I haven't really liked any other post-Fields of the Nephilim projects from any members other than Carl.
I'll stick with the Fields (or Carl's, I guess) newest one. Mourning Sun is fantastic!
Well that doesn't exactly make sense. If the "old stuff" sounds dated, then why do you listen to NFD? By the sounds of it, that's the sound they tried to mimic except with more Metal elements to it.
Zoon was a Nefilim release - Carl McCoy was the only member of The Neph on that release and doesn't sound that much like the Neph, so I can't see why you're referring to that at all...
It's not really "CyberGoth" though is it? My point wasn't that they were bad for having Metal Elements, it was the fact that you said they were better than a band they were aspiring to sound like.
Too tell the truth, I think you got muddled in your own arguement.
I dont know all the details, Im not a Goth. FON reminds me of an old Goth powdering her white face between the cracks and the hollows to look like a Moonchild! I like both bands but prefer to hear new stuff. My primary purpose is to stay sober. Then who is the band Broon, are they related to these bands?
The CORRECT answer why I prefer NFD is because it sounds more honest and less pretentious than FON! (After listening to both FON and NFD!) But that is only MY opinion!
I've seen these guys live, last weekend, it had the same atmosphere as tony could create with the fields of the nephilim (yes, I've seen em back then, I'm that old :pp). was an awesome gig.
@alphabetgreen: I've seen last rites a few years back, & its a very good band as well
As a late 1980s goth, I'm pleasantly surprised with NFD, and I'm looking forward to listening to Last Rites. There's a certain sound that FotN, Sisters & The Mission had in the 80s, that no other band could emulate. Fuck Marilyn Manson and all this nu-metal shite. Good goth bands that perform sound melodic and atmospheric rock are bloody hard to find. I'm looking forward to hearing all of NFD, Last Rites and FotN AD's new stuff. Correct me if you dare.
Some people bemoan the fact that NFD sound like the Fields of the Nephilim, but I revel in the similiarity. I love old school gothic and am disappointed that that aren't more bands doing it. When did the Mission put out a truly Mission album lately? Where have the Sisters of Mercy gone? I must admit I was very pleased with Carl McCoys most recent effort and hope he continues to put out more music like that, but we need more truly gothic bands!
Perfect band, perfect album. Really good goth rock bands are hard to find. This one delivers, what I like about this genre. No corny guitar-pop, no depressive-girlie-rock. Instead it's hard rocking, truely dark, metallic, and sometimes melancholic in a totally un-slushy way.
by no means fotn but who could ever be other than them. without comparing them these guys still kick some serious ass. didn't even know they existed until i saw this vid. thx
I am seeing both NFD and FoTN in May, looking forward to both, whatever the similarities or not. FoTN are my temple and looking forward to worshipping again!!
I think the video kicks ass! Since these are the original musicians of FotN it seems only fair for them to sound like that!! Carl McCoy is still the best though and a lot better looking than this singer ;-)
You're having a laugh!!! Mr McCoy must be laughing his socks off!!! Tony Petit & Steve Carey such a waste of talent and it's a case of Stars In Your Eyes..'Tonight Matthew I'm Gonna Be Carl McCoy!!! Sounds like Blue Water to me...
Luckily NFD are much more than their videos. Their live performance is just brilliant, and although with the obvious reference to FoTN, they stand one of the best goth acts on the circuit at the moment.
The return of FoTN will just show audiences that Carl just doesn't have it anymore.
Sorry all...Neph is one my all times faves as well, but this singer is lame. Carl McCoy soundalike, but the lyrics are insipid. Mourning Sun fucking rules.
NFD sounds like Dawnrazor era Neph, 'cept without Carl's vocal range and mystique. But Mourning Sun suffers at times from sounding artificial because the real band's missing in favor of "ghost musicians". Carl and the other Neph members need to reunite - all there is to it.
I couldn't agree more...Mourning Sun does grow on you though. I hated it at first but then I recalled that I hated Zoon for about the first 6 mos after it came out and now it's one of my all time fave albums, so I gave Mourning Sun another chance. Still, the rumour is that Carl is in talks with the others for a reunion, which would be amazing.
Still into the home baking then. This is going to sound totally shallow but couldn't they get a good looking lead singer rather than someone who looks like that Korn prick? That voice is not a rare commodity. Anyway excellent utility goth to keep us ticking over for now. By the way Mourning Sun is awesome - everyone check it out if you haven't already.
WOW! Can't believe i came across this by mistake!I have gone back almost 20 years to FOTN days again:) About blooming time we had something to take their place:)Will be seeing them in October:)
No, it's Simon Rippin, who played with FOTN on 2000 live tour, and on the Nefilim album. But you can find Nod and his brother Paul in Last Rites: www.lastrites.org
Good enough song!! But I have two questions to make:
a) Why did U write "...feature ex memberSSSS of FotN..." when actually just are Tony in the band?
b) Have the band sounding so similar to FotN?
