I think anything below 45,000$ a year is a degree of poverty it gets worse as you go down, but for anyone in the 25-45,000 range there is still a lot of suffering that can be linked with matters of economics, I think to understand how much worse it is to be destitute, welfare or wage slave you have to experience and live it, and vice-versa a lot of poor aren't aware of the level of debasement they are experiencing because they don't know anything or much outside their experience
I will grant you the timing of the American Economic Decline as starting mid-1970s, based on the looting and pillage taking place against America's poor and middle class, by the elites, aka "The Rich." They hide behind their Government, their Law and Order, their Financial System, and their Corporations. But FEMINISM and ABORTION demarcates the TRUELY DIABOLICAL LOOTING of the American Family, Culture, Economy and yes, Paychecks. Smarten up, American People. We have ruined ourselves.
The flatscreen is a metaphor for the culture of debt Americans cultivated.
If you are a working class member, you have to take responcability. Sure there was an indoctrination taking place, but the decision is still on the person that's borrowing the money. Isn't that the deciding factor?
My family never made any debts, instead we had a black and white TV until the 1990s. I mean, doesn't saving money on principle sounds more reasonable than making any debt at all?
child abuse is sitting him in front of the televisual screen of retinal stimulation that perpetuates his ADD and conditions him to a culture of expenditures :P
No one blows their paycheck on a flat screen TV! Chomsky is correct in that wages in the U.S. have stagnated to the point of being dynamically put into decline by inflation. If anything that flat screen TV was bought with credit ,the only affordable way of sustainable living in free market capitalism. It's an economic con
"that flat screen TV was bought with credit ,the only affordable way of sustainable living in free market capitalism"
rubbish. It is the fiat system that encourages debt. Not to mention the mountains of taxation (to pay for all these 'wonderful' government programs like the War on Drugs etc).
It is the US Government that has put the US into gigantic debt.
In a fiat system the Government will intentionally inflate/devalue its money supply in an attempt to dissolve its debt.... but not yours
Yeah well you give me an example of one person you know who has dropped cash on a large flat screen TV. I'm willing to bet that 8 out of 10 flat screen owners used a credit card they couldn't pay back on. Free market capitalism is just another term for usury. I agree the US has put us into debt, but it's because of their enabling corporate and financial usury
What's the point of saving up to buy things when inflation will wipe out your savings.
I agree the whole economy is setup to create debt, but you are incorrectly blaming free markets as tho it is inherent in the 'system'. You should look more at monetary policy , the banking system and government for the reason we're in a debt-ridden society.
Unregulated free market practices are WRONG. You will not convince anyone, that the interests of big screen TV manufacturers and banks are shared by people in debt, or struggling financially. If you believe that markets aren't to blame for the current economic situation, then you're either naive or you are one f the few who benefit from free market policies. This type of market policy favors economic growth over the alleviation of poverty.
God, he is gonna die soon yer know folks!!!. He is no Che guevara but i will be distressed by Chomskys death--a good man sharing information ( acheiving nothing) but a good man nonetheless.
Yeah, I was really excited. Actually all I did was email him and ask him if it was ok, haha hope I'm not going to get him a flood of interview requests now!
YouTube wont let me watch past 57. NWO shills suppressing info--typical! lol

One of the benefits of being poor is that I can't afford to buy a large tv. Books on the other hand are plentiful and cheap.

Let's put it this way...

I'm not going to repeat myself, so just read my last sentence in my previous reply.

Raising public awareness is a fairly important goal and Chomsky does a pretty good job at it.
Slug99 2 years ago
Slug99: sure he does.....................and then once youve " raised public awareness"( once you have put give a damn in peoples heads, then what? )
you already know the answer--people do nothing.
