This is not true. Brutality is avoided through law and government. After that, you can make up any little story you like to tell yourself why your freedom is being restricted by other men and why you "let" it happen.
@Mathenaut my time would be just as well spent trying to explain the existence of water to a drowning blind man. you have no capacity to understand because you have no inclination in seeing the truth. your few short statements here have unmistakably revealed that.
Nice cop out. Come back when you're prepared to address how and why relativism is better understood in terms of christian ignorance than in terms of how it is actually described and applied.
@anewdayproductions What was not acceptable in the eyes of society 30 years age becomes acceptable and even embraced by today's standards.
Our standards of what is acceptable on various media outlets such as film, television, magazines etc have been lowered . The music industry is another example of how moral standards have been lowered, the envelope keeps getting pushed further and further. The standards virtues and chasity has also been lowered.
yes, relativism gives way to egoism because relativism is founded on subjectivism, which must give way ethiclly to egoism once competing ideologies emerge, which then boils down to a power struggle.
you sound like you miss my point. You say it makes sense to treat everyone well separate from a mind preceding the human mind that defines right and wrong yet i can think of myriad reasons why it would be a 'good idea' to steal from you for my own benefit. Can your worldview deal with that fact?
And what checks Christians that does not check others? Answer-- a reliable moral standard. Any Christians who have committed evil are stood up to by... wait for it...
other Christians! Christians check Christians!
John Piper is not the first person to make this "pastiche" . Its common sense and you don't need to be a university useful idiot to use p.s. or sociology terms. replikantzero sounds rather pretentious and too smart for their own good.
see? there you go. sounding like a first year poli-sci undergrad linking terms together you do not understand. "total depravity is central to understanding christainity..." put your head down a little so i can smack you on the back of it. i was a calvinist, but no longer. i am still a presbyterian, but i do not need calvin, nor his forebearer augustine, to understand gospel truth. LOVE is central to understanding christianity.
Not trying to avoid a debate, but to defend Calvinism as an accurate understanding of scripture is best left to another discussion with a video that touches upon that discussion.
The video posted is based upon the argument John Piper has made on the effects of moral relativism upon governments. Whether the argument is flawed or accurate should be the basis of any arguments posted.
He makes, what I believe to be, a valid argument in that moral relativism leads to anarchy. Governments create laws to quell anarchy and create peace at the cost of freedom. Moral relativism is the disregard of any constraint upon human passions.
Although human nature or total depravity is a central part in understanding Christianity, this argument about moral relativism can be accepted from a secular prospective.
he attempts to use terms from political science and sociology and blend them into some kind of pastiche for a weird apologetic for i don't know what. its propaganda, and not very good propaganda at that.
great vid!

Relativism isn't anarchy, nor is anarchy a necessary consequence. Fail before the first 60 seconds.

@Mathenaut wrong wrong and wrong.

Well, you can say that all you want. Doesn't change anything of the matter.

@Mathenaut you're correct. it doesn't change the reality of it. however, the same goes for you.

Well, feel free to actually assert your point. I'm sure that you have an argument. Right?
Right?

That is moral relativism in action.

you do need a standard of unity, doesn't mean the bible is the only thing presenting a standard to be agreed upon.
anyone with a bit of sense will realise that its good to treat people as you'd want to be treated...
the bible is about duality - double standards - law and grace... it's no wonder christian societies have been plagued with violence...
love thy neighbour as thyself... until you think you're more righteous than they are of course.

just to help clarify things: my last statement of my first post, that was indeed sarcasm.
to be honest, I don't agree with treating people as I'd want to be treated.
I did, but don't any more.
sorry I didn't come back and delete my posts for you.

This may happen as early as the next four years if Obama is "elected." He has no moral standard other than what he creates in his own wisdom.
