@ASFALT21 Then you're not accepting that opinion to be so quick to say it's false lmao. You're just as bad as religious bigots with your narrow mindedness.
The idea that Jesus would love America, a system based on the capitalist system of greed, where the country nearly tears itself in half over providing health care to the poor, where the wealthy control everything and try to block unemployment insurance, where torture is in vogue again, and who PREEMPTIVELY go to war, is HEEEEEELARIOUSSSS!
II like this guy. it's interesting that the Ancient Greeks had most of the 10 commandments written before Christianity although the Greeks called it something else. It was about behaving in a certain way in your interactions with others and with your own internal dialogue. A guide for the best way for all people to get along together. But this in not about being unpatriotic......we all need that cohesion to work together BUT only a little patriotism....too much is just as bad as not enough.
@jamespeacevern all patriotism is bad because it elevates country over principle. This type of thinking never turns out well and leads to all sorts of abuses. It also sets up an attitude that prevents change and improvement. If your mythology says that "america is good"( as glenn beck says) then you will look the other way and justify all sorts of evils, which is exactly what we see. patriotism is like a religious cult belief system where facts become irrelevant.
@LordShandor Listen, I agree that too much patriotism and "blind faith" are bad but with out a small amount of patriotism and love of "tribe" you have chaos and a power vacuum that some other ideology ,religion or peoples can fill. The great liberal thinker (Liberal in the philosophical sense not american political sense) Bertrand Russell talks about social cohesion in his undefeated book the History of Western Philosophy and how important it is for the well being. Patriotism=Social Cohesion
3 tribal love does not apply to the context of patriotism in america and increasingly so in europe as well.
4 racial hatred, tv and sports also induce social cohesion. also bad choices.
love of tribe is verboten if you are white. patriotism/nationalism always ends up ideology over fact/reason and the state becomes a saint, above all crticism. patriotism is bad policy to pursue if liberty matters.
@LordShandor By undefeated I mean unsuccessfully challenged by other philosophers etc. This is due to the objectivity and open mindedness and full understanding of various ideoligies and their impact through history. "2 all faith is blind by definition." yeah and I never said other wise?....." 3 tribal love does not apply to the context of patriotism in america and increasingly so in europe as well." Again perhaps you confuse Nationalism with Patriotism. "
@jamespeacevern Every person with a philosophy would say that sort of thing. To say it is unsuccessfully challenged is the opinion of its follower and is not a statement that can be considered fact. Every ideology *claims* to be objective, rarely, if ever, is this the case if such a thing is even possible.
I don't confuse the two, they are equivalent except as semantic agenda.
@LordShandor "4 racial hatred, tv and sports also induce social cohesion. also bad choices." You are not logical. Racial hatred does not create social cohesion in a state. It breaks down cohesion. Again you use Nationalism and patriotism interchangeably. You last statement is just not correct. The state is often the target for angry patriots who feel democracy or various freedoms are being undermined. Go to the Congo and see what happens with out cohesion of the various peoples in a country.
@jamespeacevern It does amongst those on that side of the ideological spectrum. NOTHING unites everyone. Even patriotism, plenty of people see through it or are apathetic to it, It is just another -ism in the marketplace of ideas.
Patriots can't attack the state. If they did this, they would be considered terrorists by said government and accused of treason. That they consider themselves patriotic is beside the point. Patriotism is a tool of the state. We don' t have cohesion with patriotism.
Patriotism in a liberal democracy creates the frame work of social cohesion and stability to move forward at a safe pace that benefits all. Can governments take advantage? Of course. That is why it is every persons duty to be ever vigilant of abuses of power or the system. Patriotism does not have to mean love of government. It can be love of you neighbors and pride in all the achievements you have made together. I would highly recommend History of Western Philosophy. Also Niall Ferguson books
@jamespeacevern that is a very idealistic and throughly unhistoric view of what can/has actually transpired. democracy doesnt work and has never existed. the people are never vigilant and government always oversteps. dealijg with government is always "making a deal with the devil". what it can is irrelevant, what it is is what we are concerned with.
@LordShandor First of all the ideas ARE based on historical fact not idealism hence quoting historians who specialise in this stuff like Ferguson and Russell. If you really study history and not just you view point of history you will see this. I think you are confusing patriotism with nationalism. Being vigilant DOES work and when thing really get bad the shit DOES hit the fan even if it does mean heading to rebellion such as the American war of Independence.
@jamespeacevern there is no such thing as historical fact, only the appearance thereof. As Emerson stated, “There is properly no history; only biography”.
Patriotism IS nationalism. What difference do you see other than semantics?
The shit hits the fan because man is NEVER vigilant. Vigilance is a requirement for sustained liberty yes, but it is not practiced nor has it ever been.
@LordShandor I QUOTE YOU FROM ABOVE "that is a very idealistic and throughly unhistoric view" so here you use history to support your ideals and now you say it does not matter. Cause and effect can be seen through out history. To deny this is to deny the lessons of our past leading to repeats of horror and tragedy. If you truly research historical fact and approach it in a detective/scientific manner you get to the bones of what happened not just "history written by the victors" as you alludeto
@jamespeacevern There is no history proper. And it doesn't matter because, "We learn from history that we learn nothing from history." George Bernard Shaw
And besides, "What is history but a fable agreed upon." Napoleon
@jamespeacevern can you be partially pregnant? you are either free or you aren't.
if another claims ownership in your body, and all government does, then by definition, you are not free. you are slave. democracy may be liberal slavery, but slavery ot remains.
@LordShandor What a ridiculous thing to say. It is a terrible analogy. There is such a thing as balance and opposing forces. Good government has strong balance and opposing forces entrenched in it's system. With out this it eventually collapses. Systems in their infancy start with a rigid system of ideology and traditions becoming more liberal until they hit the "sweet spot" between the good of the many and individual liberty. As time progresses individual liberty takes over more and........
@jamespeacevern Good government does not exist. Let us look at what Jefferson had to say on the matter:
"History, in general, only informs us what bad government is. "
"The natural progress of things is for government to gain ground and for liberty to yield. "
The "good of the many" is always the excuse to destroy liberty and is never accomplished because without individual rights, the many are destroyed as a matter of due course.
@LordShandor and more until the system breaks down in some way (through revolution say) and then a new synthesis is born with a new set of traditions ideologies etc. The process has been witnessed time and again (and by the way this is the history of the losers in a way as collapsed empires can't hide the fact they collapsed.) So these things can indeed be studied and analyzed and lessons can be learned. This is indeed a balance between individual freedoms and the freedom of the whole.
@jamespeacevern also known as Hegelian Dialectic. The synthesis is always at the expense of liberty and the common good of the people. This is why revolutions become necessary.
The only lesson to be learned is that people are not diligent and there is no balance between liberty and "group good". When groups are said to have rights, the individual is trampled and ALL rights become privilege or non-existent. There is nothing to balance, you are either free or you aren't.
@jamespeacevern And unless the individual is free, there is no freedom. Individual freedom is always destroyed through the excuse of some group or social good.
Taking away individual freedom is NEVER good, period. Anyone who tries to argue otherwise is either lying or severely delusional.
ALL right are individual.
To suggest group interests can trump individual rights is to suggest that the initiation of force is legitimate.
Respond to this video... Enjoying debate...but need to go. Really though do try picking up that tome of a book by Russell. Really objective ....dry read but very very objective about history.
@jamespeacevern I'm American. And I'm surprised you wrote a comment like that when America is 2 weeks away from defaulting on it's loans. Get the fuck outta here you moron
@Renagade4 Sorry dude, but the entire course and behaviour of your government violates separation of church and state; you live in a theocracy run by psuedo-christians who want to Dominate the Planet militarily. sad for a country created in response to religious bigotry and crushing theocracy in Europe. "Christians" in America ignore the fact that Christ was a radical Socialist; because that fact is very inconvenient if one uses greed and violence to Rule The World on behalf of the 'son of god'.
@SmileyGarrish I don't really see the relevance to what I wrote, but I do agree with you on all of your points. However I wouldn't call it "your government." If I owned the government things would be a lot different. :P
@Renagade4 there is no such thing as separation of church and state, that is a myth.
What the 1st Amendment says is, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof".
There is no separation there, it says Congress can have nothing to say about the matter for it or against it. Of course they ignore this all the time, but that is another issue.
@LordShandor I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should "make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," thus building a wall of separation between Church & State.
@Renagade4 The phrase "under God" was incorporated into the Pledge of Allegiance June 14, 1954, by a Joint Resolution of Congress amending §7 of the Flag Code enacted in 1942.
"As for flags, they're much less useful than toilet paper. No one has been caused distress by running out of flags. They become useful in times of crisis and unjust manipulative coercions pitting the victim against the victor or vice-versa" - Serj Tankian
did ya ever think it isn't a statement of fact but a request for Gods blessing? if you don't believe in God then you might not get it, but i've always taken the song and statement as a request of Gods blessing, not a statement that God ''does'' bless America more than any other place. the way some people act i don't know why he would though...
@XtremePacifist And so China will take over......you think human rights in America are bad now...see what happens if America truly does fail. People are such idiots.
@jamespeacevern It failed a long time ago. Many countries have more liberty in many areas than we do. Take Portugal for example, most drugs have been legal for a decade. Take public nudity in Europe, can't do that here. In America we think decapitation is ok, but nipples are going to destroy society. We don't have right in America or haven't you been paying attention?
carlin isn't against religion. there are other sweet fairy tales around. carlin is against bullshit losers who tell others what to do, but are fucking no representation of their own teachings. those r real morons

religious people need to go blow their brains out or use that pea sized brain to see how much shit is in that bible...... i say we destroy every remaining bit of religious bullshit starting with the pope.. but thats me.. and what i want done.
@djshawman From what I hear, his family said he was a kind and loving man. Just because you point out bullshit in the world doesn't mean you're some depressed suicide case.
@SereneSatellites are you fucking stupid? it was a proposed amendment but you can legally burn the flag for any reason. Its protected in the first amendment.
@SereneSatellites the supreme court upheld that flag burning was part of free speach in 1968.... and it outlawed flag burning laws in 48 states in 1989. I can go to walmart and buy 100 flags, and burn them all day long as long as i don't violate burning laws.
I love Carlin, he was my favorite comedian and in my opinion the best but frankly towards the end he got a bit too political. I like to watch his bits to laugh not get a lesson.
anarchy leads to mogadishu :)= maybe you should be senator or whatever so you can find an alternative to people having jobs and an economy so everyone can share all the earths resources evenly and for free :) since you have all the answers when youre not smoking on your bong dOoOoOoOd !
@nethaeleth Spot on...all these guys talking about how we should "tear it all down" in various words DON'T HAVE ANY ANSWERS. because right now as the human beings we have the best systems in the west. Is it doing just fine with out any problems or abuses of right???? NO it's full of problems but it is up to us to get them fixed. That is the price of freedom and our system.
@jamespeacevern Best system? Ours is just as out of control as the others.
WE imprison more of our population that any communist or totalitarian country.
WE spend more on our military that any others...to invade and occupy more than 150 countries.
And on and on and one. Price of freedom? WE DON'T HAVE FREEDOM! The state claims rights over your body, that means you aren't free. You can't eat certain things, you can't do certain things. That's called slavery.
wow. hate your country and hate god, you insecure neurotic guitarhero goth-emo pr*** :) wheres your bong, man. george carlin's great but maybe he should make up his mind ofr once if he A. hates god or B. god doesn't exist. don't owrry jkd61 we won't take your little bong from you stay home and stay stoned dooOoOood!
@strumphix21 yea, you kinda got it wrong.. he wasn't just counting up countries.. he said Pitsburgh after Transilvania so he probably just meant different places.. (towns, countries, continents)!
I don't believe in God but if there is one up there I doubt he/she (probably he) favors America over everyone else. If you really have to say God Bless ANYTHING, how about "God Bless EVERYONE?"
@romefox I LIKE BILL HICKS MORE THAN CARLIN. MICGHAEL TSARION IS THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE CONSPIRACY RESEARCHER/LECTURER/AUTHOR. DR. BILL DEAGLE, LEO ZAGAMI, JORDAN MAXWELL AND ALEXANDRE DUMAS PERE ARE HIGHLY INFORMATIVE AS WELL.
@ilovetogofast88 Probably because we are a nation founded on Christian values and not every country in the world believes in the God that we think of. We're not perfect but that shouldn't stop anyone from saying that.
We are a country founded on secular values. If it was founded on Christian values then Christianity would be the official religion and would have been noted in the Constitution. See Article 11 of the Treaty of Tripoli. If God=truth why do you Christians betray him by lying?
@CourageHonorLoyalty We are a country founded on a hybrid of them both, however the Founding Fathers were largely Christians. In addition, the Pledge of Allegiance and our Deceleration of Independence both mention God, thus we can surmise that we were founded on a hybrid of them both. However, seeing has how secular values and Christian values are very similar, it's not too far from the truth to use Christian values.
And I think you should look up the definition of lying.
@jcane28eatsfatpuss Values which are taught in the Christian faith. In addition, I've changed my stance. I no longer agree that we were founded on secular values. We were indeed founded on Christian values. Also, misleading isn't necessarily the same as lying.
@m1ndfr34k117 Elaborate on your ideas about Christian values and be specific. If you spout Reagan and Bush era Republican propaganda I'll know where this is coming from. Misleading and/or not telling the whole truth is the same as lying, regardless of whatever spin you put on it the result is the same. I would think one who champions Christain values would already know this. The fact that you believe (or have been lead to believe) that America was founded on Christian values does not make it so.
@jcane28eatsfatpuss Do I really need to? No murder, stealing, etc. Dear God, here we go. Assuming I'm going to "spout...propaganda" that you don't agree with. What about you? Will you spout Obama propaganda? And no, they are not. If I say go left because there's something you want, but I know you should go right, I'm misleading you but not lying to you. See? You're dealing an absolute which is failing. And it's fact. Simply type in "Was the USA Founded as a Christian Nation?" and click 2nd link
@ilovetogofast88 Because the world, or at least the parts of it in which intelligent thought occasionally occurs, is disappointed in God. And something tells me that God, assuming s/he exists, is pretty damn disappointed in us, too, so we don't really deserve that blessing... And I don't want a blessing from that asshole, either way, so count me out.
I won't argue against your second paragraph... But I will point out that delusions about national perfection are rather wide spread/global.
@ilovetogofast88 Eh, you think? You haven't? ...Wait, which part of my comment was it that you haven't looked at "that way" before?
Well, kinda but still no. I'm an agnostic atheist. That is, I do not rule out the existance of gods as an impossibility, but lacking any convincing evidence of the contrary, I assume they don't exist. If they do exist, I don't think they are what we've made them out to be, and if gods are as we've made them out to be, then I don't want anything to do with them.
@ilovetogofast88 Perhaps, from an ultimate objective pov, it doesn't matter, but, from my own subjective pov, I'd still like to know... Me, I think the term "God bless ([insert optional subject])" is overrated (and overused) in general, so, yeah...
@ilovetogofast88 Well, you said that there was something I said that you hadn't "looked at that way before"... Or something like that. (Your previous comment has been deleted, so I don't know exactly how you phrased it, but that's the impression I got from it.)
Yes. For numberous reasons, I might add. Most of them don't come down to "I don't really value the blessings of a genocidal deity", either, but take on many different perspectives, so I think I'm somewhat justified in my opinion, too.
I guess I was refering to the part where you said that "in some parts of the world, they know a god exists, but are disappointed in him/her/it and don't want anything to do with that 'god' or have that 'god's' blessings." So I guess I never really looked at the idea that some people think that a god exists but doesn't want to have a so-called "relationship" with that god. I believe that's what you were saying.
@ilovetogofast88 Ah. Yeah, pretty much... Sort of, rejecting the god, I suppose... Though, in hindsight, I should probably have said that such was the matter for certain individuals, (kinda like me,) and I'm not quite sure if there are any "parts of the world" where such is the theological custom, refreshing though it would've been in my eyes.
@GrahamChapman JEHOVAH IS ANOTHER NAME FOR LUCIFER ACCORDING TO MADAME BLAVATSKY. MOST CHRISTIANS(IF NOT ALL OF THEM) DO NOT GIVE A DAMN WHO GOD IS, THEY ARE ACTUALLY SENTIMENTAL DARWINISTS WHO MAKE IT A POINT TO DOT THEIR I'S AND CROSS THEIR T'S. 'JUDAISM NEVER WAS, IS NOT NOW AND NEVER WILL BECOME MONOTHEISTIC".---JORDAN MAXWELL
@countdumas I hate to use memes and the like to express my opinion and thoughts because I think that is submitting to the influence others have upon me, while I endorse individuality, but the quite litterary only thing I can think of upon reading your message is: "Lol wut?" ...primarily because I don't know what it has to do with me, but also because I fail to see your supposed point.

morning...calm the fuc down. most americans do not really believe in god. i dont. well, i dont believe in christianity. back to carlin. he's an ...was an american...and he says it perfectly....pure genious. thanks carlin...fellow american.
GOD FUCKING BLESS whoever watches George Carlin becuz it means u r not brainwashed and are inTelligent enough to understand what a fucked up world we live in. There's no god BTW and if there was I'd worship Carlin. He's white and has a beard....LOL
the only reason they think god is favoring america is so they can justify the killings the their sons in war do because otherwise it would be a sin for a christian to kill but since this is somehow god's nation its ok
"america prays for god to destroy our enemies, are enemies pray for god to destroy us somebodys going to be disappointed, somebodys wasting their fucking time..could it be everyone" -Brilliant
He died on the cross for our sins. He didnt have to do it, but he really cares about everyone, and would like us to accept him in our hearts, in which you would go to heaven. The Bible says it all
I'd like to see every US politician close his speech with "good luck, America" instead of "God Bless America". It would put a whole new perspective on things.

The only lesson to be learned is that people are not diligent and there is no balance between liberty and "group good". When groups are said to have rights, the individual is trampled and ALL rights become privilege or non-existent. There is nothing to balance, you are either free or you aren't.
LordShandor 7 months ago
@jamespeacevern And unless the individual is free, there is no freedom. Individual freedom is always destroyed through the excuse of some group or social good.
Taking away individual freedom is NEVER good, period. Anyone who tries to argue otherwise is either lying or severely delusional.
ALL right are individual.
To suggest group interests can trump individual rights is to suggest that the initiation of force is legitimate.
It isn't.

Renagade4 10 months ago
@Renagade4 Sorry dude, but the entire course and behaviour of your government violates separation of church and state; you live in a theocracy run by psuedo-christians who want to Dominate the Planet militarily. sad for a country created in response to religious bigotry and crushing theocracy in Europe. "Christians" in America ignore the fact that Christ was a radical Socialist; because that fact is very inconvenient if one uses greed and violence to Rule The World on behalf of the 'son of god'.
SmileyGarrish 10 months ago 3
@SmileyGarrish I don't really see the relevance to what I wrote, but I do agree with you on all of your points. However I wouldn't call it "your government." If I owned the government things would be a lot different. :P
Renagade4 10 months ago

We don't have right in America or haven't you been paying attention?

cabbievonbump 10 months ago
@ilovetogofast88 Probably because we are a nation founded on Christian values and not every country in the world believes in the God that we think of. We're not perfect but that shouldn't stop anyone from saying that.
m1ndfr34k117 10 months ago
@m1ndfr34k117
We are a country founded on secular values. If it was founded on Christian values then Christianity would be the official religion and would have been noted in the Constitution. See Article 11 of the Treaty of Tripoli. If God=truth why do you Christians betray him by lying?
CourageHonorLoyalty 10 months ago 2
@CourageHonorLoyalty We are a country founded on a hybrid of them both, however the Founding Fathers were largely Christians. In addition, the Pledge of Allegiance and our Deceleration of Independence both mention God, thus we can surmise that we were founded on a hybrid of them both. However, seeing has how secular values and Christian values are very similar, it's not too far from the truth to use Christian values.
And I think you should look up the definition of lying.
m1ndfr34k117 10 months ago

m1ndfr34k117 8 months ago
@m1ndfr34k117 Go back and figure it out. What do you consider to be Christian values ?
jcane28eatsfatpuss 8 months ago
@jcane28eatsfatpuss Values which are taught in the Christian faith. In addition, I've changed my stance. I no longer agree that we were founded on secular values. We were indeed founded on Christian values. Also, misleading isn't necessarily the same as lying.
m1ndfr34k117 8 months ago
@m1ndfr34k117 Elaborate on your ideas about Christian values and be specific. If you spout Reagan and Bush era Republican propaganda I'll know where this is coming from. Misleading and/or not telling the whole truth is the same as lying, regardless of whatever spin you put on it the result is the same. I would think one who champions Christain values would already know this. The fact that you believe (or have been lead to believe) that America was founded on Christian values does not make it so.
jcane28eatsfatpuss 8 months ago
@jcane28eatsfatpuss Do I really need to? No murder, stealing, etc. Dear God, here we go. Assuming I'm going to "spout...propaganda" that you don't agree with. What about you? Will you spout Obama propaganda? And no, they are not. If I say go left because there's something you want, but I know you should go right, I'm misleading you but not lying to you. See? You're dealing an absolute which is failing. And it's fact. Simply type in "Was the USA Founded as a Christian Nation?" and click 2nd link
m1ndfr34k117 8 months ago

GrahamChapman 9 months ago
@GrahamChapman
It doesn't really matter, my main point is the term "God bless America" is clearly overrated
ilovetogofast88 9 months ago
@ilovetogofast88 Perhaps, from an ultimate objective pov, it doesn't matter, but, from my own subjective pov, I'd still like to know... Me, I think the term "God bless ([insert optional subject])" is overrated (and overused) in general, so, yeah...
GrahamChapman 9 months ago
@GrahamChapman
Wait, what exactly would you like to know? Do you think the term "God bless" in itself is overrated as well?
ilovetogofast88 9 months ago
@ilovetogofast88 Well, you said that there was something I said that you hadn't "looked at that way before"... Or something like that. (Your previous comment has been deleted, so I don't know exactly how you phrased it, but that's the impression I got from it.)
Yes. For numberous reasons, I might add. Most of them don't come down to "I don't really value the blessings of a genocidal deity", either, but take on many different perspectives, so I think I'm somewhat justified in my opinion, too.
GrahamChapman 9 months ago
@GrahamChapman
I believe that's what you were saying.
ilovetogofast88 9 months ago
@ilovetogofast88 Ah. Yeah, pretty much... Sort of, rejecting the god, I suppose... Though, in hindsight, I should probably have said that such was the matter for certain individuals, (kinda like me,) and I'm not quite sure if there are any "parts of the world" where such is the theological custom, refreshing though it would've been in my eyes.
