#64 Rahm's Mandatory Military Service - No To Capitalism

Mandatory military service if used at all should only be used when our nation is severely threatened, for example. Israel requires it, they exist as a nation and are in perpetual warfare and stalemates with practically the entire Middle East. Their survival is constantly threatened, an attack could come at any time any where, so its good that every man and woman knows how to fight and how to defend themselves. I think though we should have a 2 year service here.

I'm past the age group that would be required to serve. however i would defend thier right to freedom and the freedom of choice i believe that they're entitled to when it comes to servitude. Servitude to a country must be a free choice otherwise it is not servitude it is slavery and that i shall not permit. This country will burn to the ground by my own hand if this were to occur.

I serve in the military and I refuse to share a foxhole with the sort of people who would need to be drafted.

Something tells me he will create a paramilitary org. Ethnic nationalists and radical leftists could easily hijack what he has proposed. For this reason I think mandatory service to be a bad idea.

There are 17 lawsuits in 9 states suing Obama on the legimacy of his birth certificate. NJ Supreme court is hearing a case Dec. 5.

I'd agree with you on the bailout of certain industries being a bad idea in a purely capitalist system. Unfortunately if any one of the big three auto makers collapsed, it would have a devestating effect on the North American economies as a whole.....just too many jobs either directly or indirectly linked to these companies. So how do you help these companies, without shovelling money at the guys (managers and CEOs) who got them in this predicament in the first place.....???

I'd venture to say that if they let them fail - someone else would buy them up and rehire workers - nothing is created or destroyed, its not a zero sum game. We have been propping these industries up for far too long - if they no longer viable we should let them go - and let the employees do something else. We may have some smaller companies surface with nimbler management - maybe there would be some true innovation finally.

OK, the Rahm Emanuel clip you are elluding to is two years old....most politicians I've ever seen can change their opinion at the drop of a hat....whatever will get them further ahead.....just look at John McCain throughout the last two years for a good example of that....lol

As to the automakers. We are in dire straights. Never in history, as far as I can recall, has this happened before. There was no Chinese manufacturing. 98 percent of manufactured goods were made in the US. I don't like it. But if we let the auto industry go who will fill the void, China?

As to the west wing, the media sets the agenda. I don't like it but that's the way its been for many years, ever since the Golden Age of Television ended. How many people are sitting in front of the television at any given time? In the early 60s there was a newscast at 10pm every night on one channel for five minutes. How many news casts now? 24 hrs a day times 20. The news media has Americans eating off their plate 24/7.

Hello, You are right about ranting. So what is so bad about mandatory service? It didn't kill me. I was drafted into the military during the Vietnam years, so what. And if you are looking at reality this world is becoming very dangerous. I am sorry that it is, but that is the way it is. The Boy Scouts have a motto; "Be Prepared". It's a good motto.

knight, What is so bad about mandatory service? Nothing is wrong with the draft, but being drafted into a civilian army is different. Why do we need a civilian army? Sounds pretty scary to me. Is the civilian army going to keep civilian's in order? If they come to take my guns, somebody is going to be in trouble and it's not gonna be me. You'd better open up your eyes and look at the reality of Obama is trying to do.
