Japan had been isolationist and had allowed themselves to slip into a state of being unable to protect themselves from other nations, America, The British Empire, Spain and Portugal come to mind, there may have been others. Japan had been isolationist and had allowed themselves to slip into a state of being unable to protect themselves from other nations, America, The British Empire, Spain and Portugal come to mind, there may have been others. In any event, Perry allowed them to see they were at a gross disadvantage on several fronts and they initiated change from within. Unfortunately, a lot of their change was militarily, WWII!

@mouse1842 Not bugging. He possibly had an influence. Japan, until 1968, was ruled by war lords, diamyo, and at times by a shogun, conquering war lord, and all were samurai. For centuries all they knew was fight, fight, fight. The samurai were very high spirited and cared little about dieing for a worthy cause. They thought they could not be beaten and that spirit carried itself into their culture. because they had been heavily steeped in military traditions for centuries, it could not be see #2

Like for instance what's the chances of meeting someone who thinks exactly like that in modern day . @mouse1842 I think you may mean Toyotomi and he was a war lord also. As I remember, he was instrumental in unifying Japan at some time but I don't know much about it. I guess the details bore me but the nature of the culture fascinates me to a degree. Japanese culture was, and is, more about the group than the individual whereas the west is more selfish by far. That is exactly what is wrong with America right now and especially in the government. Have you seen Hell in the Pacific?

I have not a clue why you decided to relate this song to the movie. I mean, great song and great movie. It's like mixing two good things and expecting something awesome out of it, except it turned out to be really stupid and irrelevant.
