With that being said. You have to understand that the audience mostly enjoys the 'Effect'.
The magician enjoys the method + reaction to effect. Much like K3K mentioned below.
When you pull off a trick that is a bit more challenging in method, you end on almost the same wonder as your audience does, happy you pulled it off. Its a magical feeling.
When a simple DL can have you look like david blaine. Assuming the magician didn't reflect their own bordem onto the audience.
Your example at 5:25 about a heckler grabbing cards is mostly poor decision making from the magician. In that they should have somewhat of a read on the audience, and shouldn't be performing tricks with heavy 'dead air' , upclose and in a distance where such a thing can happen.
I agree that simple isn't always the best, some effects and tricks are taken to new levels when difficulty is added. I also believe every magician should have some tricks that flex thier skills.
Heres what i think, if it matters. I think that although the method does not effect the spectators reaction, to an extent, the method effects the magicians opinion on the tick. If the method is difficult, or complex, it gives something to practice. I personally enjoy performing a trick if it is more difficult. For instance a transposition could be easily achieved with a duplicate but that holds no glamour for the magician. I enjoy feeling skilled and performing a trick like that takes that away
continued:so what we need is simplicity, efficiency and motivation.and I feel like alot of your moves violate against alot of these "rules".you seem to be creating variations for variation sake, which in my opinion is wrong if it doesn't add anything to the effect.also I don't think spectators get bored with the same handlings and therefore we need variations.how many laymen actually watch so much card magic that they would notice that?thats thinking too much as a magician
@Matzes As I stated in the video (I think I don't remember), I don't create a move or effect just because it looks difficult and pretty and that's why I think it's cool to add it. There are so many effects out there which I can name that are variations of classic plots that are actually quite complicated, and professional magicians actually perform that material. I don't think we should be creating magic with the sole mentality of simplicity and efficiency.
@d090509 cont: If everything was meant to be in its simplest and most efficient form, everyone would be doing the standard sandwich and transposition tricks that David Blaine does on the street. Why do many professional magicians even bother to create variations that are more complicated? But then again, I feel that this is a personal opinion, and everyone creates their own magic differently.
you might have misunderstood the part about "the audience doesn't care" what was meant by that is : the audience doesn't care about the METHOD...obviously,since they don't (shouldn't) know the method, they don't care about it. so what does that mean for us? we need to make the method as simple and efficient as possible to prevent the method to be detected or even suspected. the other point you were making is about Motivation. yes,it makes no sense to pick up the box only to put it down again.
Hey, are you not going to upload the 2 remaining videos for your paper rhapsodies project?
