The more I watch Mayuko Kamio, the more I grow to love her performances. She plays so perfectly and carefully and seems to just lightly caress the violin with her bow as she plays. Amazing that like Sarah Chang , she often just plays with her eyes shut as if in an a trance of emotions and feelings .
You in your own words eg ' As a professional Violinist ' and you cant even spell the name of the composer of this magical music eg ..... ' The Chaikovsky competition ' !!
The most common and accepted spelling of his name all over the world and also on this video is Tchaikovsky. I have never seen it spelt anywere as Chaikovsky unless its a spelling mistake. Leaving that point of discussion behind what a wonderful composer he was and we are so lucky that we can watch all these fine musicians playing his music for free on youtube. I listen to this piece since very young often, can play it in my head myself. This interpretation is very harmonic with my imagination of th piece - with even more wonderfully elaborated details. Great pleasure!
@TheViolinmaniac You're surprised? 40 third- or even fourth-rate violinists that would never get even close to such skill on the violin, simply couldn't cope with their jealousy and thumbed her down. It just happens. As for Miss Kamio, she's simply stunning.
@MrChipMaplewood i doubt the dislikes come from unhappy violinsts, if anything its amateur listeners who think they can judge any top-rate violinist. so pls don't bag on the lower-rate violinists who strive to be like this performer thanks. i have students who look up to these people and were unhappy with ur comment. . .

its because of this piece why i started to play the violin, i love this piece so much, when im alone and everything is quite i hear this inside my head, Tchaikovsky is the best composer for me...very moving, profound and fantastic
Oh...she is simply great !!! I used to listen to this piece when I was very young. My father loved Opera but then he bought lots of Classical Music(Long Play Records) at that era of 60. I love violin and I love M.Kamio ! She played so good !!! Expression on her face revealed and even I got so engrossed !!!
@TheViolinmaniac You are absolutely right, Even I, an amateur tuba player can recognize her genius! This has become one of my favorite interpretations of this piece.
My first exposure to Tchaikovsky's was the 'Swam Lake' when I was around 5 yrs or so through my father and grandfather(my mum's father an Italian descendant). Watching this Mayuko Kamio an excellent Violinist playing this Violin Concerto had my goose bumps with ecstasy... with sweet memories flipping back the pages. Thanks paanyax !
After listening to many great violinist, I feel compelled to come back to Mayuko Kamio san and listen to her wonderful performance and beautiful sound. And Japan Philharmonic Orchestra is precise, dramatic and delicate where it needs to be. This is just one great performance !
@saaawa I can make no claim to being Russian, but I hope I appreciate Russian culture, history, excellences and faults - and I put 'faults' last, please note. Tchaikovsky is one of the greats of all time at his best, and this piece is Tchaikovsky at his best.
Symphonies, orchestra suites, concertos, sonatas and operas--Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky covered all of these genres for his peerless works. He remains a great icon of classical music. His melodious melody mesmerizes the audience and heals us.
In a way, this is played - by Japanese soloist, conductor, and orchestra (and yes, if some are not quite Japanese, or I missed a few, I apologize! it's a general fact and my true impression) - like 'alien ceremonial music'... it lacks a trifle of the usual esprit of the renditions I've heard... BUT, being so thoroughly different, and quite good in technical aspects, it is a worthwhile listen.
The soloist's phrasing may be at fault, slightly, here and there... but I can't swear to it.
Another outstanding girl violinist from Japan. They just keep coming. If you wonder why all girls, let me tell you. They can live off their parents while boys can't.

her facial expressions are like she's gonna die after playing the piece, i know she is 100% into the music to have these expressions, but a real great violinist usually have expressions that make you feel like they can finish the piece effortlessly, like "everything's fine mate, don't worry". but anyway, she plays good music=]
@simonwongyh Sorry - that is a rather irrelevant and tasteless comment. Pity you cannot appreciate her wonderful artistry enough to understand her facial expressions.
Yes I have seen him playing this piece of music and to me he plays it too fast .I prefer hearing it played slower for the full richness and beauty of this fabulous music to come through. I like Sarah Changs version and met her at the Barbican this year, she is such a nice person.
Akiko Suwanai winner of the 1990 Tchaikovsky prize, her version is good as well as many others .I go to many Concerts and prefer seeing classical music live than recordings.
Yes wonderful piece by Tchaikovsky,by the way the heifetz video on youtube of him playing this music is from an old film called ''Carnegie Hall' and It had time limitations on it,so the music was edited to make it shorter .The film was a box office flop and the company went Bankrupt ,the rights to the film were taken over by the Bank .
I listened to a proper recording a few years ago that one of my freinds had one of Heifetz playing this and it sounded far nicer to me !!
I should imagine that there is a big choice on the intertnet of his recordings if you want them and are persistant, you may even get the film if you look round !!
This is a very nice version by Mayuko Kamio.
All these fine artists are amazing and I hate it when certain people abuse them on youtube, especially the racist comments about some of the Oriental musicians such as Sarah Chang.
Hope to see Akiko Suwanai live later this year, she will be performing in france and london.
Verdaderamente bello. No hay palabras para expresar el sentimiento por la obra y la excelente interpretación, la chica, el director y la orquesta. Oh Dios¡ gracias por todos estos genios.
A young violinist called Josef Kotek helped Tchaikovsky with technical advice while he was writing this concerto. Tchaikovsky, susceptible and sentimental as always, responded by falling in love with him. His nickname for Kotek was "Soso Kotik" (Joe the Tom-cat), so it sounds as though they had some fun together. Which is good.
I love the facial expressions and body movement. Some people have alot of passion and energy and need to move their bodies to properly express thier emotion and play properly. It allows them to play better. Not everyone is like this though. Some people play better still and body movement distracts them. Nonetheless this is the best version of this piece I have heard. I love both the soloist and the conducting. A very excellent Orchestra.
Ofcourse it's a great performance but I'm so much falling in love with Tchaikovsky. How did he compose such a music, such a beautiful piece.I always under appreciate him comparing with other composers but this one change my mind absolutely..what a wonderful world we live in..
Another brilliant Oriental musician to watch !! wonderfull played by Mayuko Kamio and with such feeling !!
there are so many fine artists on youtube playing this piece we are so lucky to hear them ,I like Sarah Chang the most but they are all so special,Silvia Marcovici ,Midori Goto etc .
her emotion has literally poured from her violin through youtube and into my heart. i dont even like Tchaikovsky much. but this is so excellent ... its like he was meant to write it for her. brava!
if ur asking cuz im picky about pitches, i never had a korean teacher. my style is more russian and italian. when u r a musician spending hours and hours tryin to get a few bars in tune, a little off pitches here and there kinda gets on ur nerves.
I like the slower-than-normal tempo she takes at this... it lets the dynamics and emotions get a chance to speak out and live, whereas many of the faster recordings are simply too fast to let the listener feel the full effect of crescendos and the like.
Why do classical performers get criticised for their facial expressions, which are due to concentration, when pop singers pull the most ridiculous faces imagineable, just as part of their act, and nobody says anything?
It's actually the first time I heard facial expression being criticized in classical music. Never thought much of it, I took it as a given. I guess it's strange for the wider public who aren't used to it. I can kind of understand that.
This is purity of tone and perfection--you are an idiot. Listen to your Uncle Junior and learn something..Uncle Junior knows music. If you listen you might learn a tenth of my knowledge.
Not to mention the rest, right at the intro, the dominant 7th chord (A C# E G) is already out of tune (shifted too high to the 3rd position, ending up with the rest all sharp). Don't try to impose your ideas on others when you don't even know the piece or the instrument. I didn't say she is a bad violinist though, for no bad players can be at the top in those competitions.
totemo kakkoii. So very cool. The tones and pitch of the instrument, absolutely gorgeous. Makes me wish I had the chance more things like this LIVE. Kudos to the uploader to the great sound quality.

You do realise that "Tchaikovsky" or "Tschaikovsky", or what else there is, are technically wrong too?
Russians write in cyrillic, so technically the only correct spelling is "Чайко́вский".

My guess is you are Korean?

yes. y do u ask?
TimChoFsho 2 years ago
Just a lucky guess.
ssatrofma 2 years ago
if ur asking cuz im picky about pitches, i never had a korean teacher. my style is more russian and italian. when u r a musician spending hours and hours tryin to get a few bars in tune, a little off pitches here and there kinda gets on ur nerves.

Powerful, savoury and full of such conviction. I feel that this is the way this concerto was meant to be played.

look at all the women in the orchestra! I suppose the Japanese are ahead of the U.S. in that respect...

She plays great ...
Only one thing I concerned,
When she played, her face looks got hurt..?!
Too much focus to release the face?

bravo!

I like the slower-than-normal tempo she takes at this... it lets the dynamics and emotions get a chance to speak out and live, whereas many of the faster recordings are simply too fast to let the listener feel the full effect of crescendos and the like.

A perfect performance--pure intonation! What a wonderful violinist! Absolutely amazing!!!! Uncle Junior knows perfection-listen and learn!

Why do classical performers get criticised for their facial expressions, which are due to concentration, when pop singers pull the most ridiculous faces imagineable, just as part of their act, and nobody says anything?
LadyShirl 2 years ago 33
It's actually the first time I heard facial expression being criticized in classical music. Never thought much of it, I took it as a given. I guess it's strange for the wider public who aren't used to it. I can kind of understand that.

no offense to any of her fans but intonation needs work.
Zacmosai 3 years ago
Intonation here isn't the worst. Obviously, it's nowhere near the level of intonation that Hilary Hahn has but it's not bat at all.

This is purity of tone and perfection--you are an idiot. Listen to your Uncle Junior and learn something..Uncle Junior knows music. If you listen you might learn a tenth of my knowledge.

To UnclJuniorSuprano:
Not to mention the rest, right at the intro, the dominant 7th chord (A C# E G) is already out of tune (shifted too high to the 3rd position, ending up with the rest all sharp). Don't try to impose your ideas on others when you don't even know the piece or the instrument. I didn't say she is a bad violinist though, for no bad players can be at the top in those competitions.
