Fermina Daza es una idiota. Separada cruelmente del hombre que realmente la amaba, cuando finalmente se reencuentran, lo echa sin explicación. Luego Juvenal Urbino, doctor cosmopolita y altanero, la ve desnuda por consulta médica, y la desposa sin siquiera noviazgo. Florentino Ariza estuvo tanto tiempo enamorado de ella, que ya nada sintió por otra mujer. Tuvo que esperar la muerte de ese maldito doctor para por fin estar con ella. Una historia triste y cruel, pero brillante por su autor.
