I remember buying The Pleasure Principle as a kid and being absolutely blown away! Id never heard anything like Gary Numan. Its funny i remember reading reviews of his albums and they were never good! 1 guy called his music 4 chords of repetitive moronic noise! The critics just didnt get Gary Numans music in 1979! The fans got it though! Gary Numan was brilliant!
@jdu6 - yes! see him when you can!! last year he was in NY and Rasputina opened - wanted to see that show - I'm in SF; we had no opening act, just a full on Gary show - really amazing. check his website for tour info; Nustreet.uk!!
Have you ever wondered how many times you have listened to this song? Is it really 30 years old....man this song is pure Numan...probably the greatest song he ever wrote. I never get tired of it. Thank you for posting this version...the best I have heard!
Is it me, or dot he people in the crowd not seem to know how to react to the song? Should they give devil horns? Should they *gasp!* light a lighter? Should they crowd surf? Slam dance? Mosh? Cry? Call their parents?
I appreciate where you are coming from, but what i was getting at, is the fact that this version is very much like Rammstein already. It's a similar thing with Depeche Mode these days - much darker and more gothic than the early days (check out Rammstein's version of 'Stripped'. Awesome!!) I think Rammstein would do this song really well! There is more than enough room for good music, irrespective of who, or what... (:o)
The big difference between Gary Numan from 1979 to the early 1980s to recent years is that Gary Numan is older and better now than he was back than. He looks like he is having more fun performing live concerts than he did when he was younger. Maybe shyness and not sure what will follow with fame had to do with it. This 2006 live version of Down In The Park sounds like an improvement over what he did in 1979.
Enjoy the show! Gary Numan will probably sound better than he did in the late 1970s. My apologizes for my ignorance but, what is aspergers? Who knows. I might have it too.
Btw, although i have never been diagnosed with asperger's syndrome, i must admit that i'm not a great fan of being in crowds either, so i take my hat off to you for doing just that and going to see Gary next month!! Enjoy! (:o) I've thought about it too, having never seen him live before even tho i have been a big fan for 30 years. God, i'm OLD! Lol... (:o)
Haha. :P I'm going with my dad, who's saying pretty much the same stuff xD. I cannot wait though. I can only hope he plays some of the classics aswell as pleasure principal
It is the best thing he did. Cars is a classic song :D I think that if he does it all and does it right it'd be just as good as the good ol days :P. I went ta see magazine in February, they were good too.
Nice one! I have never seen Magazine in the flesh, although i did see them recently on Later... With Jools Holland. Good ol' Howard Devoto! I think Gary's gig will surpass the 'good ol' days'. All that experience he has now! He can't fail. Although 'Cars' has been played to death a bit over the last thirty years, you're right - it IS a classic song... (:o)
@MissClockworkHeart As good as the boosh are, I have been a life long (even though that life has only been 19 years) fan of Numan, thanks to my mother.
Omg, I saw him live in London on July 5th. And I swear to God it was the most AMAZING thing I've ever seen. I was right up the front, between the 1st and 2nd row. When the intro for this came on I was like "YEAAAAHHHHHH" lol xD it was so awesome, bein right next to the speakers
This is one of my favourite songs from the 80s, closely followed by "New Dawn Fades" from Joy Division, "Shout" from Tears for Fears, "How Soon is Now" from The Smiths, & "Going Under" from Devo. I've heard other versions of this song from other artists, but they were never as good as the original. Numan tops himself here. Totally awesome. So awesome, in fact, that I'm literally envious of those in the audience. It's not enough to hear this song. One must feel it.
While true that this song from the "Replicas" album came out in 1979, the music of Gary Numan was a major defining factor of the 80's, and by 80s I mean the feel of that decade. One can hardly call his work typical 70s, unlike for instance, Kool and the Gang's "Jungle Boogie". Search as you will, you won't find "Down in the Park" on a 70's compilation, save for an obscure independent collection, and even that is doubtful.

Rammstein should cover this!!! \m/ (:o)
klistarf 2 years ago
They really shouldn't. I like it as it is. I don't need some freakin metal version done. And If I did it wouldn't be Rammstein.
Just cause Gary Numan did some industrial doesn't mean he should be copied by cheap imitators.
He started as synthpop, personally he should go back to it.

He has aspergers, which accounts for why some called him standoffish and the shyness. I have it too - I don't enjoy being in crowds.
I'm going to see him in november. I cannot wait!

I saw that too. He made me laugh - he's so middle class. Not that it's abad thing but it was rather funny! :P
At the gig he wore a pink suit, wasn't the best choise. It was an ace gig though!
Cars has been played to death, and the boosh seemed to have enlightened my generation to the epicness of the Numan :P
