@ PandaMishima Shorty was Popeye's BEST friend next to Wellington J. Wimpy. Though he did more harm than good in trying to help Popeye, I believe Shorty would never, EVER backstab Popeye. Besides, Olive is just simply NOT Shorty's type!!
@andoc and popeye had NO game!! spinach wasnt going to help tap that in this picture. shorty had ALL the game..LOL! in real life Shorty(and many others) wouldve tore it up:)
Dorothy Lamour was all over the Silver Screen in the 40s and 50s, particularly with Bob Hope and Bing Crosby in the "ROAD" pictures. She was a singer and dancer famous for her trademark Sarong outfits. The tune playing with her picture is Moonlight Becomes You from "The Road to Morocco." Oddly, this tune wound up in Star Trek: First Contact
You know, this is probably one of the only cartoons where popeye gets back at olive. Anyone know the names of any other cartoons that does so (besides nearlyweds).
@swordaxe4U Two during the Fleischer years in Miami -- "Females is Fickle" (Olive gets dunked in the water after letting the goldfish Popeye rescued go free) and "I'll Never Crow Again" (Popeye finally solves his problem with both Olive's ridicule and the wise-guy birds by tying her up in the cornfield as the scarecrow).
If Shorty is gay why does have a picture of a gorgeous pin up girl beside his bed,I think its funny though at the end when he nearly gets sick fom having to look at pictures of Olive.
One last shot popeye got tired of shorty n shot him in the furance remember that but cartoon network cut that out.....cause i remember see on boomrang .....why was that censored
@JPPT1974 NO POPEYE WASNT!!! after shorty kissed olive, she wanted him. she didnt give a damn about Popeye no more. i wouldve done the same thing except i wouldnt have thrown her in a washer.
The Famous Studio Popeye cartoons never really advanced the art form, but they did have their moments - check out the scene change at 1:58, and the very pronounced 'limited animation' at 5:32.
Plus, this one is funny as all get-out. That's Arnold Stang playing Shorty, isn't it?
Jack Mercer does both Popeye and Shorty here. Stang did Shortly only in the last cartoon, "Moving Aweigh", after the studio had been completely moved back to New York (this cartoon was started when Famous was still located in Miami).
@Cresantstar I don't know if that's why she didn't do anymore voiceover work. The main reason she was replaced as Olive Oyl,was that the cartoon studio was relocated back to New York from Miami, and Mae Questal, who did not move to Miami, was available to do the voice again.
can somebody find the tops at the big top and were on our way to rio in the original intro and outro version. i saw the tops at the big top original on boomerang when they had the popeye show and it was BEAUTIFUL!!! the outro was nice too. i loved all the old cartoons because they would talk to the audience(see: the hungry goat). there was no tv and you would have to go to the movies to watch everything, including cartoons.
i'm 40 now and i've been watching popeye cartoons(aap sleeve)since the age of 10(1978) this is the first time i've seen this cartoon in the original intro and outro. on tv it shows the aap sleeve at the beginning and end. they(aap) butchered the b/w and color popeye cartoons with that aap logo. i want to see all the popeye cartoons with the paramount logos intro and outro but that will never happen. if anybody can find the tops of the big top in its entirety with the original intro and outro
This was the second Popeye cartoon to be released in Technicolor by Famous/Paramount, in December 1943; the pin-ups on the wall against Shorty's hammock are those of Paramount's #1 "sex symbol" {to military forces at the time}, Dorothy "Sarong" Lamour...this was Margie Hines' final vocal appearance as Olive- when Famous' animated facilities moved back to New York [from Miami] by early '44, Mae Questel resumed being her voice...
It also appears to be one of the last Famous cartoons to have sound by Western Electric, which was on the Florida-produced 'toons following Max Fleischer's move there; by the time Famous relocated to New York, they switched to the RCA sound system. It was also notable that this 'toon didn't have any musical director's credit (I presume Winston Sharples led the baton here?).
I like how Popeye saved all those dishes and then dropped and broke them to save one and Olive hits him with it. So funny! What if he had let that dish break and gave the rest to Olive, do you think she would have hit him with all the others? I know that sounds ridiculous.
Ah, but that one dish was plastic, and therefore unbreakable--notice how it stayed intact when Olive bopped him with it? Of course if she'd hit him with all of the others the results, including the glue, would be exactly the same!
The part on 1:38 is really weird

always wondered what exactly Popeye saw in Olive. Love the bit where Shorty blows his nose on the Popeye handkerchief

Very interesting departure for a Popeye cartoon!
I remember this as a kid, but didn't appreciate how oddly different this was:
1) No Spinach
2) No Bluto
3) He finally realizes that Olive isn't worth it anymore!
Great cartoon, thanks for posting this!

When I was 6, the sight of Olive playing a seductive vamp to Shorty, was so out of character that it scared me.

NOTE:
The name of the girl in the photo is Dorothy Lamour!!!!!!!
She appeared in Creepshow 2 as the wife of George Kennedy's character in the story "Old Chief Wood'nhead".

That "Shorty" is actually Woody Allen!!!
He is short, he use nerdy glasses, he is a lover-boy and he likes hot girls instead of ugly thin ones.
Besides, this is what Woody Allen would do for Popeye.

yes this seems to be margie hines last role as betty boop.
no idea why she quit, she sort of dissapeared from voice acting even though she had been doing it since 1930.
do you think its becuse she & jack mercer got a divorce?

But she says 'What a man!' with Popeye's voice! Note how Famous Studios are using Olive's old design too.
Granitoons 3 years ago
They continued using the old design until after 1946. She was modernized somewhat in "Mess Production" (1945).

It was Sharples. He and Sammy Timberg shared music director duties until about 1946, when Sharples took over on all the cartoons.
