I don't think these are river fish, they look to be Malawi Cichlids (although they video is a bit poor quality but from the shape and colours I would say so). If that is the case, then Malawi Cichlids do group together in this way when people are stood in front of the tank (they think they are going to be fed!). I'd like to see this in perspective really before making judgement. I'm sure the filtration can handle the bioload fine but whether it's ethical or not is a different matter.
@electrogear yes that was the type of fish, I just couldn't recall off the top of my head what the type was, so "river fish" was just a generic term I used.
What an amazing tank! I would love to go there and watch it. And although many would criticize the overcrowding, I don't see any harm since the fish are pretty "prosperous" :) Keeping such a tank at home would require an impossible amount of labor!
Well, I been to that tank as well and have personally talked to some of those fish. They save that overall the staff is very courteous and the tank space is fine except for holidays when relatives are in town.
this is far from beautiful. this zoo has no idea what they are doing with fish. the staff's ignorance has them blind from the way the fish should be kept. and its not just this exhibit, all the tanks ive seen are in peril, every tank is the same. damn shame.
First of all, you can't really tell how BIG the tank is based on how crowded it is - because it is a BIG DEEP tank and the fish themselves were choosing to crowd around like they did. I didn't film the areas with very little fish because, obviously, seeing this many fish together was more mesmerizing.
Are you familiar with exactly which fish species are in this tank and their natural environment? Because I find it near IMPOSSIBLE to believe that a zoo that has been active for more than 30 years would get it wrong. Your snap judgements are not welcome here unless you can back them up with proof that the zoo has acted in error.
They were replicating a very specific river system which was very small and I find it hard to believe that a zoo, with so many biologists and zoologists on hand, would overstock the tank beyond what is present naturally.
I have personally stood in front of this tank before and i found it was very deep and very wide tank. about the size of a deep swimming pool. Maybe wider. This tank, given that enough filtration was put on it, it was not over stocked.
