i know weimar culture was popular in berlin and vienna i had no idea it was popular in poland, can anyone tell me where this tune comes from ? what country, it has the weimar germanic drawl that i like
It's taken me months to get back to my Yahoo account. Yes, dear friend, let's all do our part in keeping Pola's memory alive! My part will be oil paintings inspired by the Art Déco portraits of the incomparable Tamara de Lempitska. Some of my Pola photos are rather low resolution; could I turn to you for upgrading them enough for oil paintings?? Mme Negri is the most mesmerizing of all the singing stars, her soul captures you completely and never lets go. Pola is unique, Pola is forever!
I just love the way she does this. Have you watched the clip of her singing this? WOW! I mean especially for a guy,I'd say it'd be hard to resist her,but then again,I'm not a guy.Even as a woman though,I say she's really sexy.
I just saw the movie last night. Very nice and she sings it better in English on stage. I wish her leading man had been someone a bit more romantic than Basil Rathbone -- and according to her autobiography she did too!
Ah, what loveliness and elegance exudes from these classics. What characters and drama... on the screen and off of it. Much more interesting than what most of those who are paraded through the tabloids today manage. I love the lilting emotion of this piece. Brilliant. Thank you!
Oh boy! This is where Edith Piaf got it all from! Just listen to "Mon Légionnaire" - it could have been sung by Pola Negri exactly like that! Madame Negri is the great forerunner, she is a phenomenon!! Please all of you YouTube fans, do your utmost to keep Pola Negri's memory alive. She is so outstanding and she belongs to all times forever.
I have to continue my comments to 240252. I have lots and lots of Swedish movie and theatre magazines from the '20s and all of the critics found Pola's performances outstanding, so sensitive and captivating and magic and charming - and let me tell you they wrote shit about most of the popular actresses of the '20s. I've seen some of her movies, and she is awesome!! The Swedish radio has revealed to me what a unique singer she is, and I am so grateful to Youtube for letting me discover more!
Dear 240252, I am appalled at your version of history. There was no Eastern Europe those days, Poland was in the centre of Europe, widely respected and admired for its outstanding contributions to science, literature music and painting! Pola was no poor girl who came to Hollywood without nothing, she was a huge STAR in Europe and arrived in Hollywood like a princess! So did Merle Oberon, so Pola wasn't alone. She was considered the greatest actress of the silent era, extremely accomplished!
Thanks that you remember the item 'Pola Negri @ Rudolph Valentino'. She recorded Notturno once and only in German language - both for the film and for the record.
This song and the visual is exquisite. Pola was a genius at her craft. I'm sure she enchanted her audience each time she sang and above all she was Polish.
I wonder... what the men in the 30's thought of that cover of Paradise. Goodnight moon and dobra noc Grzegorz.:)
I had no idea she could sing so beautifully.

she was the valentinos lover is that true?
TheRexmoon 2 years ago
True, Negri is not well known for her singing, but she pulls this off with the Pathos, Emotion, (Especially her French)
and underlying sensuality that she exudes thru this recording. I can certainly see what Valentino saw in her....Wow!
