I worked at the pier through high school running rides etc. Myself,Paul Resnack(that Resnicks you refer to) and a handful of others were surfing it practically alone,Dora didn't show up until some time later.Never more that 6-8 friends as the crowd. This was'62-'73 before those z-boys took over.I was already gone to HI.by then. Also the north side held big southswells in the summer.
watch my video "Is John Severson my Father" part 1 and part 2 to see how I learned that my father might be one of the biggest names in surf media history and how he responded to my request for the truth
Serious legend video. That surf spot is gone. I have a friend who showed me spots I never surfed and couldn't believe it was good! 2nd st Hermosa and the Venice jetty area and POP had lefts that piped for two years back in 1995-1996! Now there's garbage ever since. And I thought it was like that all the time. Same with 30th street, it used to break like El Porto back in 1991-2 but had 1/10th the El Porto crowd.
he was (perelta) was contracted for a minute to do a doc on dora (they had a meeting or two)-it fell thru hey, by the way eat a dick man Whys everybody always trying to hate on the S.P
Usually surfing the Seal Beach HB area I didn't get to the bu until I was 16 & had a car in 67 - I was hooked on the place. Anybody remember this "swastika" board? It was on the bottom of his board and you could see it on his bottom turns. He's the one who mentioned "resnecks" the old POP bubble ride reef under the pier in a magazine. He was a gentleman in the water - Took off in front of a lot of people and snaked a few - but never Micky he was their - he raised the respect level
Dora was so awesome. The way he just glides through those dangerous pilings is so cool. That board is short, but not a shortboard. But who cares. He was into style...not shredding.
Da Man-Da Cat-Glad I saw him in action-He was The Best-everybody when I was a kid in the early 60's all Wanted to surf as smooth & into the flow & one with the mystic sea as him & as hip & cool.
Great stuff. I think the date is wrong, though. I remember some of this footage was used in a Hal Jepson movie that came out before 74, if my memory is correct. Anyone remember what film it was and its release date?
Knowing Mickey and having watched him surf both Malibu and Rincon, he looks like he is having an absolute blast at Dogtown. His style, speed, footwork and absolute knowledge of waves is really something to watch. Classic footage!

@TheGreatCorneliuski I remember going to POP as a kid in the late 50's before it burned down. I know right where that spot "Resnicks" was.

That cunt Peralta makes NO reference to Dora in either Dogtown and Z Boys or Riding Giants. Why???

Is this the pier from the dogtown & zboys doco? Is there still a wave here?
nighthawk2075 2 years ago
Yes, it's the same pier. Watch the Dogtown and Z Boys documentary to get the whole story about POP.

The most vivid memory I have of him was...DO NOT get in this mans way when it came to whose wave it was!
RIP Cat.
I will never forget Mickey Dora.

That's the first video footage I've seen of Mickey on a short board, he's really moving on that inside section. A style God like no other. RIP.
