Love Dr Baker. He looks like a sheriff with his gun.And love other contests when Charles and other men have to chop some logs. But Dr baker is the funniest of them all. He's priceless "Gentlemen,on your marks, get set"then the gun is shot.
Does anyone know when this episode was filmed? I know when it aired on television (May 1975), but does anyone know the filming dates? I'm asking because I saw a gap in the airing dates during the first season. This episode is the Season 1 finale, but it didn't air until May (almost two months after the previous episode). I'm not sure, but I'm thinking the unusual delay might have been related to the death of Melissa Gilbert's father in Feb. of that same year. If anyone knows, please share! :)
When Katherine MacGregor fell after the three-legged race, she was laughing while on the ground. I don't think that fall was scripted. Does anyone know?
@Tjune84 I don't think that fall could have been scripted because Katherine really took a tumble. It looked like it really hurt. I mean, she hit the ground pretty hard, and both Nels and the doc look pretty surprised by it (seemingly moreso than what would have been scripted). I don't know though. It's funny anyway. :)
Man, I hate that woman!! She makes Charles feel guilty, and because of that, Charles goes easy on the old man! There was no point of the woman to start crying about it too. -_-
@linkaqt1 Why? I don't think it was bad, though I wouldn't have done it myself. She loves her husband, and didn't want him to lose his pride. I don't blame her. While the old man needs to prove himself by winning a chopping contest, Charles doesn't have any need to prove himself. It was much more important to the old man than to Charles. I think Charles was actually competing for the wrong reasons to begin with. This just gave him the opportunity to realize it. He's a bigger person for it too.
its funny as a child i watched Bonanza with my dad little house on the prairie with my mom and highway to heaven with my grandma out of those films i loved little joe charles and jonathan the most i never realized they were the same man untill later on in life---- he's bleeding at 6:06 on his hand

On another note: Charles is sending major mixed messages to Laura in this episode. Earlier in this episode, he moralizes about how 'winning isn't everything,' what's more important is to take part, but then in this scene, he praises her for saying "I know you're gonna win, pa." What's his issue? lol
@monkeydashley I think it makes perfect sense that they wrote the episode that way. It goes to show how a person can know right from wrong, then forget when they're caught up in the heat of the moment. I think Charles gets a reality check when the old woman tells him about her husband. Suddenly, he remembers that winning the contest isn't the most important thing in the world. I actually like the way they did it because it shows that even Pa can be wrong sometimes. :)
Some major questions here: First why would the old man compete in the second heat of the chopping contest when he already won the first heat? He shoulda rested up and sat out the second heat. Secondly where does Laura get off telling Nellie that she's gonna win this contest or that contest when she and her sister got smoked in each of the contests they entered? THIRDLEY and most important: How did Charles go home and clean up so quick after the tug of war contest? He couldnt go home that quick
@iolanik didn't you hear the judge just before the chopping contest ensued? He said, "The winner of the first heat and the winner of the second heat will compete against each other" to win the overall race. So, the old man HAD to compete in the second heat in order to square off against Charles.
The moment when Charlie turns around....
Dont listen to her Charlie! It's just a tactic!

Laura quit trying to show off and gloat about winning! It's not everything and good sportsmanship is what really matters.

I think it's great that the Ingalls' family didn't win everything, I mean it's more realistic this way.
