I always thought Porkins was just an extra in the film. However, it turns out that Jek Porkins in accordance with the Star Wars story line was recruited by the Rebels because of his excellent straffing and piloting skills. @keonisan In the books they have there force field bubble things that can keep them alive in space for a few hours. That's what all the stuff on the front of their suits does. In post-movie "We have to come up with explanations for all this stuff that Lucas didn't think through" terms.
