I doubt anyone of those players could reach that far in guitar playing without "feel" or "emotion". These are all subjective views. Since some seem to want to put May at the bottom here i would like to say that few if any Guitarist other than May built their own Guitar,created a truely unique and instantly recognizable sound,then went on to form a world renowned band that has played to millions all over the world and sold millions of albums.

Satriani and Vai are great players there is no doubt about that,but May accomplished what music is all about,not notes @ the speed of light or complexity for complexity's sake.

Thats just not true. Joe gave Steve a handful of informal 'playground' lessons when Steve was 14. Thats it. After that Steve has surpassed Satch at every level. In fact it was the already successful Vai who was instrumental in getting Joe a recording contract in the 1st place.

@hulldanfan yes it;s true, as Joe said "he came at my house with a guitar with no strings and a set of strings" and Vai said the same thing adding that " I didn;t even knew how to put the strings on the guitar" and the rest with the contract and the studio is true, Vai liked what Joe was playing so he told him that he should go and record...the rest is history, the fact is that Joe taught him and Vai practiced and developed his own style, they are both great guitarist anyway....

I love Steve Vai's playing, and i've also been a huge fan of Brian May too for many years, so this was like a dream come true for me when it first came out! I've since learned though, that Vai doesn't think this is very good, he says so on the commentary of one of his DVDs. I think it's on the Astoria DVD. And the sound isn't very good on this clip, so that's why they all sound like a bunch of bees in a jar, I guess!

Sure May isn't the fire-breathing, technical virtuoso that Vai is. But May has one of the most distinctive tones in all of rock history, plus he played the solo to Bohemian Rhapsody (which has to be one of the most famous - and beautiful - solos ever).
