  • Thanks for posting this beautiful song

  • absolute classic

  • I learned this song, literally, on my father's knee when I was five years old and we sang it together at every family function. That grand ol' Irishman is long gone, but his whispers still come over the sea ... to me. Merry Christmas, Dad. I love and miss you always. Thank you for being such a dear and loving father.

  • If a person wants to know the rela words to this song try 'Foster and Allen- BallyJamesDuff'

because this fella can sing but he does NOT know the words

he has left out the entire 1st verse

and has 'guessed' the rest of it

  • Definitely gonna learn this song, cheers, slainte.

  • I helped carry my father to his resting place on this tune...had he been there he woud have loved it...Eccl 5:9

  • My pappa was called Paddy Reilly and this was my mums song. Brilliant!

    God Bless them both.

  • My mother, who immigrated to the USA in the 50's, was born in Ballyjamesduff. She went to Ramonen School. I recently sent her and her sister's cremains home to be buried in the family plot at Kildoragh Church. My cousin David is the caretaker and owns the family farms in Claudia.

I visited the relatives in Ireland and Ballyjamesduff for the first time in 1977.

I was thrilled to find this great song!!! My mother would have loved it!.

  • THat's some story, it must have taken a lot of arranging, this is a beautiful song, I love Paddy Reilly's music.

I am going to Ireland later,as my Grandfather was Irish !

  • "taken" a lot of arranging" to get their remains sent from the USA to Balleyjamesduff, Co Cavan????...hahaha..you've have NO IDEA!!! It took over 3 months to get this relatively simple project accomplished. I had no idea what I was in for when I came up against all the restrictions the US has on sending "human remains" via the US Postal Service. THEY DON'T ALLOW IT!! Only a funeral home may send it . Fortunately, come the day of the service, the sun shone brightly after days of bad weather!

  • It must have been fraught at times, but worth it though in the end !

    Well done !

  • check out same song, gerry black Iontas Theatre Castleblayney.

  • My Dad sang this at family gatherings, it brings back many happy memories of my childhood, thanks for posting.

the first verse is da most importent and he left it out

yea hes a great singer but hes killing percys song

  • A true CAVAN song!Love this song!!!

  • The Garden Of Eden Has Vanished They Say

But I Know The Lie Of It Still

Just Turn To The Left At The Bridge Of Finea And Stop When Half Way To Cootehill.

Cootehill is where my fams from.

This song was played at my Granddads funeral.

    Makes me sad.

  • Did'nt anyone notice he missed the first verse ??????

" The Garden Of Eden has vanished they say .. but i know the lie of it still.. Just turn to the left at the bridge of Finea and stop when half way to Cootehill "

Shame he missed this as he sings it very well !

  • isaw paddy in malaga on thurs gone on flight to dublin. brought back memories of my childhood of the summers i spent in ballyjamesduff. it was also my grans fav song as she came from there

  • Fact I just found out about it. My grandfaters mother, was the daughter of Paddy Reilly. Small world

  • You know, I am really unsure how to put this, but, if my mother is to be right, I am paddy reilly's great great (dont know how many times lol, am 18 if that helps), grand son. Anyone know how I can find out more about the song n stuff. I mean, he is my, grandad.....

  • The song was written by Percy French. Hence the name of the Hotel on main street Ballyjamesduff County Cavan. Yes legend has it Paddy Reilly went to Scotland.

  • thats weird, cause im a not too far off relation of paddy reilly. I still live in BJD. my mothers maiden name is reilly and me gran is still alive. she tells me i am a great great great grandson of paddy.

  • Interesting, I'll say to my mother, I never really did find a lot out about it, I just remember on a holiday once in an irish bar, my mum said that she was a relation.

  • This is a really lovely song, by one of the best singers I have ever heard. I love this song and all his others, what a voice he has. I have never heard him sing a song badly.

    Perfect.

What is it like in BJD, I live in Norfolk.

    Love Irish music.
