One thing I'll say about the speakers, they speak of "somewhere in our history, we've embraced anti-intellectual behavior"...brother said "I don't know where that happened". It's as if his memory is short or he's forgotten about the fact we've (blacks) have just undergone 400 years of intellectual "beat down"! The call it "slavery and discrimination". The fact is we haven't ever addressed the damage that was done to the minds of blacks. We've lost our minds, and can't find them!

This is a very interesting view but even more importantly, it relates to "raising the bar" and committing to "personal standards." The problem in my view is about a lack of influence in the home of a true Leader. Is this anti-intellectualism stronger among poor Blacks compared to the middle class and up? Don't you find a difference with whites on this involving class also? Many poor whites probably are no more pro-intellectual than poor Blacks. Maybe this issue is more common with Blacks because we have a higher poverty rate?

To the speakers, yes being intelligent is frowned upon because of the images that are in the popular media. Many brothers in Atlanta, I call them cookie-cutter brothers. We embrace ignorance and the thug mentality. Families and the entertainment industry really need to start providing more positive images to our youth.

It's up to parents to tell their children the value of education. It's up to parents to tell them that the entertainment industry doesn't reflect the values one needs. Pouring more taxpayer money into education has gone on for years with little or no positive results. Why do orientals do so well? THE FAMILY UNIT. Then empower kids to learn how to be entrepreneurs early on in life. Schools should teach the subject, after all these kids are either going to work for a company (profit or non profit) or create their own path by owning businesses.
